The ULAs are very difficult to find and can be temperamental - especially if you have to desolder one!
There are also problems in that many of the early ZX81 ULAs lack the back porch latch - meaning that on modern / colour TVs you end up with black writing on a very dark image.
The answer is to look at the ZX-ULA2 from Andy Rea - this is a complete replacement, complete with back porch latch and composite video out - plus it has a turbo mode to make the ZX81 run a lot quicker!
