Tapuino, the $20 C64 Tape Emulator

It can be done, though most Tapuino's have text displays that would require quite some work and program space to show graphics. It should be easier on OLED equipped devices. But I think this would negatively affect the read / write process, so it would have to be done separately, that is, you...

Tapuino, the $20 C64 Tape Emulator

Does the tape work correctly from Datassette to C64? If not, you could have a misaligned R/W head or a bad tape. Also check that the SD card is fast enough and the level conversion circuit is suited (that is, not made of just resistors). Also consider that recording accuracy isn't perfect yet.

I always record from C64 to Tapuino with invert = 0.

There are no such signals. The tape just contains a train of pulses. When the computer loads from tape, it executes code that tells it when to stop the motor and/or run the loaded program. Tapuino doesn't run such code, hence it's up to you to correctly start/stop the recording. You may rely on...

Tapuino, the $20 C64 Tape Emulator

I filed 2 issues on the Tapuino GitHub page. Here's the text. 1) Datassette calibration function Very simple: a function which samples pulses and shows a percentage or something like that. It may work like this: Capture all the pulses occurring in a given time frame and store them only once...

Tapuino, the $20 C64 Tape Emulator

That's normal. Nothing can be done about this. You don't want that :-) If you're going to save something from the computer to the Tapuino, you need the uninverted signal. But i think it could be done differently, that is, instead of having an option to invert the signal, we could have 2...

Tapuino, the $20 C64 Tape Emulator

Mission complete! At first I didn't want to use an Arduino, but I got fed up with opening the box, detaching the SD adapter and attaching a parallel programmer, so I added a FT232 board and burned an Arduino bootloader. Firmware updates are painless now. More so because the parallel adapter...

Tapuino, the $20 C64 Tape Emulator

I found a fellow in the Netherlands who owns a DC2N v1 and he kindly did the test for us. The files are available here (there's a DC2N-specific DMP file, besides the normal TAP file). I tried the TAP file with Vice and the game loaded and started fine. Then I isolated the turbo section in this...

Tapuino, the $20 C64 Tape Emulator

I forgot to mention that recording accuracy also depends on the quality of the SD card and the level conversion circuitry, of course. I'm using a class 10, HC I "SanDisk Ultra" microSD card. For further assessment, If anyone reading this thread has a DC2N, they could carry out the Freeload test...

Tapuino, the $20 C64 Tape Emulator

    1. Yes, they're perfect. 2. Yes, at least with this particular turbo scheme. To be played with Tapuino, they need cleaning. With Vice, some need cleaning, some not. Those that don't work with Vice seem to lock up at the same point and in the same way, that is, when the main game should decrunch...

Tapuino, the $20 C64 Tape Emulator

Here are the results of my tests: [link]. I think the behaviour is correct now. The resulting TAP files don't seem to work when read back in Play mode (the game won't start) but this might be due to the nature of Freeload, as it was designed to be difficult to copy. I remember trying to copy...

The strange string comes up when I press "Abort" in the "Select mode" menu. Then, if I press "Next" or "Previous", normal menu items appear.
