Setting up a PPC system

I have my BPPC from stan :)

I'd like to get a setup going so I may test the card; however I have no idea what I'm doing or what's best!

I understand I have some options:

1. Vanilla OS 3.9 installation
2. ClassicWB 3.9
3. AmigaSys AGA
4. Any others?

Im not sure what will be the best. I will have a Bvision soon also. Looking for advice on a choice.

Also what do I need to setup for an 060 + BPPC? Will I be able to add the Bvision to this later and upgrade so I can get a nice resolution.

I should say I have an OS3.9 CD and that's about it!

Remember to install the WarpOS extras and all will be fine. :)

My advice is to get CWB ADV and start from that. Or go full monthy and use AmigaSys will all bells and whistles.

I suggest you start off with a basic Workbench and go from there.

When it comes to CWB OS3.9 and WarpOS/Warp3D I ran into problems however everything works on my Vanilla OS3.9 install.

Also AmigasysAGA works a treat too with or without updating it to OS3.9

I do think a lot of my issues were to do with the Mediator so if you are not using PCI you may get different results.

Of course when you set everything up its no problem to add the Cyber Graphics drivers later, my advice though is to take a backup after each major step in case something you do later screws everything up, and trust me - it will!

These are the steps I would take to test the first time:

Setup a Basic Workbench 3.1 on UAE and add the following files to your 'Work' Partition:

IDEFix97 (get from Aminet)
WarpUP and WarpUpdate from below:

Transfer files to your Amiga HDD or CF and Boot your Amiga.

Install IDEFix to setup your CDROM (you'll need this to install OS3.9 and OS4)

Setup OS3.9 (make sure you make and use the emergency floppy)

Once OS3.9 is setup install WarpOS and WarpUpdate.

Reboot, and you should get a message telling you to Terminate PPC.Lib or similar, you should terminate that. There is something you can install to stop that but I didn't do that yet ;)

Now you should be able to try out some PPC/WarpOS software, ADoom WOS/PPC should work on your AGA machine, grab that from Aminet and take it for a spin - if you need the WADS gimme a shout.

To install OS4, this is a bit more complicated...

Use another CF or HDD from your OS3.9 install as OS4 overwrites your boot partition, you can play with dual boot setups later :cool:

Again, start with a basic WB3.1 and install IDE Fix 97

Load up the OS4 CD, it should have a reboot into OS4 option on your Workbench. Remember you'll need the HDD/CF and CDROM on the same IDE or it wont work.

Once rebooted in OS4 you should have an install OS4 option, hit it and that will update/overwrite your OS3.1 and you'll have OS4 :thumbsup:

*Beware, the installer takes a hell of a long time**

Hope this helps a bit, its a hell of a lot to take in and you'll have many sleepless night these comming weeks.

Been going through your guide; although was able to install OS 3.9 from scratch on a blank HDD using the WB3.1 floppy to boot.

What exactly do I need from the PowerUP page? Just the PowerUP and the update? Or do I need system disk also?

I am currently setting up an amigasys + stock 3.9 setup.

What extras does amigasys need? It asked me for my accelerator during install (does this imply it installs some of the required files?)

I think it just asks you for the boot picture to be honest, you still need to place your 060 libs in the 'libs' folder.

All I installed were the WarpUP and WarpUpdate and this has worked for me.

If you prepare your Amigasys4AGA setup then once on the real Amiga you can update it to OS3.9 with your OS3.9 CD, thats what I done.

Okay. I've installed WB3.9 + BB1 + BB2.

I install warpup and reboot, the machine boots to workbench and after one second the system freezes

Any ideas?

Yes I had the same probs it does that with the BB's installed so I had to leave them off. Maybe someone knows a workaround?

The general consensus that I have read is that Boing Bags and Warp3d just don't mix.
I'm not entirely sure what particular files cause the problem though.

I have been using my A1200 with 4 partitions:

1) plain 3.9 without WarpUP etc. (plus some enhancements of course) with BB1 only since i found out that BB2 gives me problems mainly with CGX4 (i only use CGX3 for this reason)

2) OS4 (easy to install after tinkering a lot with it in many setups). I could probably provide you with a mini guide later on

3) ClassicWB ADV SP (just in case that something goes wrong with my 3.9 partition)

4) MorphOS PUP (this one is a hell of an OS. Fast and beautiful, i could only say that it seems like the "OS4" i would want but i don't exactly have)

Of course, if you want to install PUP you should first receive your BVision cause it won't run without one. Not to mention that OS4 looks way better with a GFX card

You would think, but I always use the installer from Aminet anyway.

A whole day for a working WB setup :(

Best I got was an install that..

Displayed the cybergrafx logo on vga and gave me a dialogue on Scart to choose driver mode. No matter what I clicked the screen went grey and cybergrafx remained!

I lost a whole weekend trying to get my first RTG install up and running, stick with it mate and you'll get there in the end.

And after my weekend I still did not have a working setup!

Well I finally got a OS3.9 with Warp_UP installed. It asks me to terminate PPC at start which I think is a good sign.

I installed Cybergrafx v4 in winuae, hoping it would work when I moved to desktop machine; however no joy. Im getting a cloned screen through the bvision but when I run the cgfx tool it lists 0 display adaptors.

I've not used the CGX drivers before, but sounds like you got the PPC software installed ok. Have you tried Picasso96? I understand they are easier to work with.

I have yet to install WarpUp & CGX4 on my setup (no time for it), but what I understand by reading this thread, is that my work of setting up a working OS3.9 + BB1-3 has been in vain!

No WarpUp possible with BoingBags installed? :(
(I'm also running with original KS3.0, patched to 3.1+BB1-3 and mapped to RAM...)

I've not used the CGX drivers before, but sounds like you got the PPC software installed ok. Have you tried Picasso96? I understand they are easier to work with.

Does anyone know how easy it would be to get the winuae version of amigasys working my BPPC/Bvision setup?

What would need removing/adding?

I can dump you my install but youll need to remove the mediator drivers and re-install picasso96 or remove it and install cgx. WarpOS already setup and upradded to OS3.9 if that helps.

Its the normal AGA install, not sure how the full install would cope on a real Amiga, maybe I try it and make you a copy before installing the mediator drivers

Its the normal AGA install, not sure how the full install would cope on a real Amiga, maybe I try it and make you a copy before installing the mediator drivers

Oh and yeah above 800x600 takes some setting up and is more complicated depending on your Monitor.

Sadly during all this I discovered the VGA input on my brand new 25" HDTV doesnt work! So on a 15" jobby for now until ebuyer can sort it out :(

Why not sell the faulty PPC as working 1260?

I know you have lost a lot of money there but you can get some back.

So it really cannot be fixed now? I thought the PPC was working before?

I never got the ppc to work as it would not boot often enough to test.

Cosmos has done a great job on the card, but after fixing 4-5 things now to find the PPC is shot! I could throw another £150 at it to get the PPC replaced with 330mhz option, but might then discover another problem.

I guess I could sell as a working 1260. I guess it has some advantages (256mb ram) SCSI. Not sure anyone would pay enough to make me feel comfortable.

Really dismayed by the whole experience tbh.

Ok new day new challenge. Downloaded Warp3d from aminet. Installed it. Chose to install PPC option, selected blizzardppc etc. All installed ok. I try to run any of the test programs and it crashes with exception. No output whatsoever.

Anyone successfully installed warp3d on amigasysaga?

Do I need to reinstall cybervision?

This is the part that will take you till the end of time to setup, I'm sorry to report that but Warp3D brings even the best to their knees :(

However, I can say yes! I do have Warp3D working with my AmigasysAGA setup, however it is the mediator version and as such the steps I had to take to make it work will be of no help to you.

However, did you try the GLQuake (the 68k version) I drop Boxed for you? Thats already setup and works on my setup.

My Blizzard Vision should be with me in the next week or so, then I will have a chance to play with Warp3D for BVision.

Worth also mentioning my setup is working with Warp3D and Picasso96, not tried CGX as it does not support Voodoo cards.

Okay!

It turns out my HDTV was working after all, it's just fussy over what settings I throw at it.

At the moment I can only get 8bit screen modes to work. Any higher than 8bit it tells me that it can't open the test screen.

anyone have any ideas on this?

Ok strange. If I save the mode and reboot it, then I can use the test screen. 1024x768 working @ 24bit depth atm :D

Now when I try to get warptest working I get a Error: No ModeID found :s

I installed the warp3d archive from aminet and now it crashes everytime. I have read in the readme that I need 'dragging' to be disabled; however this option is greyed out with a tick!

So far I have, in this order:

Install 3.9 (Works fine)
Install Cybervision V4 (Works fine)
Install Warpup (Works fine)
Install Warpupupdate (Works fine)
Install Warp3d from wipeout cd (Get no modeid error) or Warp3d from amimet (get resets on all demos)

What am I doing wrong? :(

Even though my Warp3D is working now I still can't run the Demo's - no idea why.

But the Warp3D install from the Wipeout CD, after installing that did you try Quake GL as I suggested?

I can zip it up again if you like?

In some setups I have Warp3D working on its own (i.e with 68k software) but it crashing when ran with PowerUp stuff.

And in another setup I have Warp3D working with PowerUP but crashing with the 68k stuff and its down to mediator settings.

As I said there is very little support once you get to this stage however try a post at EAB as there are a few guys there that might be able to help.

But do try Quake/Quake2 to see if they are working. Also try Wipeout in Window Mode and disable CD Audio/Startup Vid (they crash it for me)

Mate I had all sorts of problems from lockups to restarts but I don't remember any error messages.

ModeID might be to do with your Envarc settings, DDNI tried to explain some stuff to me before as did Mad-Matt at EAB but I just didn't get it and in the end found settings that work via the mediator setup utility by trial and error, trying every individual setting till one worked, took me months to get it working :thumbsdown:

Btw did you just use warp3d from wipeout cd or aminet? The one from the wipeout CD crashes less violently than the one from aminet!

The ones in drop box to try are BlitzQuake68k.lha and Quake2.lha

Both fully setup just unLHA and run :thumbsup:

Both have simple gui just pick a screen mode and away you go...

Quake complains about no graphics display, quake 2 no joy :(

No CD drive connected atm to test the other options. Im trying to find an elegant way to have a CD drive connected all the time.

Was worth a try mate.

I saw the post at EAB, hopefully someone can help you out.

Only other thin I can think to try is Picasso96 + Warp3D instead of CGX

You could also try P96 + Warp3D without PowerUP and see if Quake works as its running on the 060

This is the reason I have so many CF cards :cool:
