Hey guys. They are now here!

I'm going to pick up some jiffy's over the week but I'm in Uni tomorrow and Wednesday, I also have a lot of coursework due, so will need to ask everyone to be patient a little longer. I wasn't expecting them to turn up so soon! I'm a little overrun with deadlines etc. I will be able to start sending these out before the weekend is here however

Between then and now I'd like to collect postages so will start collecting postages from now onward. I'll need to make a spreadsheet up to track the people that have paid though.

For those in the UK, postage will be 1.90 for standard first class postage. This includes posting with insurance up to 46, plus the cost of a padded envelope. (extra insurance can be added at cost but I will need to check on prices individually based on the total value of your items if you want it).

I have asked non-UK buyers to PM me to arrange their shipping seperately as the cost will vary based on location and will likely require more packaging and thus the item will need weighing before I can get a proper quote.

If anyone no longer has my paypal address, please PM me for it again. Once I have the payments and the Jiffy's are here, I'll start sending them out

Also, once you have paid the postage, please PM me with your Amibay name, real name, what you ordered and if you could add your address again in the PM with these details that would be great. I do have everyones addresses but not matched to your Amibay names. There's a lot of orders here, and I'd like to be sure everyone is getting what they ordered before I start posting!

PS. I have thanked Krikzz on our behalf for the speedy service and his time and patience with out order.

THANKS GUYS!

SNES!? lol

I think we need 10 of each type to make it worthwhile... We can do SNES ones too but we may need atleast 9 other interested...

@ Red Impact - Did you want an MD one as well or is it just the SNES one you're after?

Zetr0

there nothing wrong with adding more to your order as this will reduce postage fees.

I would also suggest splitting up those that are interested into other groups, like EverDriveMD / EverDrive SNES / EverDrive SNES DSP1 / EverDrive 64 and so on...

the larger the order the more retrogate has to work with =)

if it wasn't for the wont of pocket money, I would probably plumb for an EverDrive SNES and the EverDrive 64.... sigh..... lotto this week needs to come in...... I suppose I should meet it half way and buy a ticket! lol

The EverDrive MD: A Quick Overview

http://s3.postimage.org/kww0zn4l4/Image1.jpg (http://www.postimage.org/)

We started off with a 2GB card formated for FAT, and placed files from the ROM collections of MegaDrive / Master System and 32x in their seperate folders.

MegaDrive & Master System Games

We started off with just the MegaDrive and MegaCD hook up and were very pleased with the simplicity of use in selecting the file to program to the flash RAM and then auto running the game...

We tried Micheal Jacksons moon walker - which as r0jaws pointed out is Karate Champ in better dress clothes.... about the hardest thing in this game is trying not to make wise cracks as Jacko saves these crying children... kneeling in front of him....

We also tried Megalomainia, much to r0jaws delight its a very tidy game, and one of my favourites.

We then moved over to the Master System, starting off with a VERY impressive Alien 3!!! and then experiencing controler failure with Alien Syndrome. from this awesome we powered off and started up for the main event...

32x Games

Plugging in the 32x Expansion and re-installing the EverDrive MD card we fired it all back up... and we throw at it (loaded) Mortal Kombat 2, a very impressive title, although r0jaws was cut to smithers by Baraka... on the first level... - it wasn't pretty lol.

so Onward we moved to Virtual Racing, and what a delight that is... while it looks a little rought around the poly's theres something very charming about it... But we didn't stop there we loading in some Virtua Fighter and Sol Deace!!

Lots of fun... but we wanted more... but first I wanted to know if Master System games would work with the 32x plugged in... unfortunately it doesn't - oh well.. its not a deal breaker!

SD and SDHC (>2GB?)

So we wanted to get more than just a 2GB card running, we wanted atleast 4GB as this would provide an near unexhaustive game library in one cart...

Since I had a floating 4GB SDHC, I prepared it for FAT32, unfortuinately the EverDrive couldn't see the card.... not a worry I then hit up the CMD and formatted the card for FAT 16 using 64k clusters.

Alas that didn't work as well.... so with a little google I found an update for our EverDrive MD's - you can click here to download the file (http://krikzz.com/pub/support/index.php?dir=everdrive-md/os-bin/)

All you need to do is copy the BIN file to a 2GB or less SD card which has been formated for FAT16 - plumb this into your EverDrive MD and then select (tool-box >> OS Update) you then select the file you have just downloaded to update.

Since I am dishing out links - here is a PDF of the EverDrive MD manual (http://krikzz.com/pub/support/everdrive-md/manual/EverDrive-MD_english.pdf), please note this is for a slightly older version, as such the new ones here are updated by SD card (not an Altera JTAG blaster)

How long does it take to enable SDHC FAT32 support?

Within the space of 5 minutes we had updated the OS on the EverDrive for FAT32 support, and the 4GB card worked straight away!

If I had a larger one Handy I would of tested it - alas I dont... although I am sure I have a 16GB somewhere LOL

Anyway... so were were most pleased with 32x Starwars neatly followed up with some Mega-Lo-Mania!

So where does the fun end?

However there is only one small problem, (other than finding the time to play all these awesome games) and that is the region problem, now the EverDrive is quite a clever bit of kit, however on most of the USA/JP only region games upon running them the classic - this game was not made for your system - bla bla bla...

So you will need to look at modifying your console(s) for proper region free-ing

I would suggest to anyone at this point to review www.mmmonkey.co.uk (http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/), particularly the Sega MD / MCD and 32X, there very easy to follow guides and prove most awesome indeed - especially the switchless mods (based on a PIC)

All in all I would give it a 9/10 Super-Stars!

http://www.ratemyplacement.co.uk/new-design/images/stars/stars-9_0.png

It does exactly what it says on the tin, it provides a mass game library in one simple cartridge, reducing the space needed to have everything in the front room! not only that but also playing master system games without another machine or yet another kludge is a real sweetener!

Upgrading your EverDrive MD

Now, for those of you that might be a little worried about upgrading their EverDrive MD - I am happy to do this for you, just let me know when we get to sorting out postages over the comming days.

The Super EverDrive: A Quick Overview

http://s1.postimage.org/6oe6h8vok/P1030393.jpg (http://www.postimage.org/)

Like the Everdrive MD we started off with a 2GB card formated for FAT, and placed files from the ROM collections of the Super Nintendo ES on the card.

The unit worked straight away Super Mario World!

DSP enabled Games

As you may know DSP enabled titles require a DSP to work, now there are not many of these titles that use a DSP - so before I throw up a list, here is what the DSP is all about-

The DSP is a family series of fixed-point digital signal processor chips, which allowed for fast vector-based calculations, bitmap conversions, both 2D and 3D coordinate transformations, and other functions.

Interestingly four revisions of the chip exist, while each are physically identical they do have different microcode.

The DSP-1
This is the most varied and widely used of the SNES DSPs, appearing in 15 separate titles. It is used as a math coprocessor in games such as Super Mario Kart and Pilotwings that require more advanced Mode 7 scaling and rotation. It also provides fast support for the floating point and trigonometric calculations needed by 3D math algorithms. The later DSP-1A and DSP-1B serve the same purpose as the DSP-1, however, several bugs were corrected in these later chips.

The DSP-2
This can only be found in the SNES port of Dungeon Master. Its primary purpose is to convert Atari ST bitmap image data into the SNES bitplane format. It also provides dynamic scaling capability and transparency effects.

The DSP-3
Assistant chip used in only one game for the Japanese Super Famicom, a turn-based strategy game titled SD Gundam GX. The chip assisted with tasks like calculating the next AI move, Shannon-Fano bitstream decompression, and bitplane conversion of graphics.

The DSP-4
A DSP used in only one game cartridge, Top Gear 3000. It primarily helped out with drawing the race track, especially during the times that the track branched into multiple paths.

So now you know =)

Now here is a list of DSP-1 enabled titles - if you have a DSP-1 enabled EverDrive you will be able to play you ROM backups on this card -

(click here for a list of games) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Super_NES_enhancement_chips)

Play Time
heres a shot of Sonic the Hedge Hog on the Nintendo SNES

http://s1.postimage.org/34jk6v79g/P1030400.jpg (http://postimage.org/image/34jk6v79g/)

Interestingly this is a hacked "speedy gonzalas'" with a Sonic Sprite and he has been given the power to kick too... (for more info read up here) (http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_%28SNES%29)

And the most awesome Super EverDrive

http://s1.postimage.org/34jf895s4/P1030398.jpg (http://postimage.org/image/34jf895s4/)

Please note the way round the card is orientated - otherwise you could damge you equipment and the everdrive!

Upgrading the OS on your Super EverDrive
Now, like the EverDrive MD initiall the OS is FAT 16, however when an update is available to allow for FAT32 and thus taking full advantage of 4GB+ SDHC cards - you can download this from here (http://krikzz.com/pub/support/index.php?dir=super-everdrive/os-bin/)

Unfornately I would normally offer my help in upgrading these before shipping, however 1. The new OS is in the process of being written and that 2. I don't have a SNES available for the task =(

Upgrading you Super EverDrive to a DSP everdrive
It is entirely possible to upgrade your SuperEverDrive to DSP-1 EverDrive, you will need a DSP-1 chip, which you can scavenge from a DSP-1 SNES game and a 74HCU04N (CMOS Si -Gate Hex invertor) - quite cheap and easy to get hold of... as well as a couple of sundry discrete components.
You can Upgrade you

Games Region
We loaded up an NTSC region ROM of Street fighter on the Super EverDrive and surprisingly after telling us it was not for the SNES we are playing on - it allowed r0jaws to continue to play on - Choosing Blanka he began to take on Guile.... Unfortunately for r0jaws Guile decided to pummel Blanka into the next centuary.... it wasn't pretty.... I am noticing a patern with r0jaws and fighting games ;)

Anyway after the epic battle (of fail) the game then decided to sit on the This is not the right region screen - and wouldn't let r0jaws play any more - obviously disgusted with his button bashing is my theory ;)

So where does the fun end?
However there is only one small problem, (other than finding the time to play all these awesome games) and that is the region problem, So you will need to look at modifying your console(s) for proper region free-ing

I would suggest to anyone at this point to review www.mmmonkey.co.uk (http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/), particularly the SNES console ;D - they are very easy to follow guides and prove most awesome indeed - especially the switchless mods (based on a PIC)

So whats the score?

All in all I would give the Super EverDrive a 8/10 Super-Stars!

http://s1.postimage.org/ryir1ee5t/8out10.jpg (http://www.postimage.org/)

It does exactly what it says on the tin, it provides a mass game library in one simple cartridge, reducing the space needed to have everything in the front room! it also gives you the opportunity like we did and play ROM's that were never released. This would get 9 superstars the moment there is an SDHC software update

All in all I would give the DSP-1 EverDrive a 9/10 Super-Stars!

http://s1.postimage.org/ryisoxqnl/9out10.jpg (http://www.postimage.org/)

Again it does all that the Super EverDrive does, however it also plays those extra 15 titles or more - so thats a great little bonus, considering that some of these titles are quite high-profile releases like Mario Cart and Super Metroid
All in all having tried out one of these monsters it has left me wanting one as well LOL.... oh well - next group buy then....

Yes Please, one of each of the MD & SNES versions.

Can some one explain the differences in the types of SNES versions available?

AmiNeo
16th March 2012, 01:50
As far as I'm aware theres only 1 SNES version available. But I've not looked deep into it.

The site only lists 1 however.

---------- Post added at 00:47 ---------- Previous post was at 00:39 ----------

Just had confirmation from our seller that hes up for doing us the discount on bulk orders again! So we need to get each type up to 10 orders if possible for the discount. Otherwise whichever doesnt reach 10 will be the price listed on front page + postage

---------- Post added at 00:50 ---------- Previous post was at 00:47 ----------

yes thanks amineo, will this be costly?

Not as costly as if you bought them by yourself ;)

RED IMPACT
16th March 2012, 02:21
Just a SNES one please AmiNeo I have all I need for for my MD!

The difference between the regular and DSP1 model SNES ever drives is that a regular one can't play (if I remember correctly) about 8 specific games due to the original carts having a DSP1 chip in them - Mario Kart is one such game that does and therefore wouldn't be playable on a standard SNES everdrive.

They can be retro fitted however you need a donor DSP1 chip!

AmiNeo
16th March 2012, 02:27
http://shop.retrogate.com/Super-Everdrive-SED.htm

The cart options list additional options for DSP1 support but the only option on the pull down box is no  So whether he can do these at extra cost, I am unsure but I can ask if necessary. Please be aware that this will likely add to the cost though, but if we can get the discount It may not add as much as you would think overall :)

Alternatively you can have someone solder one on at a later date, or do it yourself if you have the skills.

If anyone has any more questions or needs anything else, just holler and I will see what I can do

I've contacted him and asked what the savings would be round abouts. They will depend on how many were buying exactly, so even he wouldn't be able to say for sure until we have our final numbers totalled.

Hopefully Zetr0, guardian of the group buy will be along to give us a rough estimate on the discount based on last years buy

Ofcourse you're more than free to just order your own, but the more people pitch in on this the bigger discount we all get.

Assuming we can hit target of atleast 10 of each, we have an estimate of

N64 (ED64V2) - 51.00 or 61.40 EUR

Looks good to me.

I guess it should be confirmed what revisions we would receive and (going by other threads) confirmation that both MD and SNES versions are able to play games from any region?

I would prefer the SNES DPS1 version if possible.

AmiNeo
16th March 2012, 11:56
Hey Peter. Unfortunately he doesnt seem to be doing the DPS1 versions at the moment but the option is there on the site, so it looks as though the board support it but simply wont come with a chip on it. I don't know whether this is because hes out of chips or if hes just stopped doing them but I can enquire if you'd like.

From what I know though, it isnt too difficult to acquire the chips and stick them on yourself. I'm considering getting a SNES one myself and doing that but the funds will need working out as I dont even have a SNES at the moment

Do you have any idea of when can we expect to get the units delivered? How long will you run this thread for?

AmiNeo

No plans on how long this will run for right now. Once we hit 20, I'll think about getting a deadline for a lock in and we'll sort payment out then. We may yet get another 10 or more in before we even decide at this rate (were up to 15 now, from 4 yesterday ) and remember, more people = smaller the cost

Well, I would like to hold up and see if the OS v3 makes it possible for a V2.3 board to patch ROMs without the need of a megakey. If that works, I don't need a new Everdrive.

Looks good to me.

I guess it should be confirmed what revisions we would receive and (going by other threads) confirmation that both MD and SNES versions are able to play games from any region?

I would prefer the SNES DPS1 version if possible.

The SNES DSP1 version is usually considerably more expensive. However, buying the standard snes everdrive does enable you to upgrade it to a dsp1 version if you strip the chip from a donor cartridge. I'm planning on doing this at some point in the future with mine. I already have a donor cart.

I'd be intersted in the N64 versions, whats + CIC?

Bad_Ad84
16th March 2012, 21:42
CIC is the security chip that's in all n64 carts. If you buy one without, you will need a donor cart to steal one from.

Not a bad idea if you are using a donor for the case anyway.

Okay guys were over 20 anyways :D

We need some more SNES interest and a few more N64 wouldnt hurt either. We have enough MDs but more wont hurt.

I'll start thinking about getting a final date for expressing interest. Once this date is up I will contact our supplier and tell him how many we'll be needing of each so please, make sure you definitely want what you've asked for and have the cash ready before the final date for expressing interest. If people start dropping out when I ask for payments it may screw the order up because I will have to tell our friend who is making these for us how many we need in advance to make sure there are no delays.

Once that date has arrived I'll start taking payments and there will be a final date for payments to be in.

Okay guys, I've added the dates when things need to be done by...

Our supplier is preparing for our order now as he told me he will need 1 - 2 weeks to get them ready. Based on this I have set a time for registering interest and payments....

FINAL DATE FOR REGISTERING INTEREST AND RESERVING ONE IS 22/3/12

ALL PAYMENTS TO BE RECEIVED BY 29/3/12

PAYMENTS WILL BE TAKEN ONCE THE INTEREST DEADLINE IS UP.

Does anyone know anywhere that would sell the SNES DSP-1 chips pre-pulled?

If I could find enough I may be willing to offer a service of installing them to those wanting it on. If I go for one I will be doing one for my own so a few more wont hurt. I can solder them on no probs, not sure I have the equipment to remove them however.

r0jaws
19th March 2012, 00:56
I did look a while ago, but only found donor carts available. Wikipedia lists carts available with DSP1 chips. I bought one of those.
It doubled as a donor case, and chip. :)

AmiNeo
19th March 2012, 01:01
Yup was thinking the same. Just was curious as to whether anyone actually had the chips themselves. Seems unusual that nobody has them when Everdrives themselves are insanely popular in the homebrew and retro scene.

Whats the best way to get the chip off a donor cart with no hot air station?

r0jaws
19th March 2012, 01:18
With no hot air? It would be using a solder sucker and braid, and it will take a while.
I maybe able to help out there, depending on how much time I have on my hands and how many people want chips.

AmiNeo
19th March 2012, 02:00
Hmm, yeah I see theyre through holes :)

Seems like an awful lot of effort considering the only 2 desirable english games that need it are PilotWings and Mario Kart. Might just be cheaper to buy those 2 carts as well and not butcher retro hardware to be honest.

r0jaws
19th March 2012, 08:09
There is that, but like I said, I bought the cartridge because I wanted the case primarily. I could have hung around waiting for a dead cart to materialize, but that was impractical. So I bought one that also contained the upgrade I wanted.

I'll change mine to one with a CIC if that helps? I've got loads of donor cartridges with CIC chips which gave up their shells for the last batch of ED64's.

AmiNeo

Hey alex, sure, I'll amend that now. All the N64s wil then be +CIC so will be a bit easier come order time.

*Nods...

I'd be happy using my Everdrive without the upgrade to be honest. 90% of the SNES library will run fine anyway.

Anything else, carts should be cheap enough for anyways. There are only the SuperFX games and perhaps 3 others that I know of that wont run on a standard SNES Everdrive that are PAL.

Think I'll pencil myself in for a Super aswell :D

It also appears to be different in...

128mbit (16mbyte) SDRAM

80mbit (10mbyte) max ROM size

Standard SD and micro SD card slots

Instant loading (1-2 sec)

Hardware MEGAKEY.

CD BIOS loading.

CD RAM cart feature.

Cheats feature. Game Genie and Play-Action Replay format supported.

Built in audio playback. Currently WAV only is supported, but some other formats may be supported in future.

If I'm not mistaken, I think this one should be able to run MegaCD CD images off the SD card... WITHOUT THE MEGACD

EDIT: After speaking to our guy, apparently I'm mistaken. lol. The new MD everdrives still need a MegaCD for MCD games.

I'd like to put my name down for an Everdrive 64 but I need mine to be with a 6102 CIC chip as I have an NTSC N64. I presume the people who have already put their names down on the list are requiring a 7101 CIC chip for a PAL N64? I guess you'll need to make this clear when you finally place the orders.

Also, if possible, I'd like the optional USB connector added on to my Everdrive as it will come in useful for N64 development work. Will this be possible without disrupting the group order? It's $15 extra for the USB connector which I'd be happy to pay.

So to summarise, I'd like an Everdrive 64 + 6102 CIC + optional USB connector.

I presume these are are v2 Everdrives that are being ordered?

Thanks

NTSC PAL
6101 7102
6102 7101
6103 7103
6105 7105
6106 7106
(it's correct that last digit of first two PAL CIC's is swapped compared to NTSC CIC's!)

PAL compatible Everdrive 64 will come with a 7101 CIC and NTSC compatible Everdrive 64 will come with a 6102 CIC.

As far as I understand it, NTSC N64 card will only boot with an NTSC CIC chip and PAL N64 will only boot with PAL CIC chip. You can desolder the PAL CIC chip and solder in an NTSC CIC chip to use it in an NTSC system and vice versa.

If you can get me an Everdrive with USB connector that'd be great. Let me know how much and I'll sort out the payment.

Quick question.
How long do you think it will take them to arrive?

AmiNeo
22nd March 2012, 20:53
Given he needs a week to 2 weeks to get the order ready and then ship it, I'm guessing well have them here around second week in April. It's a large order and he may need to make a lot of them for us depending on his stock levels.

Let me just get those final orders onto the spreadsheet...

Everyone has until midnight tonight (UK Time) to finalise their orders

Sorry - just to re-cap...

We are all getting MD version with Megakey yes?

There was no option to get a DSP SNES version?

AmiNeo
22nd March 2012, 23:44
Megakey is standard on all new MD everdrives.

DSP was not an option, the DSP version was apparently a limited edition, but the boards do have the socket for adding one of your own.

So yeah you're right :)

Everyone in, be ready to pay over the next week, earlier the better though. Sooner everyone is in, sooner the order goes through and we get these things

SirClive, if you could PM me ASAP we'll get your order finalised and then I can tell Krikzz how many of each we need.

AmiNeo
23rd March 2012, 06:33
Everyone should now have PMs regarding payment.

Please make sure you check the amounts and items lsted in the PMs before you pay.

Dont hesitate to get in touch with any slip ups you may spot if any. I've done my best to check there are no errors but recording and confirming orders for 55 items isnt all that easy at 4:20 AM

SirClive has PM asking him to confirm his order, and I will speak to him and arrange payment seperately.

The only ones that wont have a PM should be the guys that have already paid. (Those listed on the bottom of the first post).

Deadline for payments is 29/3/12 but I can put the order in and pay earlier if I have everyone's payments before hand.

Once everyone is happy with their orders I will inform Krikzz of the final tally for each type.

Thanks once again to you all for being a part of this. I really can't thank you enough for joining in and getting us all such awesome prices!

Please make sure you include the fees or gift payments or I will not receive your full payment this side.

Edit - PayPal have always refunded fees for me previously, even the correct percentage when offering a partial refund. Could this be anything to do with the currency?

AmiNeo
23rd March 2012, 18:49
Possibly, I dont know if Beaps started off with a different currency before paying in dollars, all I know is that it came in dollars, and a fee was removed, then the refund action was only allowing a refund minus the fees.

I havent refunded it since we'd both lose out in the process. But please be mindful of this when paying ppl.

AmiNeo
24th March 2012, 16:53
As I stated in a earlier post. According to Krikzz, the DSP version was a limited edition so I doubt he'll be making any more with the DSP. You can always have one fitted yourself however.

Ok thanks Bad Ad84 for your help. I have no further questions about this at the moment.

I don't think this is particularly cluttering the thread as it relates to a significant modification that purchasers of the snes everdrive may need to look into. (Others have discussed the n64 cic chip issue earlier in the thread)

And Rojaws has already said he will be setting up a snes everdrive modification thread in the future.

Peter
24th March 2012, 20:35
It wasn't a personal pop at you or anyone else Snoozy - I just thought it would be a good idea to have a central place for people to post questions about any model of Everdrive - SNES, N64 or any of the other models that we are purchasing.

I am sure there will be lots of question over the next few weeks so a separate set up, trouble shooting and Q&A thread was just an idea mate...

Anyway, not my call....

Yes. It doesn't work without the right one for your console.

It doesn't matter which ROMs you use as the Everdrive makes them region free.

If the above isn't settled however I will have to hold onto their orders and possibly sell them on. I PM'ed both of them days ago and still haven't received a response.

If you read this guys please get in touch to settle as I made it clear how the fees work and what the deadlines were. If this was anyone else handling this you'd have just lost out on your orders.

This group buy was for the Everdrive MD ? Correct ?

Not for the MEGA Everdrive ?

AmiNeo

Yes, Nobody knew about the MEGA Everdrive when this group was set up. I did contact Krikzz about it but he wasn't willing to include them in this group order due to the price of manufacturing and current availablity.

AmiNeo
31st March 2012, 15:43
Larger ROM size, faster load / flash times, USB, umm... Save states... those are the major things I think, aside from that the rest is yet to be implemented as far as I know but more features will apparently be added via software in the future.

There is a vid or 2 made by Krikzz on youtube...

I doubt there will be 'pages' added between the update and their arrival to be honest. Well, unless poeple keep posting suggestions to get around pages being added that is... :picard

In all fairness, I really couldn't say exactly when they're expected anyway. Krikzz told me up to 2 weeks from posting is normal. The 3 parcels were each posted about 3 days apart from each other and this is if we have no issues with delays in handling between the Ukraine and here. Putting expected dates on will just raise concern for people if they're delayed for any reason.

The last of the parcels was posted on the 9th so we're likely looking at the 25th before they're ALL here at the earliest. The Megadrive ones should get here before that though, but that is provided there are no hold-ups.

Thanks for keeping us all updated. Looking forward to powering up the old Mega Drive with some games I've always wanted to play... its like Christmas!
