You could cut the trace at pad 20 (A9) on the bottom of the original module and tie A9 on one of the chips to ground (jumper pin 5 to 26 on one chip).
I know this works because I made up some 4MB SIMMs and had a bridge to ground on A9 accidentally. It tested fine as 1MB but you would need to cut the trace on SIMM so the rest of the slots are not tied low.

One question though, why do you need 1MB when you have 4MB?
