I know there are a few cards on the market. What would you folks say the best all around accelerator? Looking to do CF + WHDLoad. Probably will do images with a gotek too.

Thanks.

Vampire 500 by far but sold out at the moment, and definitely overkill.

ACA500 would do what you want if you can find one.

How would the ACA500 compare to https://www.amibay.com/showthread.php?100883-68EC020-TK-new-A500-A1000-A2000-accelerator-by-Matze? or the HC533?

Thank you.

The ACA would be externally attached, upside down, not officially supported on A1000 (but it works) and slower than the 68020TK card.

The ACA comes with integrated workbench disks that can be extracted, a boot menu with some additional options and additional features that would benefit use in an A500.

The 68020TK is just an accelerator; that vendor will include a hardware kickstart adapter for your A1000 because it is required for use with it.

Hope that helps.

Second for the ACA500 as it holds the Rom, will save you some issues there. Plus you can hook it up to your A500 (assuming you have one)

They can also combine chip Ram from some expansions but I don't know how this works on an A1000

Vampire would be awesome but overkill for a WHDLoad machine, particularly when we get core 3.0 with AGA and native modes over HDMI plus Chip Ram from the Vampire up to 4mb I believe.

I just bought a Kipper Ram + CF adapter for a spare A500, I don't know if you can fit this in an A1000 but it would be the absolute basic setup for WHDLoad.

Good luck with your project.

Do not insert anything upside down in A1000 expansion slot! It will permanently damage the expansion board if system is powered up. Correct setup is back to front, not upside down.

This is yet another popular Amiga myth but probably also the most dangerous.

Here ya go:

Good point; poor choice of wording on my part. Since the expansion connector is reversed on the A1000, an ACA will install “front to back” orientation or “reversed” in comparison to the A500. This was the only point I was attempting to make.

There was no intention of telling anybody to insert a card upside down into their A1000.

A1000 86-pin connector orientation vs A500 is that: Top is always top; Bottom is always bottom. Any forward facing peripheral on an A500, must rotate 180 degrees and face rearward on the A1000, and generally be supported due to the height.

I've put the ROM adapter/switcher module (hack) in my A1000 so I have multiple kickstart boot options (not floppy loaded). I recommend that, or just a single ROM adapter, for whatever path you choose.

Multi-Function Accelerator: I use an HC533 w/33Mhz 68HC000, with it's better-than-A600 IDE interface & a Flash DOM, 8MB of full-speed 16-bit RAM, which offers 100% 68K code compatibility (and no cache-related or instruction-related problems on 68020+ CPUs). It even fits on top of an Insider 1000 1.5MB (convenient riser) or Starboard (both were popular at the time) FastRAM (@ motherboard speed). Stock systems with the WCS daughterboard will need a stack of machine-pin socket & header pin strips (I used both) to elevate any internal 68K socket expansion over the WCS board. For any internal solution, always consider the proximity of the A1000 floppy drive metal cover, and like the above-mentioned sidecar orientation, any CPU socket expansion orientation from an A500 is also rotated 180 degrees for the A1000.

I had to reply because this is very common, sometimes accidental (like yours), sometimes just repeating something that someone else (incorrectly) said on the internet or some magazine or something..

If I remember correctly, I read about A1000's expansion port being "upside down" practically immediately after A500 was released!

FWIW - I've connected A2000 CPU slot cards to the A500 and the A1000 edge connectors. The A2000 CPU slot cards orientation vs the A500/A1000 edge are actually a top-to-bottom/bottom-to-top inverted orientation. There are subtle signal/clock differences/omissions, too, but data/address/bus signal positions effectively need to be exchanged to make them work.

I sometimes think they got that upside-down idea from that wiring difference.

A500 -> A1000 is just spin the unit to face rearward.

A lot happened here, can someone summarize what I should buy lol. I understand the whole upside down port now, thanks.
If you could point me to a website, that'd be great too.

The HC533 can be had here: https://sordan.ie/product/583/turbo-card-hc533-33mhz-8mb-ram-ide-amiga-500/ - they go in and out of stock, so be aware. I've bought 2 at separate times, so no issues.

AmigaKit US is here: https://amigakit.amiga.store/?currency=USD - various hardware, legal ROM kits, Workbench, etc.

AmigaOnTheLake is US based, and they have some things from time to time. http://amigaonthelake.com/

The TF530 or 68030 TK units are seen typically here on Amibay by a couple of board builders that develop them or build the boards from open source material of the authors. They tend to come up in batches.

The Whicher and other related items (info) can be found at https://retro.7-bit.pl/, and http://amigastore.eu/en/597-wicher-500i-accelerator.html has July restock expected, and other items for sale.

Vampire products you can google for the site that you get on a waiting list. They get sold on occasion here and on other boards, and 'bays, along with some of the stores noted get a small batch they pre-ordered some time ago.

Non-accelerator, the IDE68K interface and 8MB FastRAM expansion get sold here by MKL, also occasionally on that "other 'bay".

A500 CPU slot relocation boards are seen here on Amibay in different designs.

Single Kickstart ROM adapter modules for A1000 are here on Amibay, although I'm on the list for one of the 2-ROM switchers, I can't recommend joining the list that hasn't seen any units shipped in probably a year now, and the waiting list is long. It's technically possible to stack an A500/2000 ROM switcher on a ribbon extension to get the same if multiple kickstart options is your goal.

I've noted what I've bought as it meets my wants and needs, but yours may differ. I also have a (classic) VXL-30 from Microbotics (they come up from time to time, used), and plenty of hardware for the other machines (see signature line) I have. Not an extensive list of places to buy from, but good luck.

Any hacks (like the ROM adapter), take you time. I put in header pins and used DuPont modular jumpers to effect most of my mods (cut traces could be effectively reconnected), and nothing is hardwired soldered in if I need to undo it.

You brought up the non-accelerators. Do I need an accelerator and say the 8MB fast RAM? I have an Amiga CD32 and that was just adding a card but this is a bit outside my knowledge wheel house. I remember some one mentioning the Vampire didn't do the RAM. I just want to effectively spend my money :p

I’ve created and released free gerbers for a kickstart rom switcher / adapter for the A1000 under the hardware section of this board EAB and linked easy to follow instructions for the mod to the 1000. If you’re tired of waiting on that list and can do simple soldering, you can get 10 pcbs made up for $2 at EasyEDA. That adapter allows switching between two ROMs and also relocates the 68000 socket to fit most of these accelerators without removing the floppy or rf shield or having to otherwise modify your A1000 case to accommodate them.

[edit] Apologies, but I misspoke about where I posted these free gerbers above. You can see the post to the A1000 Kickstart switcher gerbers here:
