I have an NEC PowerMate Luggable SX that was working perfectly until I turned it on and the screen went wierd.

Photos attached of before and after.

What do you think the problem is?

Could be wrong here but assuming it's a plasma display, it looks like it's leaked some gas. My second guess would be screen rot, though that usually wouldn't happen overnight.

This is 1988 vintage so it wouldn't be plasma.

You'd be surprised how old plasma technology is! And yes, your display is a plasma one! Have a little reading here:
https://books.google.gr/books?id=fS...v=onepage&q=NEC PowerMate Luggable SX&f=false
"that orange-colored, low-contrast, gas-plasma display is driven by a Paradise Systems VGA chip... "
If i were you, i'd try to replace it with something different; surely a job requiring patience.
