Autoboots using A600's KS-ROM with driver for A600's ide interface (40.063/37.350/37.300)

User needs to connect two (3 in 'cfidecp') signals to Amiga mainboard. A ground wire alongside with signal wires is recommended if the signal wires are not short and following ground trace on amiga pcb to reduce EMI caused by loop inductance.

No RAM in ide-board, so this board alone doesn't fully enable for example the Whdload floppy to hard disk installer 'retro gaming' utility.

Different fuse options in v402 boards: CF cards use at most 100 mA, but cf-size Microdrive HDDs probably use more, so 200 mA resettable fuse may not be an option. 500mA resettable fuse should work, or the 2A block fuse/short circuit block. Also two CF cards on adapter at the same time may be a little questionable with 200mA fusing. later V4xx boards may have 3.3v regulator with current limit -Pin 20 power will have same voltage as CPLD!

Does the IDE adaptor work on A2000 with accelerators? Does the clockport interface work? What's the maximum length of the IDE cable that could be used?

@mkl

Does the IDE adaptor work on A2000 with accelerators? Does the clockport interface work? What's the maximum length of the IDE cable that could be used?

Answer for all three questions: Unknown.
Long cable length might bring signal integrity issues, normal IDE-cable is probably ok (about 40 cm). Termination of critical signals and using 80-conductor cables should make long cables work better.
Clockport is not tested by me, I should get some clockport devices to test with.
If A2000 accelerators (in 86-pin slot?) work, I don't know.

Hi,

I have a A500, with A501 memory expansion, and I have some questions about the IDE68K:

Works this IDE68K with 2 devices (HD and CD-ROM, for example)? Can I use the 68010 with the IDE68K? What is the maximum capacity for HDD and partitions?

Could you send a eprom with a kickstart updated for auto-booting?

Thanks

ad Gavilan: 22 euros total.

Vsargiani: cd-rom is uncertain. I haven't tried cd-rom myself, but a french user reported problem with cd-rom with v295. Earlier, a V100 was confirmed to work with cd-rom.
More:
HDD partitions and size should be as with Amiga model 600. For autoboot you can use
for example the KS-ROM 3.1 V40.063, which is compatible with A500, 600 and 2000.

I'm closing this sale at least for some weeks. I'll complete the remaining ide boards later for sale.

Is it possible to use a usb mouse like deathadder or mx revolution wireless with any hardware patch?
Only older optical mice do work.
Also there's limitation using the mouse input when dragging and clicking at the same time, doing fast moving tasks "lags/ignores" the input.
Other than that it's a great working adaptor.

Hi

Can the mouse adapter work with an Atari ST as well?

Hi. By changing "solder blob" jumpers on V2.1 PCB, it will.
But the D9 connector may be a problem, same as with A600: it might not fit in the mouse hole in some models of the Atari ST.

Hi there,

mouse adapters arrived and work very well. Quite impressed. Smooth movement, no lag - very nice indeed.

Just a quick question though, is it possible to get teh mouse wheel working? Using Free Wheel I have managed to get the third mouse button working (third mouse button is activated by pressing the mouse wheel in), but no matter what I do I cannot seem to get the mouse wheel to scroll.

Is it possible? If so, please tell me/us which software to use.

Thanks again.

Hi there,
Just a quick question though, is it possible to get teh mouse wheel working?

Hi. To get mouse wheel working requires some signals connected to the second joystick port from the PIC microcontroller pins. (soldering is needed, because this printed circuit board does not have a connector for these signals)
Original PS2M mouse adapter project documentation can be found at http://aminet.net

Any change to make the CF adaptor vertical to solve the problem on A1000?

Practically no chance because the cf connector pins will probably break if trying to bend 90 degreer.
Straight pin hea.der for cf can't be used either because of the smd pad pattern in v296

So, only doing a small re-design on the v296?

I know you'll get too many versions, but I think the A1000 based systems can justify the making of a batch. Maybe we need a interest thread in the same shape as Tomthul made about the A1000 internal RAM.

Maybe so.
I don't know how much space there is 'behind' the CPU in that area in A1000.

mkl

Some cfide68k v296 boards will be completed soon. A couple are assembled but not yet tested.

This board might not fit in every (edit: 'any' corrected to 'every') 68000 Amiga:
a) REV 5 A500 mainboard requires "riser" socket for the adapter to clear the KS-ROM. Also the three 3-pin emi filter components behind the CPU can conflict with the CF-connector
b) Some Amiga 2000 mainboards require riser to clear the PLCC chip behind the CPU
c) Adapter with CF-connector will not clear the floppy drive in A1000.
d) other cases which may exist

I can include free DIP-64 sockets (risers) in the shipment with the adapters.

Please consider these options:

With or without CF-connector? (Get 5 euros discount without)

Type of IDE-connector. A) "Boxed" header or pin header without guiding walls. It can improve changes of being able to put something in the clockport header when the IDE-header doesn't have walls. (The clockport header is a little bit too close to IDE connector.) B) straight or right-angle IDE connector? A SIP pull-up resistor network (4.7kohm) for the other half of IDE data bus will be soldered when straight header is used.

CFIDE68K V296
Information about these home made IDE interfaces (I'll take photos for V296 later)
Summary: Plugs to 68K socket, one "40-pin" IDE connector and one compactflash connector. Autoboots using A600's KS-ROM with driver for A600's ide interface (40.063/37.350/37.300) User needs to connect two wires to Amiga mainboard. Note: should fit in stock REV6 mainboard A500, REV5 need riser socket to clear ksrom and other components.

Price for the board is 65 euros. Shipping 7 euros worldwide registered mail.
It has the CF-connector, so it will not fit inside A1000, or A500 with Indivision display adapter
Also some boards without the CF-connector installed, price 60 + shipping.
Optional 68HC000 DIP-64 CPU for +5 euros.

Was a 2.05 KS ROM released for the A500, or is it safe to use an A600 2.05 KS ROM in a A500?

I suppose the safest route is to just get a 3.1 Kickstart.

Would this device conflict with any Kickstart ROM switchers in an A500?

What would happen if I tried booting an A500 with a stock KS 1.3 and one of these devices installed? Would the system just ignore it, or throw errors at boot?

No

is it safe to use an A600 2.05 KS ROM in a A500?
Safe.

I suppose the safest route is to just get a 3.1 Kickstart.
Or make your own including KS1.3+IDE & switcher using nothing more than a 27C800 EPROM three wires + a switch.

Would this device conflict with any Kickstart ROM switchers in an A500?
Nope.

What would happen if I tried booting an A500 with a stock KS 1.3 and one of these devices installed?
Nothing. You'd just get the normal hand asking you to insert a floppy disk.

craggus2000
14th October 2010, 07:12
Yes, yes it would.

Would I need anything extra to enable the booting of workbench from the ide device (apart from the workbench disks to install it of course).

What would happen if I tried booting an A500 with a stock KS 1.3 and one of these devices installed? Would the system just ignore it, or throw errors at boot?

Would WB1.3 see the ide device (hdd/cf) after booting it from floppy?

Is there anywhere that sells KS1.3+IDE pre made chips? Anyone here willing to do one for me? My knowledge of programming chips is very lacking...

alexh

A stock WB1.3 floppy disk? Nope.

If you put the appropriate scsi.device on the floppy disk and added the correct binddrivers command to your startup script & set mountlists correctly. Then maybe.

Is there anywhere that sells KS1.3+IDE pre made chips?
Nope, that would be illegal. If you made your own FILE then you could use one of the EPROM sellers who will pre-program them for you.

Actually, there is a way to boot from 1.3 using the SCSI.device from 2.05 (or even 3.1, for that matter).

Search on Aminet for "grab SCSI", it is a little program that catch the SCSI.device from the 2.x/3.1 ROM and save it to a file.

Now all you have to do is save the file on a OFS disk and binddrive the archive on a boot floppy for 1.3. Remember you need to create a mountlist for each partition you want available for 1.3!:)

mkl
1st November 2010, 20:55
The cpld's have been programmed in-system, after soldering.
A vqfp-64 ZIF socket for programming before soldering the ic, if such exists, would probably be so expensive that it will be cheaper to get a download (programming) cable and connect it to the 6 pin header on ide68k pcb.

I'm also in the market for a CF adaptor for the a600. I have a suggestion for a minor change in the desing. It owuld be great if the cf would be accessible from without opening the case. Turning the cf 45 degrees would make that possible. You could use the holes in the pcmcia port to mount the card.

This is the solution i would like. Opening all the time the plastic chassis eats

your time and destroys also the poor AMIGA. Maybe with a small cut on the

top of the PCMCIA this might be possible.

OR

If you connect a 60cm 44pin cable and place all round below the keyboard to reach the trapdoor.

With this option you do not have to cut the chassis or worry for mistakes.

The old version of the IDE Adapter without CF-Slot does not work together with the Hurricane, and in the case isn´t enough space for both. The only accelerator that i got to work with the IDE Adaptor was a Apollo520.

In may. I've connected to the board with jtag, I could erase the cpld, but i have no code to program it. Needs adaptation from previous abel source code, I'm going to use one master abel source file with optional bits for each ide68k version.

+5V supply on the 40-pin connector might eliminate need to externally connect power to a IDE-CF adapter connected to it. Or IDE-SD, IDE-SATA, which might work with ide68k(?).

So we will have to power the adapter (i mean cf adapter connected to the IDE) from the floppy connector of the mainboard.

Right ?

No, it's the other way. If your cf-adapter supports taking power from that key pin position, it will get it through the 40-pin connector of v401. Are you thinking of an cf adapter with male (to cable) or female (to board) ide connector? The latter type might be more likely to be able to take power directly from 40-pin connector .

---------- Post added at 12:48 ---------- Previous post was at 12:37 ----------

Previous ide68k had 39-pin connectors where polarisation key pin was removed to allow 80-wire or other key pin polarised ide cables.

I guess if you get an v40.063 (512KByte) or V37.350 KS-ROM it should work.

EDIT: 37.350 and other KS2.05 and 2.04 are 512 KBytes in size, not 256 KBytes? Also corrected KS3.1 V40.063 to 512 KBytes, not 512MB.

Could the A500 IDE board actually be fitted on top of an internal accelerator board?

I got a Hurricane 500 board installed.

mkl
25th May 2011, 17:05
Hi.
I haven't got much idea how these ide boards will fit or even work with accelerator boards. In cases where the dip-64 signals are wired directly from accelerator's bottom pins to top socket, it shouldn't matter if the ide board is placed at the bottom or the top side socket.

About v401 ide: I've exported the cpld pin list from the pcb software and will convert it for the cpld design software. When i'll get the cpld code to process to a jed file, it can be downloaded to the v401 board assembled earlier.

---------- Post added at 16:05 ---------- Previous post was at 15:58 ----------

About v296: i've got one with broken copper tracks replaced with soldered wires now. It needs testing, and then fixing the thin wires in place with epoxy (or hot) glue.
There's an uncounted number of old incompleted v295 and v296 boards.

Angled cf adapter: parts for 20 boards, and some older boards that are not yet necessarily working.

Nikolaj_sofus
25th May 2011, 17:24
I guess if you place it top side of the socket, you might have to put a wire to power it, since i guess when you enable the board, you take power from the cpu

Price for one pce: 40 euros, registered mail 7 euros. I've also got one completed angled ide to cf adapter (20 euros) and to ps/2 mouse adapters (10 euros/1pce)

Please tell what kind of 40-pin connector you want: right-angle or straight, "boxed"("walled") or "plain" pin header. NOTE: The 40-pin connector is very close to the CPU, so though a straight ide connector can be placed on the pcb, the space is limited so that a 68000 CPU can be placed on the board, but nothing wider, such as 'riser' socket or some other adapter or memory board, but with a right angle connector such things might fit.

The 2-pin header next to IDE has the /ovr and /int2 signals. These will signals be duplicated on other cpld pins, and pads on pcb.
The signals can be connected to pads on mainboard next to the 86-pin edge connector, but they can be found on other places which may vary by version of A500 mainboard.

I've been busy, no v401 assembled yet.

---------- Post added at 19:56 ---------- Previous post was at 19:54 ----------

Next to 2-pin header there's an smd led.
When led output signal is "duplicated" on other cpld pins it will be without a series resistor, which is therefore needed externally.

Hi. V401 has one 40-pin ide connector, it can be used with IDE to CF adapter.
I don't have an Amiga 1000, but I looked at these photos,
http://www.amiga-hardware.com/download_photos/a1000mbrev6.jpg http://www.amiga-hardware.com/download_photos/a1000mbreva.jpg
and I'm in little doubt  if that metal shield piece could come in contact with the board. It's difficult to tell from photos.
Taking data from the PCB cad program I used,
the v401 board extends 0.325 inches (9 mm) to this direction measuring from the pins of the CPU (or centers of the PCB pads/drills for these pins) and the plastic edge of 40-pin connector a few mm more. The right angle pin-header a little bit more, but these pins could be bent "upward" to clear that metal shield.

Tom Thul's RAM and IDE board seems to work with V401 board.
The board I received from Tom is a version that plugs to the side slot, with 2 MB SRAM chip and 44-pin 2.0mm female ide-connector and ide-cf adapter. The IDE-part seems to be at base-address F20000, so it doesn't conflict with ide68k, which emulates A600's ide at base address DA0000. RAM is configured by the program "AutoAddRAM" that reads configuration from file MemoryList.AAR, memory is added from 400000 to 5FFFF8.

Sounds promising that the cpu ram expansion with be compatible as well.

The best of two worlds: a fully autoconfig IDE (Mika's IDE68k) and awesome Tom's 2/4Mb RAM plus a secondary IDE for removable devices!

No more need for IDEFix97 (you can use it, BTW, but it is not necessary at all!) and a pair of external CF on the same machine with a real HD (or a single CF) hooked to Mika's IDE68k for autoboot!

Power A1000/500/2000!!!!!!!!!!!! Go go go!

Jomor58, did you receive my PM reply? After I press "submit" button in PM form, the message doesn't appear in sent mail folder.
Your Amiga screen remains black with the adapter. You can check these things: bent cpu pins, adapter or cpu wrong way round in socket, all visibly ok, /int2 and /ovr wired to right places?
I can send a replacement board in priority letter post. I want the old one back but there's no hurry.

Hi. I haven't made adapters with fast mem.
You may want to take a look at the fs thread for boards with memory from Tom Thul.

Yes.
Or maybe not because of total width with the connector. Or fits with some pressure.

I installed my ide68k a couple of days ago and have finally got to test it :-)
Once I had got kickstart 37.300 installed it autodetected my ide to compact flash drive.
Even with the oldest kickstart with hard disk support and drive size limits I have managed to get 2x500mb drives installed and working.
The v401 adapter is amazing.
All I need now is a 4mb cpu expansion from tom :-)
I will be posting pictures etc of my a500 project soon.

V401 with straight pin header (connector without walls) should probably fit in A1000. (price 40 euros)

I'm not sure if there are any ps/2 mouse adapters left.

I have parts for about 20 angled ide-cf adapters (20 euros assembled or 100 euros for parts kit for 10 adapters)

Registered mail shipping (max 250 grams) 7 euros.
Priority and economy letter post with max. 3 cm package height, without tracking code, are cheaper services.

Hi. See http://iki.fi/mkl/ps2mhiiri627
In v2.1 pcb, you can cross switch these signals by altering solder blob bridges.

I have some pcbs for mouse adapters specifically for Atari ST, where these signals are wired for ST. Maybe a few dozen will be for sale when I get them assembled.

chiark
28th September 2011, 10:59
What are you trying to do, TJ?

If you've got a 40 pin to CF adapter, that needs a 3.5" floppy power input: that your floppy power cable and add a splitter :)

If you're going 40 to 44 pin, that too needs power: take that similarly from the floppy power cable.

mkl
28th September 2011, 18:03
40-pin ide-cf adapters may have +5v input at the 40-pin connector. In that case no other power connection is needed. v401 supplies +5v through the 40-pin header.

See http://iki.fi/mkl/ide/i68k.html for version and wiring info.

Floppy LED should a) either be detached from mainboard circuit if used for ide led instead or b)the floppy led driver circuit needs to be studied from schematic in order to use it both as floppy and ide led. I think the plus end of led is driven, and -end was connected to ground in a500(?).

I know on the ICD AdIDE you add one wire to motherboard and you can share the floppy and HD access to the floppy LED.

I am pleased to say... *clears throat*

This works with a Computer Systems Associates Mega Midget Racer (CSA-MMR) 030 accelerator + 8MB 32 bit FAST RAM + FPU.

Slight issue is that the keyboard will no longer fit because of the height of the assembly in an A500, but my Cunning Plan is to put this in a 1000.

Pics to follow.

To TjLazer: Some IDE-CF adapters have a jumper which selects power supply between through the 40-pin header and through the 4-pin floppy power connector. Also I'm planning to build some right angle 40-pin female to CF-slot adapters. (The square adapter pcb's picture was earlier somewhere in this thread)

I need a IDE68K, best with memory expansion, for my CDTV, too!

IDE68k should work in CDTV with the right KSROM.
I've only tested these V402 boards on an open A500 mainboard.

Front post for this for sale thread is now more up to date.

The ide-connector is a 40-pin header, I've used what I think is called a boxed, walled or shrouded polarised connector. Optionally, a plain pin-header strip can be soldered, but wrong insertion can lead to something like burnt cf-card. +5V supply is connected to certain one of these 40 pins.

The four pins for led,int2 and ovr can be a problem  :
Keyboard in A500 can come too close when case is being closed.
The holes on the pcb are too small to accept "normal" 0.025" square pin header pins, special pins with narrowed solder tails need to be used.
Therefore I'm willing to offer the adapter without pins soldered there,
wires soldered instead of pins,
or with right angle 5-pin header at the other end of the pcb.

I have a lot of new 40-pin ide-cables I can send one for free with the adapter.
I have about a dozen of new-old-stock 64 megabyte CF-cards.
And some used 68HC000 DIP CPU:s, price +5 euros with ide68k.
