    Default VIC20 VC20 Plug'n'play S-Video Modification

Know the problem? VIC20 colours don't line up? Red, Cyan, Green, Yellow & Purple text can't really be read? Black, white and blue seem to be ok?

    Here is the answer...

S-VIDEO mod. Plug and play. No soldering needed (your 6560/6561 VIC-I chip needs to be socketed). Remove the lid of the RF shield ('tin'). Lift the chip out (taking ESD precautions, noting the orientation of the chip). Pop in my mod, the wire on the socket will go over the top of the top of the 'tin' and between the 'fingers' of the lid. The cable is traced around the back of the 'tin' and between the serial and video outputs, secured to the motherboard (eyelet next to datasette edge connector). Replace the 6560/6561 VIC-I chip. Simply plug in the supplied cable into the back of the VIC20 and connect the 2x 1pin DuPont connectors and the s-video + stereo connectors to your TV and bam. Crisp clean colours like you've never seen before.

    The Problem

The chroma 'creeps' on brighter colours. visble gaps between pixels on blue and almost checkerboard on red/cyan/purple/green/yellow:

    The Mod

Plug, play. No soldering skills needed. Screwdriver to open the case and assist lifting the VIC-I chip only. Total fitting time, less than it took me to type this offer...

Please make sure you use ESD precautions (touch a radiator/heizung) and then open the case. Keep touching the radiator from time to time. Prize the 6561-101 VIC-I chip (note the original direction) out with a small flat head screwdriver. Carefully insert the mod into the socket (PIN2 is missing, and a red wire is attached). This should be the same direction as the VIC-I was (PIN1 is top right as you face the mainboard). When the mod is inserted, replace the VIC-I chip and guide the cable with the 'dupont' connector (attach to the mainboard next to the datasette edge connector with a cable tie). Reassemble VIC20.

Now connect VIDEO and DuPont to DuPont. Connect to TV. Power up VIC20, power up TV. Hopefully there is a remarkable difference.

See here for a step by step guide. Thanks to Sven.

Received my cable today - video quality on my VIC has never looked better! Had a slight issue with the wire coming loose from the IC socket, but easily fixed with 2 minutes of soldering though. Very happy with results, thanks!

@warkopz your second mod + cable was posted already

@amigo-mexicano Sorry for the delay (I'm bad). Well I don't have an NTSC model that can benefit from the MOD. Yes it will work, but there is no point in fixing if not broken?
