Game Gear problems
Hey gang,
I currently have my game gear in pieces due to its odd behaviour:
When powered on, garbage is on the screen and after 1-2 secs it cuts out.
Before, I noticed a sort of buzzing coming from the speakers, but thought not a thing of it...
I plan on replacing the caps on the sound and power boards, but my question is: what caps do i need? the caps installed have no ratings on them, (they also do not look corroded...)
-
Long time no see dreamy. :)
Have a look HERE it has a comprehensive capacitor list.
-
Yeah jaws, long time. I've been busy with college, and the finances and classes of it, I've been rarely online... Time to get those babies off then, and then fire it up (again). hopefully this machine doesn't blow up (I've had bad experiences w/ systems exploding....)
okay, I popped off all caps all right, now to order replacements....
-
Just make sure to replace them in the right polarity. ;)
-
Yeah, don't want another 3640 type job done now there...
-
sorry to threadomance, but I just learned my game gear is a VA5 version. This has a single IC but the capacitor layout is completely different. I removed all the caps already and now I don't know what goes where....

@dreamy
If it gets confusing just post a picture - there's plenty of tech-heads around here to help =)

Unfortunately my cam doesnt work atm... but I need a capacitor list for this board rev of Game Gear:
IC BD GG Main USA VA5 837-10766 Single IC
Capacitor lists in link posted by r0jaws do not correspond to names on board, which are:
C1
C33
C35
C41
C44
C36
C31
C37
C71
C47
C40
C43
C55
All capacitors were unmarked, with no way of telling what uF or voltage they were. I removed them all.
If I cannot figure this out, I may need to find someone willing to repair it, someone who is a trusted site member preferably...
-
D'oh... Always do caps one at a time to avoid this preferably, or make a key or take some good pics or something before removal...
Just had a scout around google for you, but unfortunately couldn't find anything useful. (A decent pic of the same board revision would have been very nice).
Maybe someone around here would be willing to open theirs and see if they have the same revision they could take pics of for you?

hmm, tricky. I'll check my GG later, but I'm not hopeful.
