    Default New type of C128 VDC 64k expansion

    Hi people!
    Here is SaRuMan-VDC, the new static RAM based 64k expansion for the Commodore 128 VDC.

    The traditional type of 64k expansion board for the VDC simply disconnects the two 16k x 4 DRAM chips from the mainboard and offers a pair of sockets for two 64k x 4 DRAM chips. This new type is much smaller, consumes much less power and uses a single static RAM chip.

    Here is a picture of the board of the product:

    The price tag is 17$US or 15 Euros per unit + shipping.

    Shipping a small packet (up to 8 units) to the US is 8$. Shipping cost for Australia/NZ and South America is 10$US, Europe is 8 Euros.

    Quantity discounts are applicable.

    Just like all my products, this board comes with a 90 days money back guarantee and a 3 years repair/replace warranty.

    Would it be possible to add support for an 8568 upgrade as well?

    From a technical point of view, it should be very easy. It's just a matter of readjusting for the different pinout. It seems for the DRAM, only RAS and CAS have changed place.

    However, I have a very hard time seeing anyone buy a version for the 8568 because it usually comes on the C128DCR which already has 64k of VDC RAM. So not a very good seller.

    Could you tell me specifically why you'd need one for the 8568 ?

    Sorry, not one that would work in a DCR, but one that would allow an 8568 to work in an original flat or plastic 128D. Similar to https://www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=59792

    Whoa! This is not an expansion at all, this is an adapter to allow a 8568 to work on a computer designed for a 8563.

    When you do an adapter like that, you can't have the pins that connect to the board as pass-through and just cut the 8 data lines going to the motherboard's DRAM and the result is something too big to close the cover of your C128. The adapter in your link also connects the 4416 address lines to ground.

    There are at least 9 lines that must be redirected so there is no choice to use a socket for the 8568 and 2 set of 24 pins header to plug in the C128's board. The resulting 'sandwich' is too tall to fit like a simple board slid under the VDC.

    The 64k VDC static RAM expansion is just a variant of another board Francis also sells for 18$US. The original board is used on C64c board 250469 and C64 breadbin board 250466 and it replaces the 2 41464 DRAM 64k x 4 bit with a single static RAM chip.

    This not only reduces the amount of consumed power but it is also important because getting old DRAMs has become quite difficult. They also fail quite easily compared to static RAM.

    Forgot to mention there will also be a version of this board which will provide 64k expansion for the Commodore 16 internally. A very small board you slide under the TED and it will work with ALL versions of the Commodore 16.

    The designation of the products are as follows:
    - SaRuMan-64 -> the original SRAM replacement for C64 boards 250466 and 250469
    - SaRuMan-VDC -> The 64k VDC expansion
    - SaRuMan-TED -> The 64k expansion for the C16/C116 which installs under the TED

    ALL AVAILABLE RIGHT NOW!

    So, the burning question, when/how can we order it? I've a C128 Wedge that needs this.
