Mods - not sure if to put this in here or elsewhere so please moved as is seen appropriate.

Basically we now have the go ahead to do a new run of revision 4 (030 based) of the GBA1000 board. This board will allow the indivision ECS flickerfixer to function among its many new features.

Kipper has managed to get a better quote than I have managed plus shipping is cheaper from Asia to the U.S than the UK.

The initial outlay would be approx $46 per board with an aim to order at the end of February. Once they have arrived a final invoice would be presented for shipment to your country. We are aiming for a minimum of 30 boards.

So please state if your interested.

To clarify these are plank pcbs which you must complete yourself with the help for the rest of the group for component sourcing. This doesn't come around very often so please state your interest.

Update * Now everyone has seen the shipping options payment will be taken from March 3th through to the 11th. You will pay $46 Canadian per board to kipper2k via paypal gift or plus $2 for standard protected whose address will be supplied. After the 11th of March no further pre orders will be available.

Paypal address will be supplied by the 3th of March. When you do so, in the paypal info you need to include the username and site you ordered from. Payment for shipping will be taken once the boards have arrived and you have decided how you want it shipped.*

To pay send Canadian $46 per board to kipper2k (insert the at @ sign around about here) mts.net with the above info.

Is this the one with the 060 CPU?

If yes then I declare interest.

Can you please post a link to eab/amiga.org?

Cheers

No this is the 030 - the 060 won't be released for a while if ever.

Sounds interesting, where would one source the parts to build it? would we need a donor 1000 or 500 board or is it more complicated than that?

Some parts are hard to source...

But hopefully we'll get a parts list?

28th January 2013, 12:23
A donor AMIGA 500 would provide the connectors for the rear of the board and perhaps a few sockets if you want to recycle parts. The rest are new parts easily available from rs components or digikey.

Some parts are only available in multiples of 10 which is where working as a group will be key. Total cost to build the board will probably be between 150-200 depending on how resourceful you and the group are. Kipper is trying his suppliers and is organising the actual board production.

For those who do buy you will be well supported.

Thats the minimum order of 30 boards achieved now which is excellent. The build manual is in German but I will translate it and place it on the build website for everyone to access. Moneys will be collected at the end of February. The more boards ordered the cheaper it gets for everyone normally.

Going greater than 30 is fine. As was mentioned earlier i'll put in an order at the end of Feb. Due to the cost of these boards and the cash i would have to outlay, i'd need people to pay $45 before ordering so i don't get stuck with a lot of boards from people changing their minds. Deposits will obviously deducted from final cost.

I would probably be able to get a lot of components at a decent price but i encourage people to see if they can find deals etc. Any opportunity of saving money is the way to go, shared shipping to same countries etc

I won't pester people with money requests at the moment. There are other things that i can help with. For example, the 29F800 48 pin TSOP, i can buy it, program it and put on the board for people if they like as that would be the hardest IC to actually solder to the board.

there are still a few things to think through but progress is good.

46 US dollars + shipping.

Complete boards won't happen, it would cost you over $500 if we had them factory populated in such limited quantities.

Once you have the hang of it you'll find the SMDs easy. I would recommend getting a decent SMD Reworking station.

Don't worry about the parts - you will be able to get them all. Links to retailers will be provided.

Hi,

the power supply connector is one of the items that's scavenged from an old Amiga. I believe the A500 has a higher power rating than that of the a600/A1200 power supplies

hi all,

hopefully some good news

i received a reply for a quote i wanted for some components... heres the answer

50 Motorola MC68030RC50B 50MHZ PGA-128 Microprocessor,$31.37/ea,

50 through hole sockets for the MC68030RC50B 50MHZ PGA-128:mini order quantity is 100pcs,$5.2/ea;
250 Cypress CY7C1049CV33 512K x 8 Static RAM (36 pin SOJ) or equivalent ,$1.73.

So, i can get the processor, the Ram chips and also the CPU socket (although i would have to order minimum 100 for them to entertain the order of the sockets..

How's them prices sound ?. Bear in mind the shipping costs and duties that i would have to pay so it would be a little higher

I'll check on the other component prices later

edit; each board will require 16 ram chips. I just selected 250 as a ball park figure

So this board will fit in the Amiga 1000 as it looks ? will the internal PSU of the Amiga 1000 work with this ? And, does an A2000 MB have all the necessary components to populate this board otherwise ?

PJM
29th January 2013, 18:52
It depends on the revision of the A2000. You basically need the custom chips and connectors from it, almost everything else is new. I sourced a dead A2000 board for this very reason.

Darn, i'd be tempted, but am worried of 'obstacles'!
You see, if these boards/kits arrive from the UK, all would be fine. But if they arrive from the US, it would involve customs.. :(
I think customs-free pass goes for items of USD 40 or less here. After that, god allmighty knows what they charge (there's no standard per se).

kipper2k
29th January 2013, 19:41
HM customs have a set rate that they apply, not sure what it is, if the board was valued at $39 then you would probably get a free pass. Only one person in the UK got charged customs on a package i sent as they over-estimated its value. but thats the luck of the draw.

sometimes its worthwhile sending in 2 packets to keep down costs and customs hassles

Thanks for your reply! You see, the customs story is very complicated here.
They don't just count what the value of the package is, they sum it all up (which means they get the total with shipping charges!)

There is only the one component that is considered tough. Anyone can solder, its like any trade, you must have the correct tools. the hardest component on that board (the 48 pin TSOP) can be soldered in less than 30 seconds when you know the tricks. there are lots of good tutorials on how to solder, but as i said, ya gotta have the tools

Based on the manufacturing, mailing and customs charges, i reckon the boards will cost the end user ~$46 plus cost of shipping. It looks like i can mail them "small Packet" which would cost $9.10 to most parts of Europe and up to $11 for the other countries.

What we intend on doing is finding out who is interested and then towards the end of Feb i will ask people to pay $45 and then order the boards based on who pays so that i am not left holding the bag. (in this case - boards). We expcted and hoped for 30 and have had a great response.

Here's a thought,

I am buying a 3D printer that is capable of making 3D models that i can print in plastic (PLA and ABS) so in theory i can actually make a custom case.

Now the down side, the case would be bigger than the maximum print size i can create so any case design would have to be in 3 or 4 parts and then use a "snapin" or screw design to work.

My skills in 3D design is strictly as a beginner so if anyone knows CAD and wants to design something that can work let me know. Print files need to be in .STL format

here's the max design size i can create.

I was discussing that with kipper2k. The schematics for the GBA1000 board give a great starting point to a CPU mounted A500 design although I would use a different IDE solution to the one on the GBA board. Who knows what the future could bring.

I'm not trying to argue the morality of it but I do have about 3 x A1000s I think

1 unit for me please. Thanks.
Pending to know the shipping cost to FRANCE, if possible.

kipper2k
30th January 2013, 13:09
I mentioned earlier that shipping to most countries would be small packet. The postal rates here for most countries would be $9.10 for anything under 250gram. i am not sure of the weight of these boards but i think it it has to be at least 180gram. The boards need to be packaged with stiff cardboard to protect them so this may put them in the next weight bracket of 251 - 500 gram which would double the cost to $18.20. This is the actual prices charged by Canada Post. The packing materials i will provide as i work in a hospital and we get deliveries all the time so i scavange package materials.

I think we should set up a Parts thread in EAB (in the Hardware mods section) so that people can identify parts, their possible sources and prices and ask questions. I can probably get quite a few but please look as well. Digikey and Farnell probably have the logic chips and other components

edit :i just done a little math using existing boards and sample weights an i think i was way off with the weight of this board. I think it is closer to 350gram

Here is Canada Posts rates.

http://www.kipper2k.com/lightpacket.pdf

If people can combine their boards into 1 package then they will be able to reduce their costs :)

PJM
30th January 2013, 16:11
I think that's incredibly cheap considering the distance covered. We can look at a few options like mass shipping the European ones and distributing here but I don't think it would be much cheaper.

Unfortunately the kids in the Chinese factories need a break once a year and production will close down across all of China for their New Year celebrations. The order will go in as soon as they are open at the end of Feb. The boards would likely be with Kipper2k by the end of March/early April.

Yes - theres an additional ram expansion you can add which adds something like 32mb from memory.

I think i could have the boards earlier. If people who declare interest pay by 20th Feb, i can put in order. It takes about 10 business days for the order to be completed and about 10 business days for me to get my hands on them. that would put the boards ready for mailing to end-users by last week of March. Pretty soon i am going to have to find out who wants to buy the CPU's/sockets from me. I have a RFQ in for the 68882 50mhz FPU so hopefully i'll have a price for that soon.

Is there a possibility to discuss a couple of things in regards to a suitable case? (I don't use the other Amiga sites).

I don't have an Amiga 1000 case, so is there any 1:1 scale drawings, that i can print off? Also is the A1000 case the same dimensions as the Commodore 128D case? (for measurement reasons).

A separate 'technical' thread on Amibay might be idea

i will put together a shopping list on the weekend and see what i can come up with. I'll try to get it soon but i won't order extra parts until i receive payment for boards (so i don't get stuck with too many parts).

for example, the ram chips... 100 boards, 16 chips each... at $1.73 each, thats a lot of money so i won't buy until i know who needs them. Hopefully the price will drop on them too now seeing as we have more buying power

webheadx1

how i solder a tsop.

1 you need 1 mm soldering tip soldering iron about 15w or variable not too hot or leads will come off.

1mm solder i use silver solder .

now flux tsop pins on the board with the flux pen.

put tsop on the board by using a pencil with bluetack on the end now stick your tsop to bluetack in the middle of chip, now lower chip onto board make sure its in middle with same amount of legs poking out on each side, now put a tiny bit of solder on iron now push gently down on tsop and solder 1 outer leg then make sure its still square then solder the oposite side 1 leg.

now its on square with 2 legs soldered now flux the legs ontop of chip , now put solder onto iron again gently touch each leg pressing down with iron but moving out away from board you got todo this quickly and you can basicly feel and here it being soldered ,do this for each leg being gentle but quick.

i can solder these on like this in about 1 minute with no mistakes and if you join 2 legs simply solder pen over area clean you solder tip and gently drag down the pin away from chip and it will solder and take away any excess solder perfectly.

ill make a video its easy really.

Price for the TSOP is yet to be sorted but won't be a lot. Its the most complicated to solder but to be honest, once you've got the hang of SMD you'll find it relatively easy. Kipper2k will offer this service if he chooses to do so. We need the logic file for this TSOP, its not in the files from Georg website.

Shipping cost to Germany would likely be under $20 IMO. But this can't be 100% until we have the boards to physically weigh them.

Just use a socket for the 40mhz oscillator and replace it with a 50mhz one and matching cpu when you find one cheaper.

There is a chance that we obtain the common parts (without Commodore chips) with the same method as the motherboard.
(I'm sorry if this is cheeky suggestion)

===> sockets, capa, resistors, chips RAM, processor, connectors.
All without that we can find in a A500 or A600.

In this case, we all receive our PCB and 90% of the component list, for a better price and low shipping cost.

PS: sorry for my poor english...

PJM
13th February 2013, 10:22
Some of the components yes but it would require serious investment to do the lot. Your talking a few hundred dollars per board x 130 boards so far.

We're better off group buying the RAM, Processors etc, maybe the GALs and PALs. Everything else is easily available from most suppliers like cpc or rs components. For the smaller components there will be a list with links, just click the link, add to basket and buy. Hopefully there will be a European and an American list.

I think it would be good a common part pack; sockets, capa, resistors, chips RAM, connectors, because all of these things available as new.
The processor is questionable, because in some cases already have, and almost available as second hand. (but I'm interested in a full set of course)

the ordering would be similar as the PCB. Pre-registration, and prepay.

What is a TSOP one ore more that one programmed IC on the Board?
If the "logic files" are not on the website how you will get them?

Georg write on his website he don't help ore support anyone at this project.

We now have everything we need now Georg has taken the time to explain it to us.

OK, my friend from a1k want now to 100% also a GBA Mainboard. That means I update my order +1 GBA Rev. 4 Mainboard.

What are the chances of anything being faulty however? Not that I want to start yet another tangent ;)

In my experience - it just hardly ever happens. Most components die during the assembly process.

Good point to raise though.

Hi, I would like to put my name down for one of these boards please! :)
Ive challenged my GF to really build a computer, from component level, and shes accepted the challenge.

No need here for soldering any of the SMD parts though, Ive got a nice setup at work for that :)

Just a quick note to let people know i will start canvassing for payment next week..

I am able to buy a lot of the components for this project so before you start buying bit by bit from everywhere ask me.

Providing everyone who has shown interest pays, then the prices of the boards should come down about $3. Price if the 68030 50MHz CPU is about $31 for over 100 purchased and the CPU socket $5. (a little bit of duties to be added to this)

I was able to locate the schematic for the Video Hybrid chip (the long black 22 pin chip) and i will be able to make them.

http://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=869457&postcount=221

I have tracked down the GAL's and i can program them so that will relieve a lot of hassles for people.

More info later.

Hi all,

time for an update of sorts....

It's time to talk about shipping options for these boards to the individual end users.

There are a few options available for sending these boards, some cheapish, and some downright expensive.

the link for rates is here...

http://www.canadapost.ca/cpotools/apps/far/personal/findARate?execution=e1s1

Small packet air is the cheapest (and no tracking info & no insurance) at $18.20 for weight of 250gr - 500 gram. I do not know the weight of the

boards so i am assuming that hopefully 1 board and associated packing would be in this weight range.

As the weight of the package increases then the cost becomes cheaper. for example, a 3kg package sent express post to UK to a

group of 8 users would cost $100 and has full tracking capabilities. The 3kg package could probably contain 8 boards so the cost

per board to arrive in its destination country would be approx $12.50 and then of course local customs would try to get their

cut. (customs value would be low) and the boards would need to be forwarded on to the local persons in that mailing group.

mailing options (box dimensions would be approx 16" x 16" x 2")

Priority post... Don't even think about the cost

express post Int'l - tracking number, delivery confirmation and optional Signature option ($2.50). included insurance for $100

and $3.50 for each additional $100

Tracked packet - with tracking number and $100 insurance (remember that if you want the $100 insurance then the item has to be

declared to customs as $100 so expect higher duties). This is only available for max weight of 2KG

small Packet Air int'l - No tracking number, max 2kg package, no insurance available and cheapest of all air delivery options

Int'l surface - cheapest, no insurance, no tracking... verrrrrrrry slowwwwwww. max 2kg package

sample table of costs

weight (Kilo).......express......tracked.......small
........................post...........post.........packet

0.5k.................. $75...........$47...........$18
1.0k...................$75...........$57...........$35
2.0K...................$81..........$70............$53
4.0k...................$122.........n/a............n/a
8.0k...................$186.........n/a............n/a

*** the above rates are for the UK, so your country may be slightly different ***
n/a means not available. Use the Canadapost link i gave earlier for more info

USA should be cheaper...

1kg to USA - options are... express post = $36, Expedited = $22, and tracked parcel = $19 (they all have tracking number

If people want to do group mailing then work it out between yourselves and let us know.

I calculate the approx weight per board = 350 grams, but guessing.

I just checked the cost for 50lb box sent to UK using priority post. it would cost $650... for that price i could almost fly

myself there and put the boards in my luggage lol.

If you choose an option with no insurance then i cannot be held responsible if it gets lost in the mail

I'll update these threads later but basically now everyone has seen the shipping options payment will be taken from March 7th through to the 14th. You will pay $46 Canadian per board to kipper2k via paypal gift or plus $2 for standard protected whose address will be supplied. After the 14th of March no further pre orders will be available.

Paypal address will be supplied by the 7th of March. When you do so, in the paypal info you need to include the username, site you ordered from and your delivery address. Payment for shipping will be taken once the boards have arrived and you have decided how you want it shipped.

First posts will be updated this evening to reflect the above info.
