I've recently layouted a board that allows one to substitute the near impossible to get VIC-II found in Max Machines (MOS 6566 with SRAM interface) with an ordinary C64 VIC-II (6567 with DRAM interface). Schematic and development was done by Vossi http://lc64.blogspot.de/2016/08/max6566-replacement-pcb-finshed.html
If you change the crystal it might also be possible to convert Max Machines to PAL (untested).
Boards have been made by OSHPark and are of high quality, board comes pre-assembled (pictures 1 & 2 show the board for sale) _without_ a VIC-II. Picture 3 is a symbolic photo showing how the board looks inside a max machine.
Tested with the following VIC revisions: 6567R8, 6567R9, 6567R56A.
Asking price on Amibay: 16€ + shipping and PayPal fees (bank transfer also possible)
Additional info: the article is also currently listed on eBay for 18€ to avoid confusion.
