Hi Buddy could you create a backplate for the commodore gaming pc. Project details and autocad dimensions here:
http://www.amibay.com/showthread.php?9670-Amiga-A1200-Tower-Project

Rakeim132
4th May 2015, 23:46
Hi. Fantastic idea from limboy777 (http://www.amibay.com/member.php?5591-limboy777): the dimensions of the Commodore gaming PC backplate is 43 x 19.6 cm... That would just require and increase of the width by 1.96 cm from your design, shifted on the opposite side of the motherboard. A very simple change in fact.

If you could make it this size (black painted), I'd buy one immediately for the Commodore gaming case I have and that is still sitting in its box... Shipment would be to France.

MasterGR
5th May 2015, 00:06
Yes i do.. no problem

But must create at least 3 pieces! :( (is not by me)

must prepaid and 4 working days to create..

same plate (my) but 43cmx19.6cm (the hole for pci cards i think is same)

Rakeim132
5th May 2015, 02:26
No problem. I'm prepared to buy 2 if you don't find volunteer.

I trust limboy777 (http://www.amibay.com/member.php?5591-limboy777) will buy the other one to make 3. :D

- - - Updated - - -

Another question : is the motherboard high enough so we can use a 90 degree PCMCIA elbow to use PCMCIA with an extension ?

rootboy

I'm just declaring interest for 1 Commodore Gaming backplate (430 mm x 196 mm), but if we can't get 3 people interested in them I'll take 2 to make the number. ;)

Hi guys

Thanks to everyone who is going ahead with the commodore gaming backplates. I am happy to go ahead but can you confirm that it will definately fit. I asked Ed about creating one for me and he did state that there was an issue in terms of holding the plate in place. Could that issue be resolved as well?

I actually have two commodore gaming pc'c. One of them houses my main desktop pc and one is empty ready for an 1200 transplant.

2)No is not possible.. better is to buy it unpainted ... make the extra holes that you need ... and then coated as with color that you want....

The small holes in the plate is like ED's project (logical fit perfect in the case, i don't have one for test) but is not plug n' play...

If I may just add some input to help out.

There is no issue adding the plate to the commodore gaming case if you first remove the old one, just use rivets. The issue I had(have) is securing the outer case panels to the new plate once it's been installed because there are no tapped threads in the plate. I have found a way of adding the threads back into the plate and that's using something called rivnuts or nutserts. To use the existing screws you'd need to find a supplier of 6/32 UNC rivnuts and install them into the back-plate using the correct drill size. I did find one supplier but they wanted about 7.50 for 10. Metric nuserts are available on Ebay but you'd then need to use metric screws to fasten the case panels.

I remember somebody suggested they did a similar mod and instead of removing the old plate they cut the middle section out to leave behind the edge and all the fixings.

Hope this helps.

Ed.

The case I have on order is not quite near the one in the photo, but having modded sheet metal cases in the past, using M3 screws with a locking nut gives a better, stronger junction than an Aluminium rivet and is more versatile. The new backplate (aluminium) and the edges of the new case (back removed -- easy to drill out rivets) should approximate enough to give a reasonable fit and finish; now making a proper PCI backplane holder will take much longer.

Once each of us has fitted his case, I think we should send photos and details to a thread to help others.

No cases in my shed, or at the recycling dumpster fit. I am looking to build a desktop open frame case. I was originally thinking about buying a QDIY PC-JMK8, but now I think I will get my brother to weld a bottom plate to the backplate to create an L shape. I am looking for at lightweight ATX psu's now, so the backplate can support it without extra reinforcement.

If a good case shows up, I might go for it as long as it has a window to show of all the exotic hardware - so please post.

lurch
24th May 2015, 08:59
GZ-F Plus series from Gigabyte might work, they're 18(W) x 420(H). Although I think that's too short to fit the A1200 motherboard and accelerator. Plus the backing plate would over hang both ends, I give up.

I haven't tried it but it may be possible to use a 6/32 screw(bolt), washer and a nut to crimp the rivnuts in place, depends how hard the rivnut material is. Insert the screw through the back of the rivnut (inside the computer case) add the washer and nut to the outside, use a tool to hold the screw and rotate the nut so that it squashes the rivnut in place. Would probably need a high tensile nut and screw/bolt, pennies on ebay.

lurch
2nd June 2015, 22:16
Don't need rivnuts, just use screws and nuts, works great. Also means you can transfer the panel to another case easily. :)

Hi Lurch (you rang?) :D

The rivnuts are a way to hold the side and top panels in place, as opposed to fixing the rear panel to the chassis.

The top panel I have bolted to the back panel. The removable side panels I have 4 slighty larger screws holding them in place, so I can remove them easily.

slightly off topic question but what software did you use to design the plates?
or does anyone know of any free software I can use to design similar that can be sent to manufacturers?

I know what I use, and that is CamBam (and no, it's not what your dirty mind thinks that it is :p), I draw simple stuff with it, and export the G-code to my machine.
But you can also use Inkscape, it's freeware, and also exports .DXF files, but the mfgr. still needs to know what to do with it, eg. toolpaths need to be made, based on the size of the cutter, but a quirky bloke knows how it works.

Thanks for the reply, and thanks to mastergr for his PM.
When I design PCB's I send over Gerber files to the manufacturer who then builds the PCB, is the .DXF similar? I send that off to some one who manufactures/cuts steel sheets?

I know this sounds like a very noob question but we all start somewhere :-)

Beavis
10th May 2016, 23:04
Ok, a .DXF (Autocad Exchange Format) is a vector orientated file, but you still have to specify some parameters, so look at this piccy.
The part that needs to be cut out is in red, the blue square is the toolpath, and that's smaller, why? Because I used a tool of 4 mm, when you're using a laser, then the tool size is (almost) neglectable.

OK thanks, I guess am going to have to do a bit more reading on this subject as I had (naively) assumed I could draw a square with a circle in middle and end up with a square piece of metal with a hole in it!! Lol
So on your example here would everything between the red and blue disappear/bet cut out by the drill? And is that space 4mm as per the size of your drill bit?

No, you are correct in your thinking (square and circle) and if you send that DXF from above to someone to cut it, you'll end up with a "nice" frame..

why would it make a frame
which line is cut? The red or blue

AXm77
11th May 2016, 13:51
Both, red outside+blue inside=frame. Color mean nothing.
If you send any part to do, never do any "tool paths"
(how you'll know what tool will be used?).

this:106190=106191

But we are "derailing" this thread. If you want talk about it, open new thread.

Yes of course but thanks for all the responses

Beavis
11th May 2016, 20:42
I agree on the fact that derailing is never a good thing, especially when a train is involved, but the damage over here is far less, so I'll just take the risk.
The red line is the outline of the part that has to be cut out, the blue line is the heart or toolpath of the endmill, in this case a 4 mm mill, so the distance between the 2 lines is 2 mm.
