OK, I've got the graphics board out the way and had a look at the battery. After using a compressed air blower to clear away the fluff and dried bits of battery leakage it actually looks fine. The machine is still fully working and all 18 megs of RAM (2 chip, 4 x 4 meg fast) are all showing up...
Here is a picture of the battery, it has leaked which explains why it won't hold a charge anymore. I think it needs cleaning and removing.
