Default GOTEK and HXC FIRMWARE on ATARI STE

So, After buying 2 HXC units recently for my STE and amigas i found the cortex firmware for GOTEK.

I bought 2 and soldered in the pin headers , I had a spare usb - serial adapter and flashed the cortex firmware, dropped on my adfs and it worked great in my 600 & 1200...... Well, Execpt for the massacre i had to do to the case ........*facepalm*

After spotting a forum post saying the HXC firmware would work on a GOTEK i spent the 10 euro and got a link to install it.

After installing the HXC serial bridge software the fun began.

I plugged in a GOTEK hooked up the serial adapter and put the password and contact details into the serialbridge software and it took many attempts over 20 minutes to read - device detected.

It kept saying "LINK IS UP!" - "LINK IS DOWN!"......

I hit program and it said "STARTING!".... And it sat there.

After 2 reboots / resets it finally programmed.

Once programmed with the bootloader then the firmware *.UPG can be uploaded on a USB stick and holding both buttons at powerup.

The GOTEK unit fits well into the ATARI and there is just enough room to flip the floppy cable over to plug it in.

The HXC firmware (At the moment) means the need to convert to *.HFE Images which isnt so bad.

The GOTEK then behave exactly like a HXC unit, The directory list speed is identical and everything works the same.

As a bonus the GOTEK fits so nicely into a ST that onbly a small cut is needed to remove the floppy button hole.
My units are even the same color as an ST

So, Is it worth the greif flashing a GOTEK with HXC firmware ????

Yes, But only if you have patience as it was NOT straightforward.

    Lee

    UPDATE 16/05/15 **********

Bought 3 more units with intention of loading HXC firmware into them , Sent a payment for 1 unit and quickly got a reply saying my account had been credited with 1 license.

So i hooked up my drive and ........ Wont recognise.

OK , so i fired up the ST programming software and blasted in the cortex firmware..... NO errors , Verified OK.

So we know all connections are good, unit tests OK in amiga.

reconnect fire up HXC serial bridge again , Nope , Just sits at "Link is UP!" , no error nothing, reset GOTEK, Still nothing.

Reflash cortex again and yet again completes without error.

Update CH340 drivers , no effect , 3rd time i flash cortex flawlessly.

boot into XP machine , same as above, goto PC number 3 , YET AGAIN cortex OK , HXC just waits there at "Link is UP!"

UPDATE. was server problem at their end. Quickly fixed by Mr Hxc.

Tried to flash and got what happened at top of this post.......

Moved over to win XP machine and flashed without issue..

Bought 2 more licenses and flashed those too smoothly

3 x atari st kitted out and have spare unit for 1200. .Adf support is ip

Anyway by correctly copy/past the password provided and using the right driver for your usb serial adapter to avoid the BSOD, this can be done in 4 minutes

BTW the device can be get from amigastore with the HxC bootloader flashed. Once the bootloader is inside the device, any update can be done with a simple USB stick

    Hi Jeff,

interested as I already have several Gotek units (and incidentally, HxC units), but just wondering - is the registration/account locked to a single Gotek unit, or can I install on several once an account is purchased/set up?

I didnt have any BSOD's it simply kept switching to link is down / up then when i did get "link is up!" stable i pressed program and it froze at "starting!"..... twice.

too be fair it may be my cheap-as-chips serial adapter from ebay, but i think most people will probably have similar devices.

I tried downloading the files and thought I had succeeded until I opened the STM32_SerialBridge.zip, it was only 50.0kb and comes up with unexpected end of archive. Any other attempts to re-download the file comes up with :-

    "The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web."

Is anyone else having a problem downloading the file or is it just me or my provider stopping it?

    Cheers,
    Allen

Can anyone upload the full file here so that I can have a look at it (STM32_SerialBridge.zip).

    Cheers,
    Allen.

    Edit
Aha the problem was with Avast internet security, I switched off the shields and tried to download and it was fully successful

Which Goteks are the best ones to use SFR1M44-U100K or SFR1M44-U100 or are they both the same. Are there models to avoid?
