View Full Version : Another A4000 project!

Well I was lucky enough to get an A4000 Motherboard complete with Elbox Power Tower last week, it needs a little work (retr0bright) and I'll need to save for upgrades, maybe after xmas it can see its full potential.

CSMkIII maybe :ninja:

However for now, using spares from my boxes of bits I've built a fully working Amiga albeit in a basic setup, crying out for RTG and a faster CPU though.

A4000D Motherboard with 030 CPU, 8mb Motherboard Ram & 48mb on Z3Fastlane which is driving the SCSI CDROM. Have also installed my X-Surf which is hooked up to a wireless gaming adapter, and yep - this gets online through my WiFi Network!

The other CDRoms/FDD's are PC drives just to fill the gaps as I have no blanking plates ;) DF0 is via the External FDD (assume that's what the Jumper on the Mother sets!)

As always I've taken some pics, however don't expect to make any further progress on this for a while

As I say this is work in progress, I'll get the front off and try my hand a Retr0brighting at some point.

Steve.

But how do you find all this material? :D
I hard to find an A4000 for a cheap price. :-(

I found this one here on Amibay from Bebek! I guess I was just lucky!

Right place at the right time...

I'm also thinking once I get the case looking nice I might transfer the PicassoIV into the Tower and go Mediator Di in the desktop!

I'll need to really save my pennies!

My latest acquisition for this little project, a PicassoII.

Just wanted a basic RTG for this system without all the frills and I must say, very impressed

The pass through is simple but works a treat on my system. As you've come to expect there are some pics :D

Hey DonAmiga,

Thanks for the kind words

The JVC is just a HD LCD TV. I got from ebay for about 110 its great becuase it even takes the native 15khz Amiga Output!

The only snag is, for some reason Scart does not work from my Amiga's and consoles :(

Great for this kind of RTG setup thought with native passthrough.

Steve.

My A3640 arrived today from MarcB :D

The Card is immaculate, I took her for a quick test drive and she's running fine. I did have a couple of connection issues but I'm pretty sure thats becuase I don't have the little plastic standoffs, my set got lost in the post sending them out on loan.

Hopefully I can find another set soon and enjoy this great card! When I had it running there was a very decent speed boost.

As you've come to expect, pictures follow my little speech ;)

Now you need to hack a little (OK, don't need to be tiny!) fan over the heatsink for reliable operation of the accelerator.

Or swap the original CPU for a hen's teeth MC version.

Thanks mate

Juvvy posted the stand off's today so with any luck I'll have some more updates over the weekend, plus hopefully my 30pin Simms will be here by then, damn I forgot how long stuff takes to arrive from USA lol

A huge thanks to Mr JuvUK :bowdown::bowdown:

OMG, the package I've been waiting for over three weeks from USA finally arrived today!

Got stung for 20 squids taxes (grrr) but I'm soon getting over that because my dream has (almost) been realised!

So whats tonights upgrade you ask?

16x 16mb 30pin Simms for a total of 256mb of Z3 Fast Ram!!!

4 CPU Stand Off's from JuvUK so I can fit my A3640 properly (thanks Juvvy)

And the A3640 of course!

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm105/fitzsteve/IMG_0510.jpg

Now these Simms were a right bar steward to fit, so I just started with 4 and set the jumpers. Plugged in the card, switched on and prayed! Yippppeeeeeeeeeeee! 64mb Fast Ram :D

So we know it works with 16mb Simms! Great

In goes the rest...

Ok so the more observant of you have spotted there is 48mb awol somewhere, I think some of the simms might have not gone in fully becuase they were so damn tight to fit, so they're all comming out and will be refitted!

More on that and the A3640 later!!!

Thanks mate!

Its been one of my slower projects to put together, a little bit at a time but as you say it'll be nice to see what performance we get out of the 040@ 33mhz

I like that I've managed to keep this one pretty original as well, the drive and bay covers, etc. Even the PCI slot blankers are original to the Tower :)

Its not the prettiest case, I admit that but its damn sturdy. I bet it could be run over by a tank than the latter would come out worse!

Very, very nice Steve! :)

Looks to be in perfect condition and a very tidy installation.

All the more reason to me to get a wiggle on with your card :) Looks like I'll be travelling back home this weekend, and I can see what parcels are waiting there for me - if there's any justice in the world those IC sockets should be among them. If not, I'm going with plan B (order with Farnell), so we can finally find out if those new GALs fix the card's stability.

I'll be ordering from Farnell some time next week again anyway to top up my supply of capacitors :) Now that I've mentioned it, have you taken a peek at your CD32's motherboard? My offer still stands if you need it mate :) If so, I'll do a list of caps at some point for it and tack them on the order

Here's a shot I took when benchmarking one of the 33MHz clocked boards:

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_kRG1wB80tiI/TPBhLlXRmFI/AAAAAAAAAlU/wvv6OKiJDpM/s400/IMAG0111.jpg (http://lh4.ggpht.com/_kRG1wB80tiI/TPBhLlXRmFI/AAAAAAAAAlU/wvv6OKiJDpM/IMAG0111.jpg)

It has a noticeable edge over the 25MHz A3640. This may increase a tiny bit further with some Z3 Fast RAM and would be interesting to see! :)

fitzsteve
14th January 2011, 18:01
Hey d0pefish, thanks for the screen shot

@mjnurney the TV is a JVC LT-19D8WJ

Now this TV has some pro's and cons:

+

The VGA input is great, its like a Multisync Monitor in as much as it will sync to almost anything including the Amiga native 15khz output from a RGB-VGA adapter!

The picture in these modes is sharp and clear plus being a HD ready set with HDMI its pretty decent for your Playstation/XBox.

Being white it looks pretty awesome along side the miggy

-

Now... The biggest drawback is it does not like Amiga RGB-Scart, I have tried a few different scart leads and they all come out black and white, maybe this is a fault with my TV, I don't know it was used from ebay so I cannot be 100% sure. But I tried my FreeSat box and that was fine however I tested my Dreamcast and this was also Black and White.

Interlaced screen modes need a flicker fixer/de-interlacer.

Some modes (like Native amiga screens) have slightly visable vertical lines especially on a white background.

Sound it a bit naff, so I use PC speakers.

mjnurney
14th January 2011, 18:21
ahh many thanks :-)

Awsome news guys! I got my A3640 back yesterday from d0pefish, caps replaced, upgraded to Rev3.2 and Overclocked to 33mhz.

Dale has done an awesome job on this card, I really can't thank you enough mate

Here is something from the request thread:

All done! :D

I can haz pr0n tiem naw?

One of the offending chips:
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_kRG1wB80tiI/TTdsLkWj3AI/AAAAAAAAAtA/Mksep-0rtiA/s400/CIMG0016.JPG (http://lh5.ggpht.com/_kRG1wB80tiI/TTdsLkWj3AI/AAAAAAAAAtA/Mksep-0rtiA/CIMG0016.JPG)

Off it comes, and the pads get cleaned and fluxed ready for the socket.
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_kRG1wB80tiI/TTdsMLswL9I/AAAAAAAAAtE/YZ3fw3E_fDU/s400/CIMG0019.JPG (http://lh4.ggpht.com/_kRG1wB80tiI/TTdsMLswL9I/AAAAAAAAAtE/YZ3fw3E_fDU/CIMG0019.JPG)

Socket soldered into place: :D
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_kRG1wB80tiI/TTdsNEOT5MI/AAAAAAAAAtI/pZlrjkU9cvs/s400/CIMG0020.JPG (http://lh3.ggpht.com/_kRG1wB80tiI/TTdsNEOT5MI/AAAAAAAAAtI/pZlrjkU9cvs/CIMG0020.JPG)

Repeat three more times, and the shiny new chips that Hikey programmed for me can be inserted. :D As mentioned, I tested the card between replacing chips so that if there was a problem with the card booting, I would know that the last piece of work would be the most likely cause. There were no problems at all
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_kRG1wB80tiI/TTdsNTeQQDI/AAAAAAAAAtM/qIEMJ3WW-0s/s400/CIMG0022.JPG (http://lh5.ggpht.com/_kRG1wB80tiI/TTdsNTeQQDI/AAAAAAAAAtM/qIEMJ3WW-0s/CIMG0022.JPG)

The card, as modeled by Taj's motherboard  (it's on my worktop being given some love in the other thread).
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_kRG1wB80tiI/TTdsN2oBfnI/AAAAAAAAAtQ/2nr3Q03tGD0/s400/CIMG0021.JPG (http://lh4.ggpht.com/_kRG1wB80tiI/TTdsN2oBfnI/AAAAAAAAAtQ/2nr3Q03tGD0/CIMG0021.JPG)

So, like before, I'll do some tests with various CPU-intensive software, and see if I can get any more freezing. I'm convinced it's solved now though, as my machine has now been running for quite some time with your card in place. Before, it would hard-lock within minutes without cold air being blown on it, and not even a power-cycle could bring it back without letting it cool down.

Now, all seems great! :thumbsup2::drinkin:

If all goes well, she could well be back home with you early next week, Steve!

I think I have a few little fans that could be placed on the 040, but they'll have the PC motherboard-style 3-pin header plugs on them. But I think I've also got some Molex HDD-style power plugs that I could solder onto it instead if there's one free in your A4000. I'll have a rummage tomorrow.

Cheers! :D

Here's a final pic after the work was finished finished:

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_kRG1wB80tiI/TT4NKz7HaII/AAAAAAAAAu0/PUAmzHWrntE/s400/CIMG0122.JPG

As I say, its all back with me now and installed in the A4000, its working great and even the Z3 Fastlane is quite happy to run with 192mb at the moment :D

I've installed Warp3D and got the gears Demo working, albiet very slow lol. No luck getting GL Quake to run yet, but I will try again.

I'm getting just shy of 25Mips from this badboy so I'm very, very pleased.

This project then is pretty much finished

I got shot of half of the 16mb Simms now however it was still unstable with 192mb (random crashing) so I wouldn't have expected any improvment, I don't think I was destined to have a 256mb Z3 fastlane! Good news is that 128mb is working flawlessly, even with 64mb assigned to ShapeShifter

Hey guys - little update to this project of mine :)

Using my NinJah Skills :ninja: I was able to get an Apollo 4060, it arrived today in just 4 days from Canada - of course this was by UPS not Royal Snail lol...

So here she is - isn't she boot-a-ful?

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm105/fitzsteve/Apollo4060.jpg

She came with 48mb Ram which I have upgraded to 96mb, annoyingly I do have 4 matching 32mb Simms but it looks like one of them is faulty which is a shame. (Yeah the build became a fault finding mission there for a while lol)

So here she is installed, as you can see I'd removed the FDD/HDD cage for access to the Simms when I was doing all the switcheroo's

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm105/fitzsteve/IMG_1103.jpg

Must say I'm really impressed with the Apollo 4060, it seems faster than the Blizzy 060's @50mhz I've used, she's sitting behind me running Quake now pretty smooth indeed for a basic 060

As you may know these Apollo's are also pretty clockable, so with my variety of x-tals here and a nice H/S Fan I might have a play over the weekend.

Zorro Cards all back in, the 128mb on the Z3 Fastlane working well with the Apollo for a total of 248mb thanks to a 16mb Simm I crammed in the last slot on the Apollo! :D

XC 060 was getting pretty hot even at 50mhz so I've fitted a HeatSink/Fan which has kept it cool even after an hour of Quake. I did try setting the Ram clock to 040 and tried some other x-tals (60/64/66mhz) but no boot so I think I need one of the latest mask 060's. :(

Anyway, here's the pics

Ok! Progress :)

Slow - but moving along....

So, my Mediator arrived today yay!

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm105/fitzsteve/IMG_1131.jpg

Time to install! Luckily I have already the right connectors in the Tower so no need to mess around with new PSU's etc. Straight away though it doesn't quite fit, it sticks out more than the old Zorro board so this means the brass stand offs are too short and the PCI slots are in the wrong place, however moving on... Wont let that stop me from testing her out!

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm105/fitzsteve/IMG_1136.jpg

Here she is, installed the best I can.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm105/fitzsteve/IMG_1137.jpg

Don't worry, there are lots more Zorro & PCI cards to go in, this is just what I needed for testing. Voodoo 5 5500 PCI, CV64/3D+SD and the Mediator Riser Board.

Well as I type Doom is running behind me on the Voodoo and I have a nice 24bit Workbench so we have some success :D

However not without its issues which I've come to expect anyway! I am having to run the Mediator in 256mb Zorro window as it yellow screens with the X-Surf in place (yeah sorry added that later) and also crashes with RamLib error if you have the Voodoo Monitor Driver in place (in 512mb Mode) Now this is supposed to be required for a Voodoo 5 5500 but I've tricked it into thinking its a Voodoo 3 and seems to work, lets see later if I can Warp3D going (wish me luck)

Also at this stage as warned by Kinny it does seem to be CV64/3D or Voodoo and not both as the CV64/3D isn't being picked up at all with the Voodoo Driver loading, but I can always try the Picasso 96 driver for the CV64/3D as now I'm running CGX4 and P96 at the same time - yeah confusing

Scan Doubler is working though so not all bad...

More to come when I figure things out - kind of working in the dark here with no Manual and just my old Mediator CD from the A1200 :ninja:

Hope you enjoyed the pr0n

Steve.

If you're running a DCE FF/SD between the Mobo & the Mediaor board, be sure you have some fan or other blowing between the Mobo & the back of the Mediator. If you don't, you might fry the RAMDAC on the DCE FF/SD.

See JuvUK's recent wanted Ad here: http://www.amibay.com/showthread.php?t=15039

Also, according to the Elbox reference Manual, if you are running a Voodoo 5500 with 64Mb Ram, the Mediator Board should have it's jumper set to 512MB. Your 256Mb Set Jumper might be FuX0ring the whole shebang, but then anything over 64Mb on a Z3 is pretty Impressive. You have to remember that Elbox had to Fudge DMA to get their boards to work & Z3 is fully DMA compliant, whereas Eblox PCI boards are not. ;)

....because you are on the fringe of DMA being right or NOT & putting Elbox into the equation just totally F'ks up DMA. Without DMA being right, the Z3 is left flapping in the wind....

DMA Laws get totally Kunt0rd with Elbox. - Ask rkauer.

For a TRUE DMA Experience, you need a G-REX4000D for everything to work correctly. No other PCI board does. ;)

Yeah m8! - It's sad, but with Elbox in ur Miggy, DMA is a complete Fudge & via their Driiver's.

It's sad but a fact of Elbox's Legacy & they should be shunned for it, so go for a G-REX 4000D with either a CSMKIII or if you really want to splash out, a CSPPC.

CSMKIII all the way for me, not including OS4.1 Classic as things stand atm, but then that's something none of us know Jack about to be sure. ;)

Either way Bud, it's Horses for Courses & you have to pick one or the other. When it come's to DMA, ....support it in every manner you can.

If it goes into the realm of Elbox & some Kludged drivers, ....tell Elbox to fro. ;)

I have a LT4 on my (badly joined together) A1200T. Currently with a Radeon 9250 128Mb. It is working and giving a lovely 96Mb extra RAM.

But on the "best" ElB***cks way, WHDLoad will not work with this memory added to the system, if some WB program/resident uses it. WHDLoad then simply will freeze the machine.

I'm thinking in add 127Mb video RAM to video RAM and so nothing will be added to system, as I have 128Mb on the A1200's accelerator (Blizz1260), so I think I don't need to worry about lack of memory, right?;)

Nobody get a solution yet.

But I have my other Amigas to use WHDLoad with, so no biggie.

Iirc, Video Ram on your PCI Graphics when used as Fast Ram in your Amiga is a bit of a kludge. It might be as good as 16Bit Ram, which is slower than the 24Bit RAM on the Fastlane. Chip Ram (Graphics Ram) is also 24Bit but slower than 24Bit Fast Ram on the Fastlane. Lot's of cun-fusions all round but reading back to your recent Mediator post, why not remove the X-Surf & fit a PCI NIC in place instead. This might allow you to run the Elbox board with a 512Mb window as is intended for Voodoo 5500 use.

Just a thought. ;)

Cheers,

I'll try again at the weekend, I'll have to pull both the CV64/3D and the X-Surf for 512mb Mode because with the CV64/3D in place I get a RamLib error on loading workbench

Plenty of fun and games for the bank holiday weekend :D

Hi Steve,

As Kin said, no DMA boards can be run with Mediators, only the onboard SCSI DMA present in CPU boards like CS MK-II SCSI Kit, CS MK-III or CS-PPC.

Some users report the DENEB is working in DMA Mode (Z3 slot) but I test this option on three A4K's and.... works, but very unstable, system crashes many times.. So, my DENEB's are working in Z3/PIO mode.

Best wishes

I've had no problems running Deneb in DMA mode with the Mediator 4000Di. I did have to change the 'alternative config' jumper on the mediator though (can't remember if I had to set the jumper or remove it)

Hi my friend. :)

What hardware have you installed (CPU, Z3, PCI)? Can you check the jumper config?

My everyday use A4KD have Mediator 4000D and:

Buster 11, KS 3.9
CSPPC 128MB
V-Lab Motion
Toccata
Voodoo3 3000
Radeon 9200
DENEB
ZoRAM 256MB
All HDD's & DVD's are UW-SCSI

When I config DENEB in DMA mode, system boots & run but, as I said, is unstable and crashes many times.... in PIO mode runs for days without switch off.....

If you know a solution to work with DENEB in DMA mode..... please... share your info......:bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:

I have Master jumper closed, Winsize jumper closed, swap config jumper closed.

Cyberstorm MK3
Radeon 9200
Deneb
10/100 Ethernet

The only thing I did to get DMA working on the Deneb was close the swap config jumper, before this the Amiga would freeze with Deneb in DMA mode.

It seems it is because of your Zorram you're having problems. See this reply from Michael Bohmer on Amiga.org:

Buster 11, DENEB and DMA will lead to lockups in hardware if ZorRAM is being used heavily.
This is a "feature" of Buster 11, a remnant of the famous Buster 9 lockup which was claimed to be removed while stepping to rev11. It is still there, harder to trigger, but it will hit you just as a matter of time and statistics.
But: I have written a new firmware for DENEB which can cope with that situation. The DENEB FPGA takes over some buster work, and allows (according to all our tests in lab and at customers) stable operation of DENEB DMA and Zorro III RAM.
Firmware is available on request for testing, and will be published as free upgrade for all DENEB customers as time permits (i.e. I need to find some time to recompile the FPGA sources in a cleaned up version :-) )

Michael

So, you need to contact Michael for the updated firmware to try.

Hi! Thanks for the kind words.

This was hooked up through the VGA input via a PicassoII but this TV will also take the Amiga native input with an RGB-VGA converter (but dos not flicker fix)

Its a JVC LT-19DK8WJ beware though I've has issues getting my old games consoles and Amiga's to work via Scart, I have to use the VGA or S-Video ele they're in black and white

Other then that, its a great set - oh and HD so great for PS3/X-Box

Just a little update here, after the drama with PCI I went back to pure Zorro on this system.

I just installed a Deneb which arrived today - great bit of kit, really fast compared to the Subway USB and Thylacine USB that I've used.

Really responsive, as soon as you plug a device its up and running, no waiting, no system slowdown. Awesome

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm105/fitzsteve/IMG_1564.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm105/fitzsteve/IMG_1565.jpg

A little annoyance is that I had to pull the Z3 fastlane, the manual says that it cannot run together with the Deneb on a Buster 11 setup which sucks, and as expected no boot when I tried it :ninja:

So I'm now missing my extra 128mb of Ram, I guess since I was not using the SCSI I could look at a ZorRam, but 128mb on the Apollo 4060 is enough I guess

Oh and also tried to install my FastATA 4000 but after installing the drivers the system gets in a reset loop so I had to pull that too lol

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm105/fitzsteve/IMG_1566.jpg

Ya gotta love these systems, I wonder if its possible to find 7 Zorro cards that all work together so I can fill this system up? 3x 256mb ZorRam's in the empty slots maybe? :D

---------- Post added at 13:45 ---------- Previous post was at 12:37 ----------

Well as a workaround I put the Deneb in PIO mode and its working with the Z3 Fastlane :)

Of course its using the CPU now and not FPGA so its not going to be as fast, but still seens just as quick to me...

I'm thinking or having a switcharound between the other A4000 though to find the best combination of hardware - should keep me busy for a while lol...

Anyway Moar Pics! Of course with the extra hardware installed:

Hi All!

Just a minor update here :)

Some modified USB adapters I bought arrived today so I finally setup my USB card reader as I want it.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm105/fitzsteve/IMG_1734.jpg

I had this little USB Hub in my PeeCee box but apears to only be USB 1.1 so will need to swap it out but it'll let me setup things and test everything out.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm105/fitzsteve/IMG_1737.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm105/fitzsteve/IMG_1738.jpg

And the Card Reader installed at the front bay:

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm105/fitzsteve/IMG_1741.jpg

So lets get some bits connected!

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm105/fitzsteve/IMG_1743.jpg

Yay! \o/ It works :D

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm105/fitzsteve/IMG_1744.jpg

As I say its only USB 1.1 Hub so will need to swap it out with something to get the full speeds... (currently 1mb/sec)

For example with my ICY Box I'm pulling 5.7mb/Sec
