  • My Neo Geo AES

Well after 21 years of ummmming and ahhhhhing, I finally bought my dream console... the Neo Geo AES!

What a beaut eh? I actually bought it locally so the shipping wasn't astronomically high (which has always put me off buying one of these).

It came with AV cable, 220V (non original) PSU, an original joystick, a brand new NGCD stick and 2 games; The Super Spy and Samurai Spirits (Samurai Shodown in US and Europe).

Wanna see inside? HELL YEAH!!!! : -

ITS A REV 1 JAP 60Hz MODEL! the oldest and the best for outputting RGB (newer models are notorious for having total ass RGB and need various bypass mods to make the signal clean again). I was very lucky here as the guy I bought it from had no clue what rev it was, I hoped it would be a Rev 1 or 2. The only gripe of this early board is the sound output is only Mono from the Plug at the back. However, Stereo is present on the board next to the headphone volume slider, one has to just run some cables, drill a few holes and pop a coupla phono sockets on the old girl and BINGO! Of course, I plan to do this

Above you can see the CPU, its got lots in common with our beloved Miggy, its a 68HC000 running at 12 MHz. I plan to switch mod and overclock this beaut to 16MHz, this will help the more taxing games to run with less to no slowdown Some games don't like this so I will have a toggle switch somewhere to pull her back down to 12MHz.

This is the BIOS chip, this will be coming out and i'll place in a 40 pin DIL socket. Then I will put in a Universe BIOS V3.0! this enables many enhancements over the original BIOS such as switching the AES games in to MVS mode and MVS games (through an adapter) to Console mode (basically manipulating the credits). It will also enable lots of other tweaks through a BIOS menu. Take a look-see....

    http://unibios.free.fr/

The big ass cart port! what a beaut!

And below, The early model has a Video out enhancement daughter board attached above the Memory card slot. : -

Here's the Samurai Spirits Cart, what a monster! :-

Brand spanking new Neo Geo CD Joystick, it works fine with the AES and I actually like it better than the original stick! :-

The original stick, its seen better days, but proves this unit has had many a happy day of playtime! :-

Typical scene of these old sticks, crack marks on the ball. Its looks worse than it is, its not gonna break : -

So what do I plan to do with this old girl (apart from play some shiat hot games)?

    - Do a true stereo mod and output to phono's
    - Tap the RGB points on the board and bang in a V4.1 JROK RGB to component and Svideo encoder - http://www.jrok.com/hardware/RGBv4/
    - Overclock to 16 MHz.
    - Pop in a UNI BIOS V3.0
    - Make a Power LED in Reset button Mod. The Neo doesn't have a power light at all, so i'll make a mod that lights up the reset button when power is on (see mods at www.jamma-nation-x.com)
    - Buy an MVS to AES converter: - http://www.arcadeshock.com/items/acc...acc-detail.htm
    - Buy another NGCD stick (or an original one if I find one in good nick)
    - Buy a mem card or 2.
    - probably only ever be able to buy 1 AES game per year as they are insanely priced. hence the MVS adapter (although that alone is stupid money too). I would like to buy ASO II next, and luckily that goes for £not-too-crazy.... and its one of my all time fave shmups

Overall, as far as 2D consoles go, this ranks as one of the best, if not the best console out there. For me, just because i've lusted after it for so long i'm like a kid all over again. I've been sat writing this up and taking pauses now and then just to gaze at its awesomeness.

Stay tuned for all the hacks and mods i'll be performing on this beast over the coming months!

    Thanks for looking!

Its in me bones Steve mate! I can't flippin' help it for now though i've been playing it a fair bit. Its funny how actually owning the REAL games makes you play them so much. I've got every single Neo Geo game on my arcade machine under emulation but I never spend any more than 20 mins at a time playing a single game. I was sat earlier playing The Super Spy for over an hour! and its crap! haha! I just ordered an RGB cable though, the picture looks like ass on my LCD TV through composhite

Well its another good excuse to do some hacks, and this will be quite a light affair compared to my A1200!

Hey Les - that's soooo cool!

I remember the first time I saw one of those (on import) was in a place called Thurso (of all places! couldn't believe it! Thurso is about as far north in Scotland as you can get and still call it a town! The place had a PROPER gaming shop with PC engines and all sorts!). At the time (many moons ago now of course) I just couldn't afford one, or even come close. I drooled at it in the shop. It's on the list now though (as are a few things from when I had no money!) so I'm well envious of you - and in such amazing condition too - it looks brand new!

Hat's off to you Les! Hope you're loving it!

Bring it to R3Play 2011 please

              John

You know what John? we had a shop in Hull too and they had a Neo Geo behind a glass cabinet for stupid money, and nobody ever bought it (AFAIK). I would stand and stare and drool too Right next to it was a PC Engine GT, more drool fodder!. Oh just for one touch! HAHA! I was ultra sad and made a scrap book of every neo geo article I could find in magazines, I was a bit obsessed! Its really weird how a life long urge has just been relieved! And I managed to do it even after promising the wife when I sold off my massive retro collection 5 years ago that i'd never buy any more old consoles..... she doesn't even know I bought it yet! But i'll do what I did with the CD32. Play it in secret for a few months and leave it randomly in slight view so at some point she will see me put it under the TV and not even bother to ask what or where it came from! HAHA! I'm such a sly bast!

It is in good nick from the top, but unfortunately the underside is a bit scratched, two of the rubber feet have come off (probably a long time ago) and the offshot is that its base has been scraping around a bit over the years. I'm thinking of getting another base with feet, at some point. But from the top it looks really great (which is the main). But I must admit its slightly bothering me, and when I saw the photos of the top I never thought to ask about the underside, it wasn't till I got it that I saw it, was a bit gutted, but when I found out it was a rev 1 I soon cheered up

You know what John, i'd love to bring it to R3play, let me see if I Can manage it, i'd really like to bring my A1200 too and there is only so much I Can manage (and risk) on a plane flight.

SO nice to see one of these on Amibay. I've had a few in my time but for one reason and/or another I'm without at the moment, however I have just entered into the MVS scene.

Who knows may swap a few tricks/hacks down the line.

All the best with the AES, many happy times ahead I am sure. Oh and as far as insanely priced, keep an eye out for boot carts, AES are NOTORIOUS for it and I'm sure you already know but http://www.neo-geo.com/ is a good place to drop by occasionally!

                    Cheers RED IMPACT

Yeah, i've heared about rip off fake AES carts, I will be very careful there, cheers for the warning though

I've already joined www.neo-geo.com too I've been on there alot over the last week just reading and getting in on whats what.

Yeah, keep an eye on what i'll do here, and if you have any good advice/tips/tricks to share along the way then please do. Hopefully at some point I can give you some too

I've already sourced a nice condition underneath with all four rubber feet intact, its a broken rev 1 so the screw mounts match my own. good thing is i'll have a mainboard for spares should I ever need parts too.

Tomorrow i'm gonna try and socket my BIOS ready for a UNI BIOS, and I have a 16MHz crystal rattling around in my randoms box so may try and overclock it. I've not got any of the games that are known to slowdown, but I can at least verify the mod as working within the hardware (dark blue screen on boot with no game inserted) and test to see if the two games I have boot or not. I read somewhere that the recommended overclock is 14MHz, but can be up to 16MHz so it might depend on the tolerance of my actual CPU. I'll socket the crystal of course just incase I need to source a 14MHz one. Anyway, will update with pics

I you like side scrolling shooters like RType, I highly suggest both Pulstar and Blazing Star. Both are excellent and Pulstar is ball breaking hard.

The NeoGeo AES is truly amazing. I have been collecting it from time to time since 1993. It's expensive, but worth it

Yes I like those games, I've only played them under emulation though. I really like Last Resort too

Since 1993? That is quite awesome! How many games do you have?

I did a few things today. Socketed my BIOS and added an overclock switch to change between 12 and 16MHz.

                            Out comes the BIOS.

In goes a 40 pin socket.

And BIOS into the Socket. This will house the UNI BIOS when I buy one

Cut pin 15 on the CPU and added one wire to the chip and one to the board where the leg was. im gonna inject 16MHz into the clock input pin on the CPU, and make a switch to bring the stock 12MHz in for games that don't like being overclocked.

Here's the 16MHZ Osc. Red/white stripe is +5V, black is ground and blue is clock.

red/white goes to +5v on an LS273, and Black goes to Ground.

Here is the mod hanging out for now for testing. Yellow "clock in" to the CPU is on the middle of the switch, and at either end you have purple (12MHz) and Blue (16MHz).

                            Close up of the switch.

                            Samurai Spirits and 12MHz.

Boot at 16MHz, this is normal for an overclocked Neo Geo,

SS at 16MHz, it doesn't like it at all. No probs, I can switch back to 12MHz for this game.

The Super Spy is great at 16MHz though! Doesn't seem any different really though. But this game doesn't have any slowdowns that i've ever noticed. The mod is going to come into its own when I get a game that needs it.

                            More to come soon

Very nice, lovely modifications. The Neo Geo AES joystick is the best console controller ever, period! A megadrive pad is good, a Saturn pad is great, but these sticks feel so pro and l33t.

For those who can't afford the AES (and mainly the games), a MVS motherboard and Supergun is the next best cheapest option. MVS carts are usually much cheaper than the AES counterparts.
Love consoles and computers, all welcome in my collection!
