View Full Version : Offered old xbox mod's UK (basic stuff) "not 360"

20th April 2012, 02:18

back now doing this sorta stuff again.
and now with mod chips back in stock.
not that much to tell really. just took a lot longer to get up and running again than was expected. (had worke done on a house, moved house, work done to this house, still need to re render the outside but im good to go now.)

--- note for all to read ---
decided to spread the joys of the classic xbox.
i sold lots of these things now and some people have decided to come and re order so i dont think il be listing any more for sale as i will probably only be making them to order from now on..
--- end ---

some aladin advance xt plus 2 "10each or 13 installed"
"remeber to add postage"

3x 160gb hard disks (fully checked passed all tests 100%) "16 for the drive."
"send me your eeprom.bin and il prep and softmod a hard disk or your xbox without you having to send it.. or if your hard modded il prep the disk ready for you) "remember to add postage"

40 or so stock 8/10gb hard disks (i will fully test them as needed. but all seem fine) "2 per drive. + 5 install fee"

(hard disk upgrades.. obviously you can supply your own hard disk if you have one.)
"a hard disk prepped and installed is 5 if you supply the drive. this includes a softmod to a unmodded box + disk upgrade option"

on the way.
10x 160gb drives

-- the service offered --
I have decided that the best way to spread the joys of the king of consoles. is to offer moding services.. (see the list of what i will do)
Obviosuly i will also price up consoles made to order, this should work out cheaper than me making them 1st then selling them after as i wont have to charge as much due to having money tied up in 6-7 consoles and needing to actualy eat and feed the baby.

-what i wont do--
i wont be doing ram upgrades "time consuming and fiddely,"
I wont do cpu upgrades
and with my overclocking experiments boards die fast so i wont be doing that either..

--What i will do--
I will tsop flash. (8 with no chip installed. or (17 dual boot with aladin)
"the 8 fee will pay for the work i did, so no additional gift payment is needed unless you feel you want to or more work was done.
the 8 fee is like an insurance policy so if the tsop gets corrupted i will install a chip so the xbox works. I have only ever had 1 tsop corupt, but it can happen so thats the cost"

hard disk upgrades (decided that people were being crasy with gift payments so i am setting a fixed price of 5 for a drive install. "if you supply the drive" if you buy the drive from me its free)

softmods. (same as a drive install people went crasy with gifts so its now set at 5)

I will happily repair boxes with dead hard drives. (again with the crazy gifts. this is considerd a hard disk upgrade so same pricing)

i will unlock stock hard drives that you have from a dead xbox. (this service is probably only really worth while if you have a lot of drives. most will have to be 100% wiped to unlock. )

i will look at faulty dvd players. although if its dead its dead.. (gift what you feel it was worth)

Il remove the clock cap for you. and clean up any issues that may have already happend. if the xbox wont boot without a clock cap. (have seen it happen) then i will move the cap above a controller port via kaynar wire and encase it in epoxy. this will prevent damage to the board if the cap leaks. check for dangerous foxlink psu's and rectify the error,
Sticky tray dvd's will be fixed when i find them.
(standard work done to all consoles. feel free to gift some money for this service, but it is not expected.)

Il repair traces that lead to xboxes automatically turning on and the dvd ejecting by its self excetera. "2"

if you have an xbox with a dead hard disk and just want a standard xbox hard disk its 2 for a stock hard disk + 5 for the install "7 total".
or i can put a larger hard disk in there. " a 160gb installed would be 16"
or if you send a hard disk to install in it "5"

i will also add usb port(s) to an xbox if requested (2 per port max 2 ports per consol. port 1 and 4 used as default can request any port. the game ports will still work)

I will attempt to repair broken controllers (i cant fix all controllers) but will offer to convert some broken controllers to usb if you wanted a usb port added.
(feel free to gift whatever you belive the work was worth)

if you need a 1.6 xbox chipped i have aladin chips.
(i will also offer softmods for 1.6's)

softmoded boxes are treated like a disk upgrade so 5 for a basic softmod install thats the same price if you want to softmod the stock hard disk, or upgrade at the same time (i would definatly rather upgrade than softmod the stock)

i will happily add software to the hard disks for free because thats how much i pay for the software my self. (free. this just takes time to add the software please dont send me any money for software. the software is FREE)

----more to read + PRICING PLAN---

if you send me an xbox to be softmodded/hard disk repaired/upgraded and at the same time i notice the xbox can be flashed then i will ask you if you want it Tsop flashed,

The pricing in general is prety simple though.
you have to cover the postage both ways and then the costs stated.

if you have a dead xbox with bad hard disk, and you want to softmod it and have a hard disk upgrade All you pay is for the hard disk upgrade. It is all the same job in reality..

It is not:
broken hdd replace : 5 (drive you supply)
Softmod install : 5
total = 10..

It is..
Brokend hdd replace with softmod "5" (drive you supply

if you only wanted a mod chip installed, and nothing els. then you only need to pay postage and the stated installed price of the mod chip.

Any aditional work takes up time and effort, "cap removal, psu check and so on"
but i dont really mind. so you dont have to gift me any thing. but if you do decide to gfit something for my time please dont go crazy about it.
(honestly i have had to re work this whole thing with actuall prices now because people keep gifting me stupid amount of money.. it was only ever ment to be a drink or 2, not a bottle of finest 20 year old single malt..)
So please dont make me try and figure out a price for these basic checks i do.. really they are only worth a drink or 2 at the most. and i dont mind doing them free. it means that the console will last longer and i wont have to repair it again.

I have updated this post because some people gifted quite a lot of money.
Granted it was 3 days work. but I thought i would add some prices.

I wont be adding a maximum gift payment accepted option incase people assume that its something that i expect to see. it really is a gift for my work if you dont want to pay a gift then its not expected.. its just allowed.

Im on skype as

you can message me on there if you like but im usualy here and will reply to Private messages.

or you can email me on my android phone email

Any questions feel free to ask.

can provide a home phone number upon request.

If your xbox has an issue that is not listed in the what i will do. and is also not in the what i wont do section. tell me what the issue is and il let you know if i think i can fix it.

PM'd with a few questions...

PM'ing a few questions! nice one! :)

24th April 2012, 02:17
I would love it if my clear green Xbox could be mod chipped and soft modded, if that's possible? I have been meaning to do it myself but time has gotten in the way...

24th April 2012, 02:28
Tokyo, if it's mod chipped you don't need it soft modded matey. The mod chip allows all the soft mod does and more. Or an alternative is to reflash the onboard tsop which is basically the same as a mod chip. The only advantage I can see for a mod chip over a tsop flash is dual bios ie hacked and original but since Xbox live no longer works with the original Xbox there is no need for the original bios

your clear green xbox is a v1.2
It can be tsop flashed.
Same thing as a mod chip "virtualy" unless your talking about executer 3 or similar with a LCD display. the diference is un noticable.

the mod chips i install will all be installed as always on Unless specificaly asked not to always be on.

but like i said your green xbox "like mine" is a 1.2 and can be tsoped.
Happy to do it if you want it done.

25th April 2012, 16:54
Thanks in advance to ShambleS1980, I've sent some funds for an HD etc and will be sending my crystal xbox to him in a day or two.

cheers! :)

1 trusty xbox back to working order.
before during and after pics.
"remind me not to use a crappy samsung phone to take pics again"

Pics now in the correct order sorry about quality.

"EPIC FAIL ON PICTURES.. I can only see them if im loged in to my other forum too.. I will fix it asap."

"edit". ok fixed the pics.. i cant believe no one told me they could not see them.
no cpu attached.. "bad sign"

So the cpu socket locking mech is snaped off and missing "probably why there was no cpu attached, and it came in a seperate bag"

This cap has to be moved..

Gpu heat synk held down with hot glue.. "seriously?" well that needs changing too.

Useless mod chip led connections Think il remove them img571.imageshack.us/img571/7240/20120424151957.jpg

OOH! Live pulling direct from a transitor! Lets just leave that hanging around the case.. "maybe not, il remove them as the cpu has no 740mhz switch so not needed" safer to remove it.

hmm.. like i said move this cap. Going to use some kaynar wire to give my self some testing room as i will be using multiple heatsinks in tests.

ditch the gpu bracket. and hot glue. I will make my own from a diferent bracket later.
forgot to check the clock cap, damn.. Its still there "seems to have been replaced not removed by some one els.. but its leaked!

looks like a few collectors are pretty coverd with the leaked crap.. Il neutralize that with some mild acid in a min.

Oh great.. ! 2 corroded traces Exactly oposit the clock cap on the underside of the board... i wonder how that happend.
more work hooray.

fiberglass pen exposes the traces. followed by a dab of solder. tin up the kaynar then tap them on the board. "trace start"

this end is easier. just follow the traces to silver little pads. add some solder to the pads. tin the wire tap them down.
trace fixed.. "glue down the wire so it wont snag going back in to the case"

Lol.. ok so it seems i missed out a lot of work..
obviously fixed teh cpu socket so it could 1st unlock to accept the cpu, then lock to locate the cpu once inserted. removed the clock cap, and cleand up the residue.
I added a new fan header. made a new cpu/gpu bracket (epoxy to the board + fastenings.) use a cooler master fan to create a fixing for the cpu heat synk. Mounted an extra fan for the GPU. modified the DVD tray to fit around the 3rd party fan at the rear. and to clear both heat sinks + mount the hard disk.
Did some wire managment. and a few other bits and bobs. "the cpu socket was the most annoying job though"
tested it out with a 47C stable at idle temp. then took it in to xbmc debug and ran it at 100% cpu load stable (no temps for that one. but it powers off at 88C so it did not hit 88c (i would estimate 60c) given that a IGR back to unleash-x resulted in 53c displayd.

100% working trusty 1.4Ghz xbox.

30th April 2012, 17:00
i will unlock stock hard drives that you have from a dead xbox.
I'd be interested on details on how you do this. If it involves desoldering the TSOP to extract the key then never mind but if this is some sort of software brute force / secure erase then I'd be interested.

30th April 2012, 17:07
all i need is the hard disks.
the western digitals i will do with atapwd.
u5's with a firmware flash, (black rubber cased seagate)
ux10's a serial programer. (white slim seagate)

so i can do all the stock drives.
Drives locked via software as an upgrade should be unlockable too using atapwd.

this is really more cost effective if you have a bunch of the drives that need unlocking. because postage costs factor in to it. and the drives really arent worth much more than 10 each on a good day with the wind behind them an 10 people biding.

30th April 2012, 17:20
All I was after was the technique so I could do it at home.

I've got a few slim white seagate drives here I had intended to use with big box Amiga's but was unsuccessful at using ATAPWD to unlock them. All of them came from boxes which Softmodded using the Krayzie Ndure SplinterCell Softmod but I don't think that sets a default MasterPWD (or if it does then I don't know how to drive ATAPWD correctly).

30th April 2012, 17:23
the slims need a serial programer.
There "to my knowlage" is no master password used by krazies as the drive is temporeraly unlocked by the xbox, and never unlocked to the point where the password has been removed and so can be changed or a master password added.

you can try
but im 99.999999999% sure that its is just using the original locking method.
You cant flash the slim ux10s by default either as they are UX family and not supported by the flashing utility.

if you cant unlock them then my sevice is offerd for these exact situations. But like i said you would probably need 3 or more locked drives to justify the postage costs.

30th April 2012, 18:01
I think I can make my own serial to TTL converter for 10p or so at work and have a go at that. Thanks.

Thanks in advance to ShambleS1980, I've sent some funds for an HD etc and will be sending my crystal xbox to him in a day or two.

cheers! :)

your xbox arrived today.
Its in reall nice condition, so i am doing my best to have the tamper proof stickers look un-tamperd.

already started to work on it. probably wont be able to get it collected tomorrow but you never know.
Im currently backing up the XBMC you have installed on the box, and i will transfer that over to the new drive. along with your saves and audio files excetera..

I see it already has an eeprom.bin file on the hard disk. But as i did not do it i willextract a new one from the xbox as i never trust ones that are already on an xbox..

If you need any more info or have any questions send me a pm/email/skype excetera.

5th May 2012, 15:47
all xboxes that were sent to me are finished and either returned to the owner or siting in a box wating for collection. so i need some more work,

5th May 2012, 15:52
its too bad you are over seas.
I have that Xbox that I got a few weeks ago, and would love for you to get at it.

i know of a few people who would offer similar services to me.
the only one in canada i can think of however is SPPV.. unfortunatly he insists on softmods only.
Also i thnk he would charge a bit more than i do.."having said that i have no idea how much he would charge, and could very possibly be really cheap"
but even if hes not that competitivly priced. with postage costs and conversions excetera it could work out although i have no reall idea how much you want done lol..

So yeah canada i know of some one. and then i know of some one in the usa too. "well more than one"

if needed i can open a dialoug between people who need a similar service in the us/canada. but the pricing may well be diferent, and chips/tsop flashing excetera may only be available to people in the us or willing to ship to the us. "obviously if your in the uk then i offer this service lol"

5th May 2012, 16:13
What I really want done now, is to go through it and see what it needs, after that, then we can discuss mods, I think I still have one guy's e mail thats local, he was into modding the Xboxes about 4 years back,
We will see.
Would you be open to selling just a hard drive to Canada that had some soft mods done?

5th May 2012, 16:16
with conversions and postage its going to cost you more in the end getting it from me. "even if its just a 8/10gb drive
BUT i know SPPV usualy offers that exact service.
if you have the eeprom for that xbox he will do it im sure.

however if you want me to check what the cost would be to send one then i will happily check for you.
but i would also need the eeprom file.

(edited the 1st post to add hardware prices for drives and chips excetera. also chip installs now include payment for work installing the chip, )

5th May 2012, 16:24
No problem.
Right now, I don't even know if this unit actually works. I got it at the thrift store for literally nothing and it came with no power cable or tv hook ups. I found a local shop that wanted an outrageous amount of money for the cables, so I jumped on ebay and bought some from China for a tenth of what the local guy wanted, and they are probably the exact same ones.
Should be arriving any day now.

after they get here and I can see if it works, I will probably decide from there, what I want to do with it.

some of those cheapo av cables are prety useless. BUT you can solder a resitor from the ground wire to the mettal sheilding of the av connection and it makes it 100x better..
for some reason they cause interfearance, but when you put a resister on the ground wire it works much better. i assume that this is purley down to reducing the statc thats geting fed back to the av.

also the power cable simply needs to be any figure of 8 cable. the breaker boxes were never officialy released with the xboxes. they sent them if you asked for one instead of recalling the console and fixing the real issue. (foxlink psu power in connection not properly anchored down)
So your much better off with anchoring down the power in part of the psu and using a figure of 8 cable rather than not doing it and using the breaker. because honestly.. the breaker does NOTHING.:double

Can I just add that Shambles is the man for Xbox consoles. I have a 128MB Xbox console off him and it was preloaded with all kinds of homebrew on it.

He is the real deal ladies and gentlemen.

10th May 2012, 01:55
my crystal has arrived, nice job Shambles!

Thanks again! ;)

Hi, I have messed up my 1.6 xbox HDD was softmodded but I tinkered ttrying to upgrade the drive! it gets error code 13 now (still boots original games) I would love a 80-160GB drive & a modchip.

Can you help with this and what would the cost be?

many thanks!!

17th May 2012, 01:04
hi i sent a reply to your pm. as for the costs of a hard disk and chip install.

if you just want to fix your softmod i can tell you how to do that for free. But wiont have a hard disk upgrade or mod chip involved lol.

21st May 2012, 11:08
Xbox arrived today as stated in pm..
sustained some bashing in transit it seems..

but seems to be in a fully working condition any way (well as working as it was before it was sent here lol)

It will be getting returned in a bigger box.. The dent on the box that seems to have caused the damage really is not that major. but this is one of those "brittle" plastic boxes..
and of course i will replace the case and front pannel. "no need for extra payment"
consider it a gift

all good so far :)

Due to a request of "please get it returned ASAP" the rest of the work was not documnted, and the box has already been collected and sent back. should be back with the owner tomorrow.

16th June 2012, 03:40
Because i dont offer softmods as a service.
"well i do. but seriosuly i dont like to charge people for something that would need to be redone if the hard disk faild"

I have thrown together a softmod "loaner kit"

Its quite simple..
has a Xbox memory card, and 2 games..
if some 1 wants to borrow it. let me know and they can pay postage both ways and be sure to send it back..

if your not known to me. its going to be a deposit to pay pal affair im afraid..
you can buy the kits some where for 13, so im saying 14 deposit Will mean you will send it back to get you 14 back right??

all deposits will be returned when the kit gets back.
Hopefully not many people will need to pay a deposit at all though as this is quite a trust worthy place.
Please dont ask if you may be offended if i state deposit is required.. As i would hate to offend any one.

But like i said most people wont be asked for a deposit. and its more for newly joined members, or people who have not traded/have 0 feed back or negartive feedback..

16th June 2012, 18:11
ShambleS, i know you say that u dont do the cpu and ram mod anymore, but would you consider doing it for payment?

If not do you know of anyone based in the UK that still does this service?

17th June 2012, 17:19
I have the ram, but i dont do the install.. (it takes way to long for me, i can do it but at my soldering skill level it takes a long time. so id only ever do it to a xbox if i was selling the box itself as it would be more cost effective for me and if anything did go wrong im not out anything serious.)

any one whos 1/2 decent with a soldering iron can do the upgrade though.
i just recomend using the latest IND bios..

As for the cpu upgrades..
Its next to impossible to find the friendtech adapters for the BGA to PGA conversion..

I do know of some 1 who had one for sale though..
but he was making a xbox mini out of it and just ran out of time.

my understanding is all the parts are there so you can either finish the case mod they started.
or convert it back to a 1.4ghz 128Mb xbox in a normal case..

i can link you to the guy via pm if you want

17th June 2012, 17:46
I can do the ram upgrade, just FYI. I have a thread in this forum and someone posted the pictures of my work on his Xbox.

But I do not have spare chips.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk. Please excuse any crazy auto corrects or lack of detail (links to info sources)

23rd June 2012, 16:57
prety much out of hard disks now..
i have a few 250Gb's left. "2 "

6th July 2012, 15:12
Hi mate

Do you still have Ram for the Xbox for 8 inc postage? I've got a v1.4 (I think) so these should work ok, yeah?

6th July 2012, 16:57
sorry the ram has been reserved for some one els :(
I should have updated the thread..

and on that note..

Repair shop is being shut down for a couple of weeks..
having the whole place rewired..
Had hoped to get a new place before now, but the electricians come in 20 days time.
They are also going to move the kitchen from the front of the house to the back turning the living room to an open plan kitchen dining thing. the old kitchen will become a "Utility room" they say they will be done in 2 weeks time.
if everything goes to scedule i should be back up and running in about 34 days.
but right now my tools and spare parts are being packed up.
"I have no idea what im going to do for a month with none of this income, i think i will live in bread and water lol"
Wish me luck on the lottery tonight. I could do with 42 Million lol.

8th July 2012, 23:34
Hello thought i better make a comment on here so you know i found your services via this forum thread, Just want to thank you for being so helpful and patient with my question regarding my problem i have with the Xbox.

Hopefully you got lucky and won the lottery but some how i feel you would have posted back on here if you had lol.

Anyway thanks again and hope your house work that is going on is going well.

9th July 2012, 01:02
always a pleasure to help when i can.. and nope no big lottery win for me..

17th August 2013, 08:07
ok a "couple of weeks ended up as more like 13 months lol"

should have some mod chips in again soon. have a few 160Gb drives in stock.
and almost ready to go :P

17th August 2013, 09:26
My Xbox is a bit iffy, sometimes it wont boot to dash, other times it just wont turn on. Its chipped

I have plonked a bigger HDD inside
I tried AID (think its called) with no luck, right now its sitting here as a paper weight,
I take it you can fix them, how much is return postage on these big buggers?

17th August 2013, 10:24
depends what the problem is but with my hermies console only should be about 6 one way.

maybe you would be better describing the problem in more detail.. and prehaps you can fix it with some help :)

17th August 2013, 10:35
Im rubbish at describing things,
Sometimes red light. sometimes green sometimes it blinks

17th August 2013, 10:43
ok well probably the chip is lose then. (one of the connections) or if its a 1.6 then possibly 1 of the re build points..

probably just needs some solder re flowed.

21st August 2013, 00:57
Shambles1980 performed an upgrade to my Xbox hd and OS with swiftness and courtesy

Thanks :D

23rd August 2013, 10:33
5 to13 working days till i have some chips back in stock..
"think i will have ran out of hard disks by then lol"

and ty snoozy :)

remember to keep the 8gb hard disk safe "its softmodded for that xbox"
if the modchip ever fails you can just stick that in the xbox. i have left all the files needed to flash the tsop on there. (and solderd up the flash points for you)
so you can just do 2-3 clicks and you will be hard modded again.

28th August 2013, 13:37
Just got my modchips in :)

i now have a bunch of aladdin chips available.

28th August 2013, 14:31
Hi, do you have any hard drives left and is it a case of just swapping the old 8GB for one your larger ones or do I need to mess around with swapping the IDE cable from the DVD drive etc?

28th August 2013, 15:00
if you have a mod chip or are tsop flashed its easy to install a new hard disk.
if you are softmoded (or not modded at all) its a bit more difficult and you have to cback up the eeprom data then use a pc or cloniong tool to lock the new hard disk..

i do have a few 160gb drives left (not that many)

i do offer the upgrade service for softmods or a chip install + disk upgrade. or a tsop flash with mod chip installed if the flash went wrong + disk upgrade.

but as your in ierland it depends where exactly as to what the cost of postage would be.

if you wanted to buy and install your self thats probably cheaper than sending the xbox back and forth.

let me know what you are thinking and i can see whats possible.

28th August 2013, 15:16
I can confirm the good service you'll get from ShambleS1980, having had two Xbox1's modded.

28th August 2013, 15:18
Yes, I am thinking postage may be expensive to send the whole unit :(

This is one hard modded when I bought it. It comes up with xecuter bits when booting. I'll open it up and take a picture in a few days if that will help?

I do have a softmodded one as well that has the old random power issues. What I was thinking of doing was taking the Samsung DVD out of the softmodded one (I heard it's the most reliable) and putting it into the hard modded one with the larger hard drive.

28th August 2013, 15:36
explain the probs with the softmod, we may be able to fix that.
and if your hard modded all you need is a hard disk and a copy of "hexen" heimdalls xbox engineering disk

put the new hard disk in the xbox, and then boot the xbox with the hexen dvd in the dvd drive
"dvd-r burnt at 4x or slower for best results"

i forgot to mention that i would prepair a hard disk for you. but i would need t know which bios you were using before hand. or i would need you to reflash the bios, to guarantee the disk would show up properly with all the files and stuff accessible.

i can walk you through the process of re flashing your mod chip if needed, (probably better to update the bios so you know its fully capable of using larger drives)

but if you wanted to buy a drive els where, then you would just use hexen as stated. :)

Thanks :D
With the softmodded one, the machine exhibits a range of problems with the power. Sometimes the power button doesn't work but the eject button does, although when you close the tray doing it this way it will sometimes power off again. It after a few hours playing it will shut itself down again. If you leave it plugged in it will switch itself on by itself.

What I've found as I am trying to play KOTOR 2 on it is just leave it unplugged over night, plug it back in and turn it on and once you've set the clock its good for a few more hours.

I've read it can be the traces on the child board containing the buttons that can get corroded over time, or Bryce suggested a few months back it could be one of the chips that has failed as he believed it was unlikely to be corrosion based on how I described it to him. I tried to take the machine apart over the bank holiday weekend but it seemed a lot of hassle to get to that board behind the front facia so I gave up before I broke it :(

28th August 2013, 16:00
if the dvd ejects itself when it gets pluged in, then you probably have corroded trace(s) on the actual mother board (not the front pannel pcb)
(probably from a leaking clock capasitor)

the front pannel pcb is prety easy to take off buy you have to remove the whole front of the xbox 1st. that will let you push down a clip and then you can push the power button and the front pannel pcb will pop out.
if the xbox turns off by its self after a set amount of time that could be due to over heating.
you could try and set your dashboard to a higer temp cut off point.
the official MS dash should not turn off the xbox fully but would error out with red and amber flashing lights if it was over heating.

without looking at it its hard to tell.

but my diagnosise would be.
its a 1.0-1.5 xbox with a clock capasitor that has leaked.
some damage was caused to the mother board damaging atleast 1 trace which causes the xbox to always power on. and dissabled the power button.
The console may also be over heating and so turns off.

Its unlikley. But a lesser issue could be that the front pannel pcb is shorting out on the sheilding (or other item in the xbox)
you can see the solder points on the back of the front panlel pcb without removing it..
you may want to try and insulate those.

i edited my previous post.

I still have a bunch of mod chips.
I have 3 160Gb drives + 10 on the way..

so let me know if i can do anything :)

Sorry, I've not had a chance to open the hard modded xbox but I will do this weekend to remove the time capacitor. This is the softmodded one, what do you think doc? Can she be saved or shall I let her go to the big xbox retirement home in the sky and lose the 10+ hours I've stuck into KOTOR 2?

http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o641/sir_beaker/P1030059s_zps9ec1a091.jpg (http://s1336.photobucket.com/user/sir_beaker/media/P1030059s_zps9ec1a091.jpg.html)

http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o641/sir_beaker/P1030058s_zps7afec60e.jpg (http://s1336.photobucket.com/user/sir_beaker/media/P1030058s_zps7afec60e.jpg.html)

What's my best option if I can save her? Last time I desoldered something I took the track with it so can I wobble it free and use a q-tip and lemon juice to clear it up??? :(

6th September 2013, 21:49
thats the clock cap.. if you cant desolder it wiggle it left and right like a rotten tooth it will pop off..

clean that up with a cloth.

then use some vinegar or lemon juice to clean up more. (maybe use an old tooth brush)

then get some alcohol iso-propily 99% is what id usually use, if you dont have that, Acetone free nail polish remover will work fine.

that should be good then..

6th September 2013, 22:52
Brilliant, thanks. I'll lift up the motherboard and see if there's any leakage underneath as well.

I'll let you know about the hard-modded one and see what the options are with the larger HDD.

Thanks again

Hi ShambleS1980,

Thanks for your help so far. I'll do this in 2 posts to make it easier to follow, one for the soft-modded xbox and the other for the hard-modded one

The good news is I removed the capacitor this morning and it still functions when I put it back together:

http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o641/sir_beaker/P1030064s_zpsf8427613.jpg (http://s1336.photobucket.com/user/sir_beaker/media/P1030064s_zpsf8427613.jpg.html)

and cleaned it up as best I could with a cloth, fresh lemon juice and the the isopropyl I use for cleaning cartridge connections (hopefully it's strong enough as the label went AWOL):

http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o641/sir_beaker/P1030068s_zpsc9175349.jpg (http://s1336.photobucket.com/user/sir_beaker/media/P1030068s_zpsc9175349.jpg.html)

Removed the motherboard and that looks fine:

http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o641/sir_beaker/P1030070s_zps3f49997e.jpg (http://s1336.photobucket.com/user/sir_beaker/media/P1030070s_zps3f49997e.jpg.html)

Now for the bad news. As soon as I put it all back together and it turned itself on without me pushing the power button. Turned it off and 10 minutes later it switched itself back on. Can you tell from the photo if the track has been damaged or is there anything else I can try?

---------- Post added at 13:25 ---------- Previous post was at 13:17 ----------

In regards to the hard-modded one I've taken a few photos as to what I see when it boots. I am not sure if this is the information you're looking for about the Bios version though for the HDD?

http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o641/sir_beaker/P1030073s_zps4c72f845.jpg (http://s1336.photobucket.com/user/sir_beaker/media/P1030073s_zps4c72f845.jpg.html)

http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o641/sir_beaker/P1030074s_zps730306cd.jpg (http://s1336.photobucket.com/user/sir_beaker/media/P1030074s_zps730306cd.jpg.html)

This is the mod chip installed:

http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o641/sir_beaker/P1030077s_zpse81e1ee1.jpg (http://s1336.photobucket.com/user/sir_beaker/media/P1030077s_zpse81e1ee1.jpg.html)

The layout is slightly different to the soft-modded xbox but I take under the dust the capacitor next to the large one is the clock capacitor leaking in this machine as well?

http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o641/sir_beaker/P1030076s_zpsa5c12725.jpg (http://s1336.photobucket.com/user/sir_beaker/media/P1030076s_zpsa5c12725.jpg.html)

Thanks in advance,

I have a 2005 model (one of the last I suspect) black Xbox here. Had it from new, but it's not been used since circa 2008.
Looking at having it chipped/hdd upgraded and using it for emulation and xbmc.
Is there anything else I should think about? Is the clock cap likely to be a problem?

7th September 2013, 15:13
you do have a broken trace there. is not the easiest thing to solder if you are not good with a solder but i will tell you how. after a while
(i will take pictures)

also it loooks like you are running an x2 bios. on your hard mod
i dont know which version though. if its 49xx or earlier then it wont take partition table data from the drive so you would need to prep the hard disk on that xbox. if i made one ready for you and sent it there is a good chance you wouldnt see the contents.
You could however flash the chip with the m8+ bios which would mean that i could prep and partition a hard disk here then just send that out.

also yes the clock cap is that one that has leaked a bit.
on v1.0-1.5 xboxes they are down by the controller ports. and on 2 over lapping circles that designate polarity..
(if you look at the picture of the 1 you removed you can see that there are 4 solder points under where it was and 2 overlapping white marks.)

And then if you look at your hard maodded one with the cap still in place. the cap is on top of 2 over lapping circles.. (i hope that makes sense)

on a 1.6 xbox they are a gold cap near the IDE connector. and cannot be removed or the xbox will not boot. the 1.6 ones do not seem to leak though..

And Glenn-s

if you wanted to send me the console to be chipped/hdd upgrade.
i do all the basic stuff at the same time.
(cap removal/clean up. psu check. and generally checking for faults/sticky drive trays)
But it should be a 1.6 xbox so should not have any cap problems or a faulty psu.

i could flash a chip ready for use on your xbox for you, and prep a hard disk and just send you those. however the 1.6 xboxes do need an lpc rebuild. (you solder 5 wires from points on the motherboard to the lpc header)
If you are confident at your soldering ability then i could just send you the hard disk and mod chip if you wanted to buy from me.

ok as promised i took some pics to show you where to solder to fix the problem..

you need to solder one end of a piece of wire at A1 then solder the other end at A2
And you also need to solder a piece of wire to B1 and the other end to B2.
I have marked them and show the location in the following picture:

http://img843.imageshack.us/img843/6571/p48t.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/843/p48t.jpg/)

Uploaded with ImageShack.us (http://imageshack.us)

This picture should be big enough for you to find the points..

here is the direct link. :

sorry i cant take a bigger picture than that.

some tips..

point a1 and b1 are probably coverd with laquer.
CAREFULLY use sand paper or preferably a fiberglass pen to expose the copper pad at a1 1st
use a 15w pencil iron if you have one and put some flux on the pad. hold the soldering iron to the pad for a second or 2. then with the iron still touching the pad. tap the pad with your solder.
this should add solder to the pad..

next measure out your wire and expose a tiny amount of both ends. dip the wire in flux and heat it with your iron then tap the solder to the wire this should add some solder to the wire.

now run your wire ABOVE the bottom 2 restors and BELOW the top 2 resistors,
so its not near point b1, (it will make life easier)
then line up the exposed solderd wire with point a1. You will need to use something to hold it in possition. just pin it down with a knife edge or tweesers.

When its lined up good. tap your iron to the wire for a second. and the solder on the wire and the solder on the pad should melt, remove the iron but keep the wire held in place with your knife/tweezers. after a second or 2 the solder should be solid again and thats your 1st point..

I would then use a tiny bit of hot glue to hold the wire down between the resisters. (use tape on the right hand side of the resister if you have no glue)

Point b1 you again expose the pad and add solder to it the same as you did with a1..
again cut wire to length and expose some of the ends. and add solder to it.
for point b run the wire allong the board straight to the b1 point (run it from right to left allong the bottom of the board)

here is point b1
Again tap it with your iron whilst holding it in place. and when its solderd glue it down..

Do not glue directly on the pad.. glue the wire down to the right of the pad. (that way if you need to re solder there is no glue in the way)

The a2 and b2 points are Giant football fields in comparison and do not need to get exposed.
but again heat up the pad for a second or 2 and tap the solder to it so it gets a useable ammount of solder on the pad.

Add solder to the other end of the wire.
and again hold down the wire lined up to the pad. and tap it down with the iron for a second.
do that for A2 and B2.

then glue the wire(s) down
again dont glue to the pads. glue the wire to the board
You would then also tape down the wires so they wont snag on the way back in to the case..

when you are done test it.
You should find that the xbox will only turn on when you press the button.

When its tested and working.
IF you would feel more comfortable putting glue on the pads where you solderd too that's fine.
but remember to let it be 100% dry before you power on again.

decided a picture would explain where to run the wires better..
so here you go.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us (http://imageshack.us)

The grey circle shapes is where i would put the glue or tape after it was solderd down..

7th September 2013, 18:26
I removed the cap from the hard-modded xbox and it looks to have eaten through more of the board maybe:

http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o641/sir_beaker/P1030079s_zps64246c55.jpg (http://s1336.photobucket.com/user/sir_beaker/media/P1030079s_zps64246c55.jpg.html)

cleaned up:

http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o641/sir_beaker/P1030087s_zpsb67a3cb7.jpg (http://s1336.photobucket.com/user/sir_beaker/media/P1030087s_zpsb67a3cb7.jpg.html)

After I had done that and connected it all back up to make sure I hadn't borked it I found this on the hard drive under the bios folder:

http://i1336.photobucket.com/albums/o641/sir_beaker/P1030089s_zps32d750e2.jpg (http://s1336.photobucket.com/user/sir_beaker/media/P1030089s_zps32d750e2.jpg.html)

Is 5035 likely to be the version installed on the machine?

Thanks for the information on where I need to solder I'll buy a low powered 15W solder iron and give it a go as I think the one I am using is faulty or set too high given the damage I am able to inflict in short amounts of time :) (blaming my tools :D)

7th September 2013, 18:38
well i will always reccomend a 15w pencil iron to any one not overly confident.
30w/40w irons are useable when you have a bit more expiriece. but mostly people tend to burn traces with those when they arent used to soldering..

One of these is perfectly fine.

they are inexpensive and have a nice small tip you can probably find one at a local hardware store for a little bit less than that.

it is possible that you have 5053 bios installed so that would mean i can prep a hard disk for you if you wanted me to do that.

The hard modded board will be fine like that. as a part of sheer luck and ignorance MS managed to put the caps in a reasonably safe place on the boards in the early versions. so the damage generally looks a lot worse than it is. "not safe enough that they didnt move the things to a totaly diferent sopt on a 1.6 and changed the type of cap used)

But it is a definate need to remove the things asap. Where as the area they are in isnt overly critical the damage can spread to near by components. (namely a transistor and a few other smd components) and in extreme cases it can eat through the board entierly.
but usually it just looks worse than it is.
once you neutralize it and clean up the area there should be nothing to worry about.

8th September 2013, 14:33
Sounds like what happens when I solder so I'll definitely go for one :D

That would be great if you could prep a drive. I'll PM you regarding price :)

Thanks again.

10th September 2013, 01:50
hey im gonna quote you 22 total for postage hdd + prep.
im basing that on expecting postage to be 6
if postage is less il refund.

making the drive now And i will check this post tomorrow and later.

i will be leaving the house in the mid-late AM so if you want your drive in the post let me know if the quote is ok with you before i leave.

15th September 2013, 19:19
I am now offering
a modchip + 160gb hard disk prepped for 25+ postage.
(thats a massive saving of 1! compared to buying one at a time!) lol sorry about the minimal saving..

i still offer the install service too. but i do charge like 3 to solder in a chip, and then the postage gets pretty high sending an xbox both ways.
so doing it your self would probably save you more than 10 compared to sending me the consoles, (depending on your location)

chips are factory sealed with lpc header. no rebuild board but i prefer a wire rebuild personally any way.

the chips come preflashed with an old bios.
but they will let you access the hard disk you get with it.
when you do
the 1st thing you would do is go to
admin tools
file explorer

a new window will pop up and you select
modchip\tsop flashing tools.

you should then go and select:
256k bios 1.0-1.5
Evox M8+
I know it says 1.0-1.5 but 1.6 xbox users can use that bios.

when its done flashing you will have full access to the hard disk.
(if you dont flash you will be stuck with pre lba48 support, and wont see the full drive)

if you had any questions about any of the process you could just pm or email.

I added this clip for a diferent forum. Shows the basic soldering method for installing the LPC pin header.
I really doubt any one here really needs this video clip... But seeing as i added it els where for the same advert here it is.

Please note. I do have some colourful language,
I am using a dead mother board.
I decided to use the cheapest soldering irons money can buy to demonstrate as i really dont think any one who has spent good money on soldering irons will want to watch my clip.

It is the most minimal and basic amount of soldering education. i dont cover cleaning the tips tinning the tips.

all i do is show 1 method i see people use that will not work.
show 2 diferent thickness of solder.
2 diferent powered irons "40 and 15"
demonstrate why flux is awesome sauce for soldering.
basic use of a desolder braid.
and obviously i demonstrate the correct way to solder the pins to the board.

it really is very basic.
the reason it is very basic?
because that is the lvl of skill needed to solder the lpc in place.
