A1200 Black Box Tower Project

Good job, Steve. Congratulation for your nice A1200! And sonnet is working fine, I wouldn't have thought!!!
You are a true pioneer!

Thanks! I think Warp3d will be an issue thought, not a huge loss for me as I prefer to use the radeon.

Will do a proper video with sound at some point!

Slightly longer video with sound :)

Just a bit of fun, I tested with a Voodoo 3 and was able to get Warp3D going in 68k but sadly not PPC at the moment. PPC + Warp3D can't open the screen and/or you get a PPC exception.

Managed to get Shogo to run in Software Rendering off the PPC but after the menu it gives a garbage screen!

Quake is 68k/Warp3D here: (runs poor as my 060 only 50mhz...)

Tried today to get an Apocalypse G4 working with the A1200, no go sadly but at least I have one here in case an A4000 lands on my doorstep!

Hedeon has said that there's no 128mb support for the (unsupported) TX 1200 which is a shame as the K1 card runs fantastic and stable on my setup, it would have been amazing to get G4 speeds but guess it wasn't meant to be.

Here are the cards:

And installed in the A1200

You tried your best and you never know someone might figure this issue out

As for the build quality of the Blackbox tower: Just Google "Zalmann R1" and be surprised (not necessarily in a positive way.)

I sold my Blackbox a short while ago, and never really fell in love with it. It just felt cramped and somehow cheapish. I also disliked the side window, because I found it very hard to tidy up the cables with FastATA, Mediator, front USB and Sound connection, etc.

So, you have my deepest respect for your journey!

Hey torsti76, thanks for looking at my thread.

For sure there's some issues with the quality, I agree regarding keeping cables tidy but it was the same in the old days, you can make it nice with some effort.

I like the look of the case and all seems to fuction well so it'll do!

On another positive note I managed to get the WOS version of Duke3D to run last night.

Just sharing some Quake Timedemos, this is with the Bigfoot Killer Networks K1 @ 333mhz. Timtheloon is kindly sending me his M1 @400mhz which also has 266mhz bus instead of 133mhz so be interesting to see how that translates into performance.

Timedemo 1:

Play-though 3 levels (stability test) this was after running all 3 demos.

Great videos! Looking forward to seeing the comparissons with the M1

Thanks Trixster. I made some tests today with the M1. (400mhz G3 vs 333mhz on the K1)

The performance gain in Quake is around 10% (from a 20% increase is CPU) so not a massive upgrade but nice to get the extra frames.

Timedemo 1 goes up from 24.4 to 26.8 (9.84%)

Here are all 3 Timedemos in one Video:

And also tests to see how increasing the resolution affects the frame rate, here I test 400x300 and 512x384

I notice some white specks, I seen this before with the Radeon in OS4 so I think that is a driver issue although I didn't change anything from the K1 setup.

It's a real shame that we have no 128mb support on the A1200 for the Sonnet driver as I'd love to see what the Apocalypse can do.

Next job is to put the K1 back in, tidy the cables and fit my new Sony Floppy Drive :)

I'm sure Tim want's his M1 back!

Looking forward to your forthcoming 4000 Project thread :)

Just a small update, finally got round to setting up Ken's Icons again and setup now on a proper Monitor (thanks to tbtorro for the Picasso96 help)

20200320_211406.jpg

All I need now is a nice AmigaOne Keyboard and the Mouse from my AAA pack which might never come :ninja:

I've build up my machine same as @fitzsteve:
Amiga 1200, TF1260@50-100Mhz, Mediator TX, Voodoo3, Killer K1, Terratec 512i.
Quake runs really nice:

Well BlitzQuake68k is also very playable on 68060@100Mhz:

Warp3D is running:

To make Warp3D run, one need to:
Install the 3000/4000 PPC Warp3D drivers from Mediator, this would be:
Libs:Warp3D/GFXDrivers/W3D_Picasso96_PPC.library
Libs:Warp3D/HWDrivers/W3D_AvengerBE_PPC.library
Libs:Warp3D/HWDrivers/W3D_AvengerLE_PPC.library
I also use
ENV:Mediator/VoodooMem = 8 - If using 8MB here, Warp3D for 68k gets additional 6FPS on BlitzQuake68k, so it jumps from 21FPS (with 12MB set) to 27FPS (8MB set)
ENV:Medaitor/MMU = Yes - which makes it possible to use the sonnet lib and Warp3D on 68k in the same time as using Warp3D drivers from 3000/4000.

Usually after running some Warp3D software, the amiga will freeze, reboot etc. Gears PPC are ok, but after running Encore, it is very likely that the amiga will crash.

Reviving another old thread today, I was interested to see if the PiStorm32 was a potential CPU replacement for the Blizzard 1260. I managed to get it working and it's extremely fast es expected, there's a big bottleneck on the PCI bus and no MMU support (so no Warp3D right now) but everything else works including the sound card and on the Mediator.

Here's some pics:

So you are using your PCI-GFXCard and not the one from Pi, correct?

Yeah the Pi is only a CPU rest is via the Mediator, I was hoping to get the Warp3D with the Voodoo running but no MMU (maybe they will add support some day)

Here's a Video of Quake 2 with the CD audio, etc. Software rendering.
