Flying blind on this one, but can anyone either recommend or sell me a hard drive solution for the CDTV ?

You can't attach a HD just like that without a SCSI interface for the CDTV unit. If you have one then it's ok. :)

I realise that, which is why am seeking advice on the best way to get a solution or buy an existing one.....

I believe that he could answer all your questions if such an item is suitable for your CDTV. :)

Yes, the only one on sale recently was the (CF)IDE68k. It plugs into the CPU and adds A600 style IDE. I think they are sold out though.

The only other was Amitrix who had some old ones in their loft which required assembly

I bought one from here (cant find thread now), towards end of last year.
SCSI-TV, works great.
