Checkmate Build (Part 6) CD Sound

Well my next project with this case is to get the CD Audio working properly. I can play music CDs using an app that reads the music from the data stream, but as I want it all, I want to use an app that can do that AND look up the CD details online. These apps it seems just get the cd drive to output audio over the analog connection. So at the moment I can either use two apps simultaneously or have either the online lookup or actually play music.

So....to fix this I need two things as far as I can see. A way to get the analogue sound out of the CD drive, and a stereo mixer to mix the sound from the cd with the sound from Paula. The latter I am investigating with a fellow amibayer, but in the mean time it seems I am not going to be able to get analogue sound out of this cd drive. I have therefore ordered a couple of things from ebay: a 5.25 IDE CD drive which should output the sound as wanted, (but change the look on the front of the case - I cannot decide if I prefer this or want to keep the cleaner look it currently has), and an IDE slot loader that may work with an adapter I have got to output the sound. I would have to create/bodge a fitting for it if it works.

Both should be here by the weekend and I can check functionality in my other towered amiga where the sound routes through the soundcard.

    Well, just a quick update - I have today received the Dell Vostro 1510 IDE slot loader, which when combined with the adapter I have does seem to output analogue sound via the cdda cable. I was able to connect it to my tower and make cds play as expected.
    The audio mixer that a.mi.goun has made for me is in transit so I cannot fully test in the Checkmate case as I only really want to open it all up the once. The next question is whether or not the slot loader fits the drive cage on the checkmate case. If it does then I suspect I will just swap it in and be done.
    I do keep looking at the 5.25 drive though and although I know it will change the nice lines of the case, for some reason I am still tempted.
    Hmm, will have to see how it looks. Having an external eject button would also be helpful.

    Well, the slot loader doesn't fit with the metal support from the checkmate case, and so doesn't line up. In future I may make a support for it, but not now. So for the moment it will be a 5.25 drive. I may use the one from my tower and will post comparison pics later.
