As the title says. Anything that can fit inside the case and read disks will do, doesn't have to be a commodore unit. No crazy prices.

Yeah excuse me while I go and buy a bunch of tools, then learn how to use them by practicing on some stuff I'm trying to buy in the first place.

I'm sure cosmic was only trying to help, let's keep things civil please folks. :-)

The Amiga 500's internal floppy drive is a Chinon FB-354, they're not particularly rare, indeed I think Jon Hare on here had a few New-Old-Stock ones, you could send him a PM and ask if he still has any.

The Chinon FB-354 is the same drive used in the Amiga 2000 and 3000 (just with a different fascia / LED) -- you can modify these drives relatively painlessly.

I don't know if an A600/A1200 drive will physically fit, although there's no technical reason why it won't work. These models use the slimmer (25mm) Chinon FZ-354 drives. You might find you can get away with one of those, although you may need a few mounting nuts to shunt it into the right place within the A500. If you want one of those, there's one on the Other Bay at the moment: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330441592913

"amiga floppy drive" on ebay brings up bugger all of any use it seems. Still, its good to know they're out there, even if not good for my wallet.

Aye, sometimes you have to be a bit more-flexible with your eBay search terms. I missed the above one because the seller misspelled Chinon as 'Chinnon'

@Hell_Labs: Those are about your best bet to be honest. If you're not up for modding a PC drive, why not ask nicely on here if someone would mod one for you? You might get lucky. ;-)

There's also a fair chance of getting a PC floppy drive that works with an Amiga without any hardware mods (Just a few jumper twiddles) -- Have a look here: http://www.freewebs.com/computolio/amiga_floppy_compatibility.html

Put his post back please? I'm curious.

I've made a discovery! The generic drive in this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290442857160&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Works perfectly if you remove it and plug it into the 500. It doesn't fit inside though, so you have to lead the ribbon out the back and sit it on top.

I'm not convinced it'd be appropriate to restore a moderated comment. You'll just have to imagine what was said. ;-)

I'm glad you've tracked down a suitable drive! If it's not quite a perfect fit, it's probably worth your while keeping an eye out for a Chinon. Patience is the most important skill in getting things off eBay for cheap.
