Automatic Kickstart Switcher for AMIGA 500/600/2000

Rule 1: The Switchers are not available as kit, and will not be.
Rule 2: If you can't wait, please, don't declare your interest.
Rule 3: If you declare your interest, you accept to wait.
Rule 4: If you agrees with the Rule 1, Rule 2 & Rule 3, you can declare your interest!

Thank you for your understanding!

1-Features :

- The Kickstart Switcher allows you to use two versions of the Amiga Kickstart up to the KS3.1,
- The time of the long reset can be select with a 3 pins jumper 4s or 20s),
- The priority of the default Kickstart chip used on the boot of the Amiga is selectable,
- The switching of the Kickstart chip is viewable with a bi-color square LED (Red/Green).

2- Youtube video link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYlIchaMuZw&feature=youtu.be
Video made with the prototype board.

3- Quick but complete installation Manual in PDF!

143842

The manual covers the installation of the switcher for the AMIGA 500 / 2000 and 600.

4- My Switcher is ready?

If your Switcher is ready (tested), your line into the table is updated. When it's ready for shipment, look at chapter 5 below!

When some switchers are ready to be shipped, I send a message, then after seven days, if I have no news from the recipients, they will be put at the end of the list.
I remove from the table members who come onto Amibay frequently (sometimes everyday) and who never open my PMs.
I have decided to make like that since some members seemed to be very hurry to receive their order (multiple posts & PMs), then, strangely, when I send them the PM... no more news from them!
And this is not because they don't visit Amibay each day... So finally, the following members have the chance to rise into the list!

Thank you for your understanding

5- Payment:

When your switcher(s) is (are) tested and ready to be shipped, I send a PM to ask for your postal address and to give you the total amount and my Paypal address.
I DON'T ASK FOR PAYMENT BEFORE THAT YOUR ORDER IS READY TO BE SHIPPED.

Payment by Paypal with Gift option or buyers pay the fees.

6- A quick presentation:

"Stand alone" plugged directly into the ROM socket of the Amiga. Price: 13.50€
Perfect for Amiga 2000 with or without Accelerator board plugged into the processor slot near the 68000.
Perfect also for Amiga 500 installed into a tower. Not usable into an A500 desktop

78263 77327

"Ribbon version". A little ribbon-PCB is plugged into the ROM socket of the Amiga. Price: 21€
The Kickstart Switcher is connected to the ribbon-PCB via a 40 wires ribbon.

Usable into AMIGA 500, 2000 & 600.

This version is usable also into an Amiga 600. My A600 doesn't run with the KS1.3. I don't know why.
So, onto my A600, I have tested the Switcher only with KS2.05 & KS3.1.

Count me for one, how much could be?
Edit: Count me for two! maybe in a DIY kit with components to have some fun assembling and save some euros... Dont know the component list only sourced 74HC73 (0,50€), the rest could be hard to find here in Portugal

Tuxbar81

I use Oshpark.com to produce the PCBs. The first batch of only three PCBs costs me $19.15USD (around 14€).
The price for one PCB is $6.38 / 4.16€.

To reduce the cost, I need to have enough interested people to obtain a minimum surface of 150 inch² of PCB.
Like that, the price for one PCB is $3.83 /2.77€!
Assembled with components, I hope to be able to propose a price around $20 / 15€ maximum without shipping rates. (not expensive, very lightweight parcel).

OK,the prototype works fine... but, I have made a little modification.
The final version will allow to select on which Kickstart your Amiga will boot by default.
There is now onto the PCB a square 4 pins connector (see the picture below).
If the two jumpers are set horizontally, the Rom into the first socket is used for the initial boot.
If the two jumpers are set vertically, the Rom into the second socket is used fot the initial boot.

6, it's possible! :) but not too many?!
A kickstart switcher with three Rom? The problem here is the logic to change the Kickstart.May need some changes.
Kickstart switcher for A1200? I don't know. I have never thought about that. The Kickstart is in a dual Roms. Actually, I need to look if it's possible.

If there is enough interest for a CDTV switcher, I'll make a new design of the PCB.

The Switcher can works onto the A600, the problem is the space under the Keyboard.
I think the adapter needs to be deported witha ribbon.
I'm going to see onto my A600... I didn't think about this computer.

The 8Mb+IDE board comes over the kickstart socket.
It's not possible without and adaptator to place it away (ribbon wire). So, actually, it's impossible.

- - - Updated - - -

Any luck seeing if it fits in the amiga 600?

Here also, the only way is to put away the kickstart switcher and connect it onto the motherboard with a ribbon wire.
It's possible to do and adapter, but a lot of interests will be necessary to limit the fabrication's cost.

You'll find also my Paypal address and the final price (price of the board + shipping costs)

I second Scoobyatgb for the ribbon cable... switching between 1.3 and 3.1 ROMs is useless if we don't have IDE and more than 1MB RAM, no?

To put away the adapter, we need a ribbon wire. The problem is its price.
An another possibility is to use an IDE ribbon which could be connected between the Kickstart switcher and the socket adapter.

The picture below shows how could looks the socket adapter.:)

To interested members: I would like to know if you're also interested with the PCB adpater with ribbon whichs allow to put the Kickstart switcher away from the socket of the mother board?
It' a useful solution for A600 and also for an A500 (or 2000) which are equiped with some other expansions (accelerator board, memory, etc).

Normaly, this version of Kickstart Switcher should also work fine with the GBA1000.:)

I'll order the components during this delay.

Actually, I'm working onto the A1000 Kickstart Switcher. 12 are almot ready.

I hope to begin to send them the next week-end!

I have put onto the PCB "Kickstart 1.3" for ROM1 and "Kickstart 2.0/3.1" for ROM2.
But, you can use the Kickstart Switcher like this:

- ROM1: KS1.3 or KS2.0X & ROM2: KS1.3 or KS2.0X or KS3.1

The only restriction is for KS3.1 which must be onto ROM2 with jumper JP1 closed.
But, it's not a problem, because the Kickstart switcher allows to choose onto which ROM (1 or 2) you want to boot by default by using JP3-1 (Priority Selector).

The jumper JP2 is used to select the reset time to swap between kickstarts (3 or 10 seconds).

Actually no. I've started some, but I wanted to sell before the A1000 switchers.
Also, since the adapter will be will a ribbon, That will be a long work to strip cables an solder all of them.
So, I have a simple idea. I'm going to put a 40 pins IDE connector onto the switcher and onto the PCB adapter which will be plugged into the ROM socket of the Amiga.
The two boards will be connected together with a 40 pins IDE ribbon.

Hello mate,

Any news about switchers? Please, keep us informed :)

Thanks

Some informations in pictures! ;)
The problem is that I have made PCB to be plugged directly into the socket of the Amiga motherboard.
I don't want to waste my time in ribbon soldering. So, I have decided to use two little PCB adapters instead of one.
One will be plugged onto the motherboard, the other one will be soldered under the Kickstart Switcher.
The 40 pins connector will be a standard IDE male connector or connector like the one which can be seen into the pictures.

Actually, it's like that, for the next batch, I'll see to modify the design to avoid the second little PCB.

Tuxbar81
15th September 2014, 12:39
As you know, initially, the Kickstart adapter has beeen designed to be plugged directly onto the ROM socket of the Amiga. The idea I have shown in the previous post is a solution to use a 40 wires ribbon to connect the Switcher to the Amiga. But, it's not a good solution for me because the Switcher with 2 x 40pin strips ans the little PCB adapter soldered under is bulky. In this case, we have one PCB for the Switcher and two other PCBs for the ribbon...

So, I have decided to make a new design to limit the cost and the volum of the Switcher. This one uses only two PCBs. The little ribbon PCB adapter and the Switcher PCB. I have replaced the 40pins socket by a 40 pin connector (HE10). I'll send the files to the factory this evening. I'm sorry for the delay, but I really prefer to make like that. The adapter will be finer... and it's better for our Amiga where there is not so much place available.
Components are already ordered. The PCB should be ready in three weeks (maximum).

The "standalone" Kickstart switcher which is plugged directly onto the ROM socket of the Amiga is always available. It's a perfect solution for A2000 with accelerator boards plugged into the processor expansion connector, or for A500 with external accelerator boards (GVP, ACA500,etc). So, if you are interested with this version, you can declare your interest, they are always available!

I hope you understand my approach.

Tuxbar81
16th September 2014, 22:02
Will look like that: :)

76006 76005

The Kickstart Switcher will be directly connected to the ribbon via the U4 40 pins connector.
The Reset signal will be pick up by the little PCB ribbon (new version) and bring to the switcher
via one unused pin of the 40 pins connector.

All right, cool :) I'll stick with my order.

As a means of using up your original switcher ie the one that plugs directly into the kickstart socket, you could change my request for the 2 plus the ribbon cables to just 2 of the old stand alone boards minus the ribbon cables / adapters.

These would still do what I want and the ribbon was just for flexibility and as you are making another updated version to accommodate the ribbon cable, I could maybe see about getting one of those in the future if I need one. ;)

I have updated the first post with pictures. You can see the Ribbon Kickstart Switcher version plugged onto an A500 motherboard's Kickstart socket.

You can also see the Stand alone version plugged onto an A500 motherboard's Kickstart socket.
Everything works perfect... but it's impossible to put the keyboard in place due to the profile of the pin header strip used to plugged the KS board.
I've search a low profile version without success.

So, finally:
- A2000, GBA1000 and A500 installed into a tower: Stand alone version. Price: 13.50€
- A500, A600, A2000 and GBA1000: Ribbon Version. Price: 21€

The clip will be used to pick up the RESET signal. Like that installation 100% solder free!:)
11 stand alone Kickstart Switchers waited for these clips. They will be finished tomorrow, tested after tomorrow.

The IDC 40 pins terminaison connectors are also arrived for the ribbon version. I work also onto this version.

Currently, 8 Stand Alone version are ready. I'm working now onto the Ribbon version.
I can send 4 Stand Alone Switchers to members who have expressed their interest.
The 4 others will be send later since the interested members want also the Ribbon Switcher version.

-----------------------------------------------

Here is a Ribbon Kickstart Switcher onto a A500! The ribbon is a little bit too long in my mind.
Reset signal is picked up from pin 18 of 68000 with mini clip... no need to solder.

78178 78179

The A500 is under KS1.3 -> Drive LED is red.
78177

The A500 is under KS3.1 -> Drive LED is green.
78176

When the drive is running, it's LED is yellow.

To obtain the red and green color onto the drive LED, it's simple... I have plated the LED of the switcher onto the LED of the floppy drive. No modification of the case needed!:)

What a great piece of hardware this really is, I am over the moon with it and will maybe get a ribbon version to go along with the Kipper2k's CF memory expansion that I have in the near future  In the meantime the other switcher is going into another 500 along with the 1MB chip memory upgrade that Zetro's thread shows how to do :)

Hey, my friend, you didn't read the previous post that I have sent today?:)

I have explained that I hadn't all parts needed to make the Ribbon version of the Kickstart Switcher. The PCB was one of them... and without PCB, no switcher.
So, I have started with the Stand alone which is the original design. If you look at the table, you'll see that only Stand alone version Switchers have been sent.

Now, I'm working onto the Ribbon version, and seven are ready. They will be tested this evening, and as I said into the previous post, members in the following list are going to receive a PM this evening about their Switcher(s).
- Monkeh (3RB)
- jcarvalho (1RB+1S.A)
- CrashMidnick (1RB+1S.A)
- merlinkv (2RB)

If you look well, you are in second place in the list as in the table for Ribbon version. You want also a Stand alone version which is ready and tested, but I didn't contact you because you want also the Ribbon version. I though that should be a good idea to send the two adapters in the same parcel to limit the shipping costs.:)

Cheers.

The video shows a very long reset time. Now, the Reset's time needed to swap the Kickstart is between 4 and 5 seconds.

I have just take a look onto the adapter board used to move away the RAM/CF board from the keyboard. I don't own one...
This adapter seems to be very near of the Rom socket of the Amiga.
You can look below at the picture of the board from the website of Kipper2k:

Before to send the first Ribbon Switchers, I have finished to repair my A600HD and I have made some tests with the Switcher.
First of all, the mini clip used to pick up the Reset signal is to big to be usable onto this version of Amiga. All ICs are smd components.
These clips are sold as smd compatible.

Nevertheless, there is a solution. Onto the A600, the 68000 is a smd IC and the Reset signal is not onto the same pin as the DIL version.
Pin 20 for the A600 and 18 onto A500 & A2000.

Under the 68000, on the bottom layer, there is a vias which is connected to the pin 20.
The solution is to solder a little wire into this vias and to connect the clip at the other end of the wire.

Pictures below:

79363 79364

While the KS1.3 to KS3.1 are runing perfectly onto A500 & A2000 with the Kickstart Switcher, I haven't managed to run KS1.3.
Only KS2 to KS3.1 are runing fine. No HD into the A600. KS1.3 is an original Commodore ROM.
It's strange, or perhaps not so much. After a control onto A600 & A500 schematics (from amigawiki.de), the only difference is for /OE & /CS signals.
For A500, /OE corresponds to /ROMEN and /CS is to GND.
For A600, /OE corresponds to /OE and /CS to ROMEN...

Need to make some controls & to make a mod to see if the problem can be resolved.

Please, if you want the Switcher to use into an A600, keep in mind that it's actually usable with KS from 2.X to 3.1.

djos
19th November 2014, 22:41
I'd suggest that the patched ks1.3 Rom would prolly work fine on a600's with your switcher.

Pm me tuxbar if you'd like more info.

Tuxbar81
20th November 2014, 08:32
I have tested two differents 1.3 original ROMs directly plugged onto the socket of the A600, and the problem is the same.
I have found some forums where people had the same defect, and some others who had no problem to run under KS1.3.
I think it's clearly a problem of the ROM, and I'll need to burn an eprom to see it's the problem disappears.

Conclusion, it's not a problem of the Switcher since the A600 doesn't boot with the KS1.3. I have found some people onto forum who have their A600 which runs fine with KS1.3, but I don't know if it's orginal or burned Rom.

I have tested them before to send. They work fine.

What is the model of your Amiga?

Sorry for the following silly questions:
Did you put the little clip onto the Pin 18 of the 68000 (and not and another?)
The clip must not touch an another pin of the 68000.
Have you put the kickstart Switcher in the right direction?

I'm not waiting for feedback. I don't make the Kickstart Switcher for having good feedback.
If I have made this KS, it's firstly for me, and it's working onto my A500, A2000 and A600...
And after I have decided to allow to other Amiga fans.

You are not happy with your Kickstart switcher, NO PROBLEM. I take them back.
Send them back to me, and I'll refound your money after I'll receive them.

It's a little bit long, I'm really sorry. I'll be able to work more onto them during the X-mas holidays!

Wow! It's a good news for you! I'm really happy, but I have to check much better my PCBs.
I'm really sorry for the inconvenience. Onto which component did you add solder?
Please, keep me informed of the outcome.

Hi! in ribbon version, I have added a little bit of solder in one component and now it is working. Will inspect the other this weekend. I bet that the package had a hard voyage.

PM sent to jcarvalho just now to ask him to return back the switchers.

I have sent them in functional condition, I hope to receive them like that.
A complete test is always made before sending them. (Time selector and priority bootrom)

You're added in the table. As for all interested members, you'll received a PM as soon as the switchers will be ready.

Actually, I'm working onto 17 Switchers which are almost ready.

Yes, but sorry, I was really too busy these last times. But if you had taken a look at the table, you should see that I have updated you line (2 Switchers instead of one)
It's normal if I didn't ask for you postal address and also if I didn't give you my Paypal.
In fact, you are into the second table for the second batch. Only members who have asked for the Stand Alone version of this table have received their Switcher.
I had received all components for this version, and I had made them before.

Actually, I'm working onto 20 Ribbon switchers. These Switchers are for members from veper to EgillSkallagrimsson into of the first table.
That should be great if I was able to finish them during this week. :)
Voilà!

Regards,
Franck.

I have received payment from veper and scoobyatgb.
A precision is needed. The amount that must be paid is the addition of the price of your order and the price of the shipping. This the amount that I have to receive.

IF YOU MAKE PAYMENT WITH PAYPAL, (no gift option), YOU PAY THE FEES.

I don't count the price of the parcel, and the amount of the switcher low. I'm not going to pay also the fees...

djos
18th March 2015, 07:52
Hi Tux, last time i checked, the gift option meant the recipient of the funds didn't pay any fees.

Hi Tux, last time i checked, the gift option meant the recipient of the funds didn't pay any fees.

Yes, with gift option, there are no fees. But if you pay for goods, fees must be paid. For the last payment thatsais I have received, the buyer has let me to pay the fees. This amount is about 5€!... Almost half of the shipping cost !

As I said, the switcher is cheap. I don't want to apply higher price, but I don't want to loose money.

djos
18th March 2015, 09:07
Ouch, I've had that happen before and just got them to send me the rest via gift before shipping the item.

The other option is send folks a PayPal invoice with shipping and fees clearly listed.

The great thing about PayPal invoices is the customer either pays it in full or doesn't pay at all, there's no wiggle room.
