You can bulk order on Digikey from Rochester Electronics, they have 17,862 in stock. But you need to buy 111 minimum, which you probably won't want to do.
This was brought up before but I didn't get an answer. Maybe it helps prevent bottlenecks with faster CPUs like the BFG9060 needing access to memory. Since the ATF16V8C-5JX is faster at 5ns instead of 10ns. So I would guess making U893 socketed would be a good idea.
