View Full Version : For Sale CDTV-SCSI Do-It-Yourself Sets - BULK ORDER

This is about the second batch of the centralized buying for the Do-It-Yourself CDTV SCSI module by MatthiasH. The project requires medium skills in soldering. Soldering has to be done by you or your friend!
The project description can be read here (http://www.a1k.org/forum/showthread.php?p=638802#post638802) and the final version with German build instructions but a lot of self-explaining pictures can be found in post #63 or here (http://www.a1k.org/forum/showpost.php?p=650876&postcount=63).
As you can see the images only as a registered user, I tried to create a PDF document (but unfortunately the pictures are pretty small): 82759

What is it and for which computers can it be used?
This is a redesign of the reference SCSI-Module for the CDTV from Commodore. It also works in an A570, but sticks out at the end.

What can this thing do?
It adds a Autoboot SCSI-Controller to your CDTV with one internal 50-pin SCSI connector. The SCSI-bus is terminated on the PCB. The termination cannot be switched off. The driver is already included in your CDTV-ROMs. The use of Version 2.30 ROMs is strongly recommended but V1.0 ROMs work too. An unpatched system supports hard disks up to 1GB. A possible way to patch this can be read here (http://eab.abime.net/support-hardware/33675-does-waw-cdtv2scsi-have-1gb-limit.html). The CDTV still boots from your CD-Drive first, if a CD is present!

How to set up the hard disk?
You can set up the hard disk via the regular HDToolBox (scsi.device) or better using the HDInstTool from the aminet. There will be no special installation disk. You can use the a590-ones as a basis.

What are the extra connectors?
The design has two Jumpers and one solder-blob-jumper. The solder blob simply switches the clock of SCSI-Chip from 7 to 16MHz. The other two jumpers give you the possibility to put an activity led somewhere in your CDTV. The second jumper is a disable switch, which allows you to see the nice rotating CD instead of booting directly from the hd. The switch and LED are not included. Its your own business, if you want these options.

What can this card not do?
There is no external connector, because we do not want to build a custom cover for the case. If you really want an external drive, you can put a internal to external connector at the end of your internal SCSI-Cable and find your own way to put the connector through the CDTV-case.

Where to put an internal hard drive?
Between the CD-Drive and the power supply is enough room to put a 3.5" drive. SCSI2IDE-Adapters work well, too. With IDE-CF adapter you have a very silent retro-Media PC!

--> HERE YOU FIND NEW INFORMATIONS FOR THE THIRD BATCH (2015) <-- (http://www.amibay.com/showthread.php?50703-CDTV-SCSI-Do-It-Yourself-Sets-BULK-ORDER&p=667484&viewfull=1#post667484)

The order works like the first batch:

Everyone who wants to buy some sets registered his amount in this thread and sends a PM to me. The deadline for this is 13th of October 2013. Everyone has to pay in advance. This is necessary, because the parts cost much more than 1000. AFTER that date MatthiasH orders the necessary components. Producing the PCBs will take at least 3 weeks! So be patient.
When everything arrived at my place I will organize the bulk order, packing and shipping ... This is a one-man show, so packing and shipping can last for some days here, too. I'm a human with a job no robot.

Technical questions about function, etc. please ask directly to MatthiasH,or better here (http://www.a1k.org/forum/showthread.php?p=638802#post638802). We speak English ;). In this thread it's all about the centralized buying only, no support!

The project contains: PCB, parts and an AM33C93A-P16 SCSI-Chip.
The price is fixed to 13. This covers all the parts and the packing.

Insured shipping as a big letter with tracking number is 7 to everywhere in the world for up to 4 sets, otherwise a little bit more. The paypal fees have to be payed by you if you haven't gift option. Customs might be an issue, so Ill write a customs declaration label if wished otherwise not!

Remember:
End of order is 13th of October 2013! Shipping should be possible in November/December 2013.

If you are interested, please write in this thread and gives a number of items do you want.

For all how didn't get my email:

So, we have a little problem. MatthiasH unfortunately ordered the wrong resistor networks :( The only 9 pins and it must be 10 pins.

I get hopefully no later than next week, the right networks and will you then send it as a normal letter. Very annoying, because these costs (about 1 EUR) were of course not planned, but the problem lies with us.

I want to apologize to this point again for this error!

Hi,

mine arrived, and now I'm waiting for the resistor, but....

in the kit is present a 250mA Fuse instead of the 200mA indicated in the instructions, is the same?
if no, is not a problem, i can buy it by myself, but need to known it.

thanks for all !! is a great work !

ps. are still available other kits?

regards.

o.eschi
1st December 2013, 14:23
My heart is just slipped a second time in the pants :D

MatthiasH has ordered the 250mA version because the 200mA it appeared to be too low. In this case, everything is correct :)

And yes, I have still 5 sets.

Hi Olli, I'm sure a good few people reading your updates about the part mix-up wouldn't want you to be out of pocket over this. Would you be OK with anyone wanting to do so sending you a few euros to cover your costs. I know this project isn't making a profit so it only seams fair.... hopefully you might even consider some other little projects for us in the future :)

Olli: I have just ordered some components and I bought myself the missing resistor networks. No need to send me any. I hope you don't make any losses because of this incorrect part issue and I look forward to see more kits for Amigas from you :)

I think a few people have thought that Olli shouldn't be out of pocket here... :) Fantastic of Olli not to ask for the money, but hopefully in between a few of us bunging a few euros to him it shouldn't be too bad. It's still a cracking price for the kit!

As I posted, I ordered my own resistor networks from a local parts supplier. I double-checked that I ordered the right part.. and then, as I opened the packet, there were two correct resistor networks and two incorrect ones (yep, two more of those 9-pinnies!)

As I wanted to test this thing, I put in sockets for the two 330 ohm networks, inserted the 9-pin parts and added two 330 ohm resistors and soldered an extra wire to complete the circuit. Ugly but works, at least for testing.

In the first post there is a link to german assembly instructions. What does it mean on the part "Antwort: SJ1 wurde gesetzt. Der schaltet den SCSI-Takt zwischen 16Mhz und 7 Mhz um. 16MHz sind eigentlich vom Treiber nicht vorgesehen, funktioniert aber trotzdem und ist schneller"? Google translation of that doesn't make sense. First I put the solder blod to the 16M setting (as it is in the picture) but it didn't work (boot shows grey and white screens but than halts at black screen).

Switching the setting to 7M I was able to boot my CDTV from a SCSI hard disk! The installation on the disk was a WB3.1 from an A4000 and it didn't boot correctly on a CDTV (no suprise) but I was able to access the HDD succesfully.

I put a Molex power splitter cable and took the power for the HDD from the CDTV's cd-drive's power cable. Seems to work (+5v line was around 4,92v with everything running) just fine. As I don't have any SCSI-IDE (and then IDE-Compact Flash) adapters to put inside the unit, I think I am going to put an external SCSI connector to the rear panel of the CDTV and use some external SCSI HDD box. Problem at the moment is that I don't have any extra SCSI HDDs.

Photos available here (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/27fq89yby7ivy1r/Gihj6oeHrJ).

Again, thanks for producing this great little gadget, Olli!

Oh, I didn't produce it - I only organize the bulk order in cooperation with MatthiasH (he produce it!). Please ask him for informations about the 16 mhz option. Normally you should use 7 mhz.

Hi,

the solder-jumper SJ1 switches the speed of the SCSI-Chip from 7 MHz to 16MHz. Usually this increases the performance dramatically and up to now I never heard of any problems. Theoretically the timings stored in the CDTV-ROM need to be patched aswell, but again: I never found any problems (up to now - I like to make my products better).
The original design of Commodore was based on the 7MHz. So I left this option for compatibility. I suggest you double check your soldering, especially for the oscillator, Pin 7 of the SCSI-Chip and the 74HCT245-buffer. The board definetly works at 16Mhz! If the probelm "magically" disapears and reapears, think of cleaning the expansion socket and the slot-contacts. The expansion socket was unused for decades and oxidated. Sometimes several replugs do the trick.

You can test SpeedGeeks softwarething for the 14Mhz A2091-Mod to set the correct timing parameters, too. It should work here, too. But it needs to be executed at every boot which is bad if the HDD does not show up at all.

I visit amibay only seldomly. So feel free to ask questions at a1k.org: Easy registation, great forum, registered users see several hidden areas with a lot of off-topic and funny stuff, which is hidden for giests and most of us speak english, too.

Fancy a VGA-graphic card for the A500? Fancy a Autoconfig-RAM/IDE board for the Harms-Turbo? Fancy a HDFloppyFix? Fancy a A600-1MB Chip PCB? Everything is there and we usually organize bulk orders quite frequently ;).

If there is a urgent request in this thread, please send me an PM to notify me about it. I get an email notification for pms.

With best regards

Matthias

I haven't received the package for 2 units yet. But I did get the resistor packs. Has there been a delay in shipping or maybe an oversight?

How can it be possible that you have more than a month a package at home and not know about that? Work with the investigation request was therefore unnecessary :(

I'm really sorry, but an international bulk order makes damn much work. In addition, it costs good money if you make a mistake :( If you still have further unnecessary work, then you very quickly lose interest in it ...

Hi Olli
I got my Scsi card kit working in my cdtv .... i had the auto config set on my 020 card and it wasnt letting me format the harddrive . i have OS 1.3 booting and having flashbacks to my first A500 ... there was a lot of really good workbench type software back then ... i forgot how much fun it is ...

i have a rom switcher installed in the cdtv but i cant boot to OS 2.04 with the extra cdtv roms on and if i switch them off i cant boot off the scsi card ...

do you know or is there someone on AmiBay that can burn the enhanced Roms for the cdtv ... as much as i like to play with OS 1.3 i would like to also be able to switch and boot into a current OS like 2.04 ....

then maybe a indivision scan doubler as the tv i have the cdtv on does not like interlace and flickers alot...

thanks for the scsi card kit ...it works great ... when it wasnt working at first I went at it with my soldering iron afew times checking every joint thinking that my work must of been dodgy ... lucky i didnt do more damage then good ... if i can build this kit anybody can as i have not done much soldering in years.

Thanks again
and if anybody can burn the enhanced cdtv roms that would be great ..
Keep Amiga Phreakin .

Ok, I'm considering currently, if I perform another bulk order.

Anyone interested? How many kits do you want?

In a small edition, the unit price will be around 20 EUR. From 50 orders only about 15-16 EUR (excluding shipping costs).

You could order complete kits (for self soldering), only the boards ( around 9-13 EUR, depending on the amount) or only the SCSI chip (3 EUR).

The final price I will post when I can estimate the amount of approximately kits.

International shipping will cost 7-12 EUR. Depending on the total value.

EDIT 18.01.2015
I put the final price fixed 17.50 EUR for a complete set. It is time to give sockets for the resistor networks! In order for the parts price is a bit higher, but it is more flexible if you want to use an external port ...

There are the following options:
Complete kit -> 17.50 EUR
Board only -> 9 EUR
Only SCSI chip -> 3 EUR

International shipping:
7 EUR (up to 25 EUR total value)
9 EUR (EUR 100 total value)
11 EUR (up to 200 EUR total value)

The deadline is set to 31.01.2015.

MatthiasH wanted today order the boards for the bulk order and is stumbled across the following message: http://www.leiton.de/en-leiton-hinweise.html

This means for the delivery of the order, unfortunately late March / early April, when everything else works! Then most of you mid / late April keeping the order in the hands :)

Sorry for the delay, but we could not know that! I'll try to deliver the orders as quickly as possible if I have the boards!
