    Default CDTV CD-ROM Circuit Board

    Hi,

Looking to harvest the PCB from a CDTV CD-ROM unit. Will consider buying CD-ROM units which show signs of life, but do not read discs due to a faulty laser/stepper motor or other mechanical issues.

    Thanks!

I'm just curious what you need it for? Or even if I could support you remotely...

I have 2 non working CDTV drives, but I'm going to repair them. I would consider selling some but only if I will eventually give up. My plan is to mod PCB to support new laser replacements. In past I already successfully replaced laser but had to modify laser. Now my plan is to make this easier without laser changes.

Hi! The drive would take many restarts to actually manage to spin up and read a disk. Reading around, it seemed the likely cause was bad caps. I asked a friend who does a lot more soldering than I do to recap it for me and now... it’s dead!

Have traced a few lines with a multimeter, but not had time yet to find and sit with a schematic to see what’s going on. I thought with a second board I might be able to diagnose the problem better. Kinda grasping at straws, I know!

Any advice you can provide is greatly appreciated!

I hit similar problem after recap.
C206 cap has marked reversed polarity on PCB.
It's responsible for laser vertical position. Cd Rom will fail to detect CD presence. You can hear/see the head is moving (move to centre, check CD presence for few seconds, move outside), but CD will not spin.
If not sure polarity it can be replaced to bipolar cap 10uF 16V.

In my album there is CDTV CD cap map and the C206 cap (green) has marked + and - showing correct polarity.

You need to replace the cap with new one but correct polarity or bipolar. (The wrong cap polarity might already damage laser.)

Thanks ori1a. Iíve just had time to come back to this. Unfortunately I donít think thatís my issue - the drive appears completely dead - no movement at all.

So Iím still on the lookout for another PCB or complete (but non-working drive) to try to figure out what the problem is.

piacc64 - did you have any luck looking for a PCB?

    Thanks!
