View Full Version : Picasso Graphic PCB for A500 - A2000 - A4000 - GBA1000. 1st Batch

Hi All,

Perhaps have you allready seen the threads about the expansions PCB production for the GBA1000 (PICASSO, 68060 accelerator & Mini-Thylacine).
Since I have launch the first batch I had the idea to make a version of the PICASSO graphic board for my A2000 & A4000. :)
Today, I have looked a little bit for new items onto the other bay, and it was a nude Picasso PCB for A500, A 2000 & A4000 for sale!
So, a such version is allready designed! I have searched a little, and I have found a thread onto A1k.org about this new version.:woot:

Here is the link (sorry in German...):
http://www.a1k.org/forum/showthread.php?t=40955

You can take a look at this page in english with pictures taken by Matthias Heinrichs aka Matze and originally posted into his own thread at a1k.org:
http://retrocu.blogspot.fr/2014/09/second-amiga-zorro-card-project.html

Finally, I have decided to launch a batch of PCB production for this new version of the Picasso graphic board.
If you are interested, please, send a post here!

Here is a screenshot of the last version of the Picasso PCB (rev26):

79520
Main PCB of Picasso graphic board.
4 layers
Dim: 129,52 x 100 mm

Price: 9.65€ without entrance taxes.

79523
VGA PCB board
2 layers
Dim: 82,53 x 19,99 mm

Price: 2.14€ without entrance taxes

To build your Picasso graphic board, you'll need the components list and the JED file for the CPLD IC.
You can download the needed files here:

A500-Graka-2.6.zip (http://www.amibay.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=82100&d=1421846702)

Into the components list, you'll have to change the value of R32 to avoid ghost stripes onto the screen.
The good value of R32 is: 0 Ohm.

For the 30 Picasso board ordered, I'll pay 289.41€ for the main PCB and 64.14€ for the VGA PCB for 30 units for each.

Build a complete board means that I need to order all components.
I have ordered all chips for the GBA1000 expansions and it was a big job... and it's not finished. I'm waiting for the PCBs that I'm going to send each board with components.
Well, I'll see. It should be possible.

HI guys
Just seen this tread and would love a complete card what sort of cost are these and is it possible to buy one like this. If not how hard is it to get the GPU chip these days?

Just answered the question about the GPU Cirrus Logic Chip seen a few on line

Many thanks

Hi, I'm the guy who made this PCB. I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I should suggest to wait a bit. This layout still has some minor flaws, the optimized one can be obtained from me for free, but this whole thing is still in beta phase. So far only two PCBs are made and only two rare GBAs and my A500 are tested. I'm launching a beta phase just before Christmas.

You will need a small VGA adapter for interfacing this PCB on a regular Amiga. Again: ask me.

Third and last, the VGA-Chip is VERY hard to solder! You can bend the pins by blowing at them! I'll offer ready soldered expansion boards with warranty soon! The price will be below 200Euro.

Best regards

Matthias Heinrichs aka Matze

Hi Matthias,

Thanks a lot for your message, and mostly thanks a lot for your great work!

Just a precision to be clear, I have opened this thread to produce the PCBs to obtain the lowest price possible for all interested members (and me!).
Like for the GBA1000 expansions (parcel is arrived at TOULOUSE in France this night... not sure I'll have today, and tomorrow is a public holiday.),
I don't make that to make money, I will make no profit.

You will need a small VGA adapter for interfacing this PCB on a regular Amiga. Again: ask me.

I suppose this is the little PCB included into the archive? If yes, I didn't speak about it into the thread since it's a very little PCB.

Third and last, the VGA-Chip is VERY hard to solder! You can bend the pins by blowing at them! I'll offer ready soldered expansion boards with warranty soon! The price will be below 200Euro.

I have actually more than 20 GPU at home for the GBA1000 Picasso! Indeed, the pins are breakable. Thank you for the information. If there are members interested, they can contact you.
Me, I'd really like to assemble by myself. I have already assemble my GBA1000 and I have soldered ICs with same pitch like Xilinx chips.
I hope to begin this week the GBA expansions (if PCBs will be delivered!)

Best regards

Matthias Heinrichs aka Matze

I hope I will not annoy you if I contact you. I like very much a1k.org, but this great site has a very big default... It's in German... and it's a real barrier for the International Amiga fans!
The German scene has really been always active for the Amiga, and the a1k.org is the proof!

Best regards,
Franck.

Normally yes. I have downloaded the rev25.
I have seen that you also have a project of case for the A500. Very good idea!

There is also the little VGA PCB. I don't know the price for this one. Informations soon.

Please confirm if the price is suitable for you.

The Picasso graphic board is made with two PCBs.
The main board is a 4 Layers PCB and I have paid 9.647€/unit.
The Daughter board (VGA PCB) is a 2 layers PCB, and I have paid 2.138€/unit.

Finally for the two PCc, I have paid 11.785€. And this is the price that everyone will pay for one Picasso graphic board.
You'll have to add the entrance taxes I'll pay when I'll receive the PCBs, and the shipping costs to receive them to your home.

There is no dumb question! Yes it's a graphic board and you can use it into an Amiga 4000.

As I told: Personally I do not recomend buying the PCBs now, because it is PRE PRODUCTION-Phase. Im evaluating this board design and a friend of mine and I will offer this project via the www.kryoflux.com (http://www.kryoflux.com/) - webshop ready assembled with warranty and everything! The problem is: The VGA-chip has a tqfp 208-packing! Even people with very high solder-skills are likely to ruin this chip. I ruined 20% by myself during betatesting! You bend the pins by blowing at them! If you bend them back, you have a high chance, that they simply fall of!
I'm fan of the DIY-idea, but in this case I see a lot of people who buy parts/pcbs for about 100$ and ruin their parts. I work hard to promisse new graphic-boards for ZorroII/Expansion-Port in 2015! Of course catastropys may happen, but its my heart desire to make this Graphic-Card happen!

So for all who cant wait: go on
For all others: A better sollution will be there, and if it is too expensive for you, you can still organize a new batch of PCBs.

One final remark: This is a Graphic Card for Zorro-Amigas and the A500. It will not fit natively in a GBAA1000! You will need a UNTESTED 90°-adapter to make this board fit in the GBA1000.

Best regards

Matthias

Sounds like you are trying to solder them with unsuitable method. Have you tried using a soldering iron?

There is no dumb question! Yes it's a graphic board and you can use it into an Amiga 4000.
Personally, I'm going to put one onto an A500, an into an A2000, and the last one into my A4000! :)

for the GBA1000 expansions, we have paid 5.38€ for the GPU (20 GPU ordered), 2.03€ for one memry IC (4 needed) and around 9€ for the Xilink.
The last time I have ordered GPU, I have paid 10€ but for only 5 units.

That is strange, because digikey is a US company. Some parts like the edge connector and video switches have a lead-time, so you need to wait some time. The edge connector is only needed for usage in the A500 and has a minimum order-quantity of 10! So group up guys!

I have just updated the first table of the first post where you'll find the amount you have to pay for each of you.

The total amount includes:
- the price of the PCBs (when you didn't paid them),
- the price of the components (when you didn't paid them),
- the entrance taxes for PCBs & components that I have paid when I've reveived the items,
- the shipping costs (tacked or registered)

Ordyne, there is 5.60€ added to your amount for the 86 pins connector needed for your Mini-Thylacine.

Cryton, your parcel should be ready this week. I need to finish something for you! :-)

Since there is two shipment options, you have to choice the one you want for your package.

The total amount you have to pay is in column "Total amount with tracked" or "Total amount with register".

You'll receive this evening a PM with my Paypal. Please, payment as Gift or you cover the fees.

I'm really glad to hear that you have received your parcel!
As said gseb(thanks a lot my friend), you need the file shared by Matthias into the post #107.
You'll find into this zip file all you need for the assembling your Picasso board.

For the CPLD, you'll need to program it with the JTAG connector of the PCB.

Also as mentioned by gseb, the value of R32 must be null (0 Ohm) to avoid ghost stripes onto the screen.

To simplify, I have added the link of the zip file into the first post of this thread.

Carlo, have fun with your new great expansion! :-)

It's a pleasure for me to help the people who have the passion of the Amiga!

I'm very happy to hear that you have received your PCBs!
You have now to play with your soldering station!

Soldering station will have to wait a bit yet, as I have yet to order all parts.

Speaking of that, I went through the parts list and two parts is out of stock, and the third there are three parts shows up when entering part number.

One of them is the edge connector, so that is ok.

I would like to have help to identify the correct part (http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en?KeyWords=P100ACT-ND&WT.z_header=search_go)

I think it's this one (http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/ERJ-6GEYJ101V/P100ACT-ND/21875), but am not sure.

Edit: Added positive feedback for the great job done.

Got my parts, and I've fired up the solder station.

I do have a few questions, and feel like an idiot for asking them.

I finished mostly with the small stuff, but has little bit left on the first PCB board.

First is IC8. I can't figure out where pin 1 is on the PCB, and wasn't any wiser when looking at the diagram. The pictures I have found
where IC8, looks to be IC13 isn't sharp enough to see what way it is soldered on.

According to part list, there should be 6 RMCF0805JT1R00CT-ND 1Ohm resistors, but in partlist I only find 3(RR38, 40 and 42).

Also part RMCF0805JT75R0CT-ND 75Ohm resistor should have 7, but I can only find 5(R26,27,39,41 and 43)

Here is a list where I have been trying to marry the BOM list with partlist:

Thanks Tuxbar81.

As for the resistors, I had a light bulb moment that these might be the ones that should go on the smaller vga connector board.

At least what I have seen there is no place where the resistor type is specified for this board .

I want an internal complete full build rtg card (from Matze) that will fit internally in my a500. I don't know how to use the kit and build it myself....who do I need to ask to have the entire thing build for me and how much would it cost for the card and for building the card all together?

Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry, but there is no PCB available anymore.

Actually, warr8or29 & AndreasR didn't pay their PCBs. I have no news from them.:(

@viserys23: I don't forget you, but I was not able to spend time on these projects these last times. I'll take a look this evening.

Is there Parts location layout of the Board because of the board masking some part locations are difficult to determine especially between IC8 and IC210. This is also true for the GRAKA33 and Thycline Boards.

You don't use Eagle?

In the first post, there is a linked file named "A500-Graka-2.6.zip (http://www.amibay.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=82100&d=1421846702)". In this ".zip" file, you will find a ".brd" file.
You just have to open it with the program "eagle" from CadSoft. The ". brd" is the PCB layout schematic. Within eagle, you can easily find the part locations you are looking. It's the same for GRAKA33, all the files can be downloaded from Georg Braun Homepage under the "Projekt" section.

Has anyone else tried with the Latest Eagle 7.4 64Bit version, it appears that not all part
numbers are visible.

I'm using Eagle 7.2 under Linux and everthing works fine.
Anyway, you'll find a PDF file with the components location of the Picasso-V26 board here:

Sorry, actually, no more PCBs availables.

Two members (warr8or29 & AndreasR) who had declared their interest have never paid their PCBs.
We can consider that they aren't interested anymore... So, two Picasso PCBs (mainboard+vga board) are available.
Only PCBs are available. No components.

If you are interested, please take a look at the first table of the first post, and send me a PM.

Thanks for reading.
Franck.

Since the thing is now available at KyroFlux http://webstore.kryoflux.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=25&osCsid=414712c14901106f1e8c92cfa15c06a3, I was wondering, is this worth considering for my Zorro3 A3000 in which I'm now using a Cybervision64 or would this card be a "downgrade"?

I would say it would be a downgrade.
