Hi!

I've just got an Amiga 1200 accelerator from a friend (it's been stored for quite a few years), and the battery is showing some signs of leakage... please take a look at the pictures!

Although I am eager to shove it into my shiny "new" A1200 (thanks Dan!), I'm afraid I might damage the accelerator if O put power through it without taking action. What do the experts recommend? Cleanup and change the battery before trying it out? What should I use to clean it up?

Thanks a lot!

Rip that battery off.

Then pour some ISO alcohol over the area with a cotton bud, clean the area and check if the accelerator are still running.

You don't need a battery, it is there just to keep correct date and time.

But if you want one, replace the battery with a VL2020 unit or the lithium hack on Aminet.

just like rkauer said, it seems it did not do any damage :)

Also don't try to run the board with that battery hooked in. I lost one Apollo 1220 some years ago because of this.

Thanks for the tips! Now to source some isopropyl alcohol... I only have ethyl alcohol at home... and an electronics cleaner spray. I'll check if this is based on isopropyl.

And let's see if I can make this Apollo rock again! :)

isopropyl

isopropyl

Isopropyl is in Europe available in the pharmacia.

i have had some questions what I was going to do with that:D when I bought it, it contains leathel substance and it can cought flames in pure mixtures.

I use it mainly to clean vinyl with clean rain water. 10% isoprpyl and 90 percent wather and 1 drop of dreft. (do not use it on your accelerator this mixture)

It is also a good fluid to clean camera's scensors when using the pads (contain it also) for people who have sugar disease, it costs almost nothing shops sell specialised stuff at x10

It cleans a lot of stuff, so it might be a good investment anyway. You can use it to clean stuff this way and have it pure to solve your electrical problems.

Further it cleans floppy drives heads, tape decks heads, video etc.. Thing to have in house.

In the past i used alcohol for wounds, but it contains some other fluids that are worse..

If you can't find any then car carburettor cleaner is practically the same. I use carb cleaner myself for these jobs.

If you're looking for isoprop, in the UK at least, I was able to buy a litre of the stuff from Maplin's (electronics hardware specialists) and it wasn't very expensive. If you have anything similar, it might be worth dropping in and asking. As for me, that litre can has been going strong for about five years, and still isn't empty :)
