Closed Handwritten UK disks with " ~ BACKUP ~ " in fine blue or red marker

Sorry to tell you this, but 99.9% chance they are in a landfill. :)
Well, I'm equally sorry to tell you that I don't think it's accurate to say that only 0.1% of floppy disks from the 80s & 90s have survived.

Hole is to differentiate DD and HD disks.
HD floppy drives have sensor at this location.

Was it common practice to punch holes in floppy disks ?

Don't think it was common, but I also did it on occasion if I only had DD disks and needed a HD disk. When people moved away from Amigas, they had lots of DD floppies lying around which were no longer very usable, so making a hole made them usable again in the PC.
 
All I can say is it was common for me [emoji23] A lot of the fake HD disks I created from SD ones still work today after 30 years stored in an attic [emoji2369]
