help with radeon 9250 in mediator1200 first edition

hi all
i need help with my mediator1200 first edition with four slots and radeon 9250

i have installed os3.9 the latest updates mediatorcd 2.0

i have installed the picasso 2 from the os3.9cd and chosen the cvision 3d card and renamed it to radeon as per the update instructions and copied the card to the picasso folder in the libs directory

i can attach the board in picasso mode and have made resoultions and they test ok pic 2

i also have them in screen mode program and can use them to see the screen with workbench on pic 3/4

the problem is when i reboot it comes up with pic 1
then it stays on an standard pal mode pic 3 untill i tell it to use the screen mode of the radeon

i would be glad of any suggestions thanks

ps i forgot to mention i was using a voodoo3 before using this radeon and all was ok with that

It is a probably a locked program so Intuition can't close it. Check out startup programs to find the program that locks.

PS: It might be a good idea to post startup sequence here, if a more experienced user passes this thread. I do not have much experience with mediator pci at least not working

I had something similar when I did mine but can't remember what was up. :unsure:

Off the top of my head here are some things to check:

- Did you copy the monitor to DEVS:monitors/
- I think there may be a later 2.1 version of Picasso
- Have you tried re-installing Picasso?

My A1200 is apart at the mo' so I can't check my startup-sequence.

I do remember that when I had problems I could double click on the Radeon monitor driver in DEVS:monitors and the system would hang. When it installed ok I doubled clicked on the icon and it accepted the monitor driver ok.

Sorry I'm not much help at the moment.

Starting to remember some of my issues now. Try commenting out the following line in your user-startup:

Mixer NOGUI QUIET

I had issues with the mixer software and believe it was the same error you are getting. I don't yet have a compatible sound card, so I wonder if the Mixer software expects to see exactly the right supported soundcards.

I also notice the VGAOnly thing, not sure that's compatible.

What you could also try (but is very tedious) is start without a startup sequence and load up 2 shells from the command line. View your startup sequences in one shell and type each line into the other window. You'll eventually (possibly) get to the line which chucks the error.

I'm sure the Elbox docs say somewhere that both the VGA and DVI ports output a signal simultaneously, so it should just be a case of just connecting up and switching to the different video source on your display.

Thanks I'm doing the exact same thing right now and commenting the above lines out of my SS got rid of my errors except an intuition screen pop up...more messin around it seems :-)

well seems I'm stumped trying to get my Radeon9250 to show up in P96 prefs?? followed instructions exactly but now only card showing up is a Village card??? arghhhh

I can't get Picasso setup to show me anything other than the VILLAGE card? deleted all old monitor setting etc., uninstalled P96 too many times and reinstalled but still no luck.

thinking of starting from scratch with a new HD this weekend so we'll see where that leads in getting this Mediator to behave lol

Hi klx300r,

Sorry my friend I blew up my mediator a while back when I made a soldering error on the A1200 mainboard. I remember seeing the village card that you mentioned but it was so long ago now.

The only things I can think of at the moment are:

- Are you hitting the enter key when making the required changes to the Radeon icon tooltype?
- Are you double clicking the icon to make it active as in part 4. of the install guide "Click to the Radeon icon (in Devs:Monitors drawer)."

Have you setup medconfig and picked the correct gpu

Some more thoughts:

- Are the jumpers on the mediator set correctly? ...does the 1200 have jumpers? :unsure:
- Do you have the correct voltage Radeon? I seem to remember there being some issue with 3v and 5v models. Some info here

Also what cpu you using and what slot arrangement are you using

- hmm I had deleted all my picasso setting etc. after I couldn't get it to work & I tried a clean install of the latest Picasso 96 version and then followed the instructions to rename the Cvision3D to Radeon etc.
will dig up my 3.9CD tomorrow and try to reinstall picasso 2.

- yes I ran medconfig & chose my Radeon 9200 with 256MB ram (bought directly from Elbox btw)

- my CPU is an Apollo 060@50
- mediator slot arrangement is slot 1-4= Spider USB2.0, Radeon9200-256Mb, SB sound card, empty (I had to move the Radeon from slot 4 which I originally placed there for better air flow between cards because pciscan wouldn't find it on that slot)

- the jumpers on the Mediator are set as per the manual except oddly the Ram jumper had to be placed on 4MB rather than 8MB setting since my 1200T wouldn't boot up in the 8MB position eventhough the manual specifically states that if you use 8MB or more RAM in the turbo card you must use the 8MB jumper BUT then in the MedConfig installer it says it must be on the 4MB ???

- The Radeon is 5v and bought directly from Elbox so no issue there I suppose

Which version Picasso are you using, 2.0 ? There is a later Picasso96 2.1b and I've seen reference to a 2.1c alpha but not found that yet. I have a download link to 2.1b but I'm not going to post it here without permission from the Mods as I got burnt a while back for innocently posting an adf game link :shrug:

But it's relatively easy to find on Google. Search for "Picasso96-2_1b.lha"

Finally got it working on the 8mb jumper by talking out my SB and keeping the SpiderII on slot 4 and Radeon on slot 2!

Pci info found the 2 so maybe that's what was causing issues?? More testing later tonight

i had problems using a gfx card in the middle of two or more cards that use its memory,also and so, it either had to be first or last on the busboard,in my case last at the bottom for cooling if it was at the top a fan wont work properly.

Ya really happy I finally got my 1200T to boot up with the 8mb jumper on. Ran medconfig again and all seems ok hardware wise. Just tried installing the Picasso from the OS3.9 CD but no luck still seeing Village-72 card only?

Scanned all my drives, storage folder etc & can't find any Village file at all ??? Off to my brothers house for dinner and will test some more later tonight :-)

Appears Elbox guys are back from vacation as I just got an email to send over my MedReport.txt file. Will report back with hopefully good news :-)

@Klx300r When you are in Picass96Mode select the Project menu and save it as the default settings. I did that last night and the Radeon card appeared in the drop down.

I decided to reassemble my A1200 tower yesterday evening and I'm chuffed to bits that I think my Mediator is actually ok. :-D

So being the curious sort thought I'd have a go at installing Picasso96 and the Radeon card drivers etc. I got an issue when trying to run Picasso96Mode because it won't run in PAL HiRes,, I got it to run in PAL Hires Laced.

Then I got the same Issue Klx was getting with the Village64 displayed in the Settings section and when I clicked on "Attach Setting to" in the menu, "No Board" was displayed. So I thought why not try saving the Project, in the Project menu and I don't know if this made a difference but the Radeon card was then visible in the "Attach Setting to" menu. It displayed as "Board0: Radeon".I selected the Radeon card and it seems to have attached itself.

In the list of screenmodes in the lower part of the Picasso96Mode window the 1024x768 mode was already pre-selected. On the right hand side, 256 colours was pre-selected as the colour depth. I changed this to Hicolour in the drop down above it and pressed the Test button below. The Picasso96Mode screen changed to a garbled mess and I then got a multicolour test screen displayed through the Radeon DVI-D output. Magic!

If the Test screen is then clicked on, the Picasso96Mode window reappears in its previous mode via the Amigas normal video out connector.
I then Clicked on Save at the bottom of the Picasso96Mode window and it displays a message to save and reboot. After rebooting, the Amiga will start in its native resolution PAL Hires or PAL Hires Laced and all the Radeon screen modes that were previously displayed in Picasso96Mode show up in the System Prefs Screenmode window.

Selecting some of the Screenmodes from within prefs and testing so far does not display any picture. I might need to set up the suggested screenmodes that are detailed in the RadeonGuide to work with my LCD screen geometry.

I'll update here if/when I make any progress.

guys Elbox got back to me today and my pcinfo is picking up my Radeon 9200 256MB incorrectly? supposedly the Device ID should read $5962& device name: RV280 Radeon 9200. Trying now to mess with just me Radeon in the mediator inf different slots.

I've been playing around with my A1200 today, fix one thing and something else breaks.

- ATA3.driver locks up the system during boot up.
- My subway USB won't start although I can get it to work in another A1200.
- Then my DH1 partition gets some sort of block error I've never seen in 20 or so years of owning Amiga's and stays write protected.
- My Radeon is recognised one minute then after a reboot it only shows as an ATI device but not a Radeon.

We need a smiley for tearing ones hair out!:deadhorse

Time to leave it for a while and come back to it in a few days. :roll:

Boys finally a break through with my mediator woes! Quickly because it's bloody 4:30 in the morning here (holy crap)...basically I finally got my Radeon to show up properly in pciinfo by replacing the 2 Mach chips that Elbox gave me with old ones....even picked up my subway II fine...too tired to mess with Picasso tonight but what a relief at least to get to this point ...

Thats mad mate the new chips were for extra stuff to be recognised. Great it works now

John trust me I know ! Elbox was telling me it's a bad Radeon card or or loose connection somewhere so dismantled my whole bloody tower, reset every Chip and same thing, then when I thought I was just going to give up.....:-)

I'm getting there slowly but saying that, I think the whole mediator setup is a constant "always getting there" exercise. If it works today it won't tomorrow. I'm getting intermittent lockups with FastATA MkIII, then LoadMonDrvs. I was wondering if I needed to install special accelerator libs for the Blizzard 1230IV and SCSI interface. OS3.9 installed a 68040.library but I'm not sure if I need a 68030.library to match the blizzy.

I don't mean to be negative above but there are so many instabilities in the later Amiga add-ons and upgrades.

i dont know about anyone else,but im sure you dont need any special librarys for 020 and 030 card mate.

ok, back home & tired but of course had to go at my 1200T tonight before leaving on vacation for a week. So, boot OS3.9 up, go to Picasso prefs, voila first time I see the Radeon to attach..horray..save setting s and reboot...well what do ya know..Radeon not attached anymore :banghead::crying:

check pciinfo & radeon not being seen again properly....so shut down, take out Radeon leaving Mediator empty..boots up fine...shut down and reinstall Radeon...boots up and sees card fine again..run Medconfig and all fine, go to Picasso Prefs & set up an 800x600 screen mode to get started as per Johnim's excellent tutorial, save P96 prefs and reboot AND bloody hell the Mediator doesn't pick up the Radeon properly again:overactor:

SOOOO if I take out the Radeon, boot with no cards and then reinstall it all is fine but once i boot the 2nd time with the card in the Mediator everything goes wacky again?????? is something not saving properly in prefs or envarc???? is it possible something in my startup sequence is messing memory allocations up?? i noticed PoolMem pops up during boot up mind you with no errors.....ahh sooooo close

I was reading about different filesystems last night and discovered that the Mask chosen when adding a filesystem to a hard drive determines the memory area where DMA access to the disk is performed. So for my setup with a Zorro 2 Blizzard it would only use the first 16MB of fast memory. Zorro 3 scsi controllers (A4000 etc) can use any fast memory. Maybe there is some contention between DMA disk access on a scsi bus, the FastATA IDE controller and the graphics layers.

Dare I say my A1200 is booting every time now but I can't get the Radeon card to show in p96mode and the memory on the radeon is not being used although I've set it up using medconfig. I'll play for a little while longer then I might have a go at NetBSD.
