I wonder, would this work on an Atari XE? It seems to have a very similar arrangement of DRAM - and it suffers horribly from visual artefacts due to the refresh cycle that SRAM might eliminate.

Yeah that that my first thought, but all pins are OK and the ULA has been carefully cleaned with a fibreglass pencil. I don't have another elk to test it on sadly. :(
