Make a quick 10 euro!
Okiez, I have this a4k completely set up now (and discovered the rather nice THE - no more naughty Toolsdaemon intuition hacks!)...
I have everything sorted out, except for one small problem, more on that in a second.
Im sure it is a simple case of incorrect lib or something, but to anyone out there that can tell me how to fix it I will paypal 10 euros immediately to your paypal account!
Not bad for something that is probably a 5 minute fix.
Anywho, for anyone intereste, the problem is such:
If I right click on a volume and select Icon/Format, I get an intuition lock up. The system does not crash, but icons etc are no longer selectable (so the system is as good as crashed :)).
Right clicking on an icon and selecting anything else (delete, rename, information etc) is all fine.
Even running Format from the icon is fine...
And its not MagicMenu (shut it down via exchange and problem still persists).
Other than this, the system is now complete.... would be nice to be able to close the book on this last (small) problem....
Alternatively, I am happy to send (free of charge) any of the following Amiga spares to the solver of this problem. :)
A500/A600/A2000 - ks 3.1 Rom
A500/A600/A2000 - ks 3.9 Rom (with BB 3 installed)
A4000 ks 3.0 Roms
A3000 ks 1.4 Roms - not exactly sure why anyone would want these, but you never know :)
Seagate 2.5GB ST1 Micro (compactflash compatible) HD
IDE to Sata Adapter (new), compatible with Amiga
Kupke A2000 LED Floppy Track Display - nice unit, but I cannot use it as it will not fit when a cpu card is fitted (unless your cpu card uses the 68k socket)
So 10 euro or parts at the solvers disgression.
Think of it as a challenge. :)

I don't wan't youre money for this.
Just backup you're volumes and repartition and reformat with hdinstools to rule out disk problems.

If that does not help I would try with the original 3.1 rom.. (since you are not sure about 3.9 source and contents)

O and do not forget to check read/write bit

It would be a shame to earn money helping someone to fix its amiga.
It's funny though to see an Australian using the Euro currency. Why not USD or AUD?
About your problem, i think format should be a ROM instruction, so there might be a problem with your ROM.
What if you use format from a CLI?
-
Nah, I have no probs paying for someones time. As for the Euros - I assumed it would be the most commonly used/understood currency on Amibay! :)

Sys:System/Format works fine - just used it to format a usb stick in fat95.

Using Exchange is not the same as remming it out in your User-Startup.
Edit the file & to Rem any lines added by a program, shove a semi-colon in front of the read line.
Example:
;Begin Dopus
Assign Dopus: Work:
;end Dopus
....becomes....
;Begin Dopus
;Assign Dopus: Work:
;end Dopus
Then give her a cold boot.
I guess you're using 3.1ROM & OS3.9. - Is that with BB1 & BB2 installed?

Lol, hey Kin, I have been editing startup-sequences since the late 80s mate. :)
I just shutdown Magic Menu using exchange - which completely removes it vectors - as if it was never loaded in the first place.
I have nothing in my SS that would be causing the problem.... except PowerIcons, will edit that out and reboot just to check.
I have a feeling it has something to do with the icon.library as I just discovered that if I right click and format a standard 32 colour glow icon it works!
Just will not work on anything more than 32 colour icons.
I am running a custom KS 3.9 rom which appears to include BB 1, 2 and 3 (checked the resident libs/devices and they all check out with the version numbers of libs and devices in BB 3).
I am only running 256 colours icons (Kens Icons, not the png ones) which display WITHOUT PowerIcons.... but only in 32 colours. So they appear and look ok, but the shading etc is off (yes, tried BEST icons in Prefs/Workbench). As soon as I run PowerIcons they colours are perfect.
Is there an alternative to running PowerIcons to get 256 colours icons to show properly?
Anywho, another thing that leads me to think it is the icon.library, or something that patches it (ie PowerIcons) is that the only other thing that gives me trouble is RawBinfo! If I right click and select information on an icon, then drag another icon onto the image to change it, it works. The drag and dropped icon replaces the original, BUT when you go to save it says "icon not of required type" - yet it IS the same type of icon.
If I drag the original icon into Iconedit, then load the new icon image, it works and saves perfectly.
Weird huh?
Will disable PowerIcons, reboot and post results.

Nope. PowerIcons isnt the problem... :(

Is this the machine where you have the OS3.9 updates in ROM? (on your Deneb?)
Which version of workbench.library do you have, either in ROM or in LIBS: ?
Try the version from BB3, ensuring it exists at least in LIBS: but potentially also in your flashrom:

Workbench library resident in memory is 45.131.
---------- Post added at 20:57 ---------- Previous post was at 20:56 ----------
Just checked in my libs drawer - it is version 45.131 as well.
---------- Post added at 20:58 ---------- Previous post was at 20:57 ----------
From what I can tell, the ks 3.9 contains all boingbag (1 to 3 anywayz) updates.
---------- Post added at 20:59 ---------- Previous post was at 20:58 ----------
Wait a second! Isnt workbench.library loaded even if you have 3.9 in rom? I mean, wasnt it one of the external libs to the Amiga OS Rom Update since it would not fit (>512kb)?
If so, I might have the wrong workbench.library
---------- Post added at 21:18 ---------- Previous post was at 20:59 ----------
BoingBag 3 replaces the scsi.device... is this usually kept in rom? Or is it booted?
If booted, perhaps this is the problem? Should I revert back to BB2 scsi.device?
---------- Post added at 21:37 ---------- Previous post was at 21:18 ----------
I have a WILD update!
Ready for this?
Its not actually locking up when I right click on a volume and select FORMAT.... if you wait 27 seconds (I timed it) then the format requestor pops up! What more amazing....are you ready? Fast drop drops from 139MB....to 21MB!!!!
So, to recap, when I right click on a volume and select format the system is doing something in ram (no HD activity) which takes 27 seconds and uses 118MB of ram!!!
Something this outrageous MUST have an easy fix. :)

AmigaOS will boot as long as workbench.library is somewhere, be it in LIBS: or in ROM. If it's on disk, it'll override the one in ROM (not sure if a version test is done to pick the newer?). If it's nowhere, LoadWB will fail (I think).
Either way, I'd make sure workbench.library on disk is the newest - same with any other libraries that may also be on disk in LIBS:
A mechanism was put in place to allow workbench.library to be loaded from disk because (for example) in the case of the A4000T, there was no room left for workbench.library to reside in ROM (I think it's scsi driver was bigger than the others).
Have you actually edited your Kickstart, or are you just loading these libraries as modules on your Deneb? I'm thinking a potential problem you may have; KS3.1 with workbench.library 40.xx, then workbench.library loaded from Deneb, then workbench.library loaded from disk. I don't see why it'd be a problem, but you just never know.
Flip side, there could be bugs in these updates, or combinations of what's in ROM and on disk. Try booting without your Deneb updates, and re-add them one at a time.
SCSI.device is supposed to be in ROM. If there's no scsi.device in ROM at all, and you rely on the A4000's internal IDE to boot, you won't boot, basically :)
It's best to have this one's latest version in ROM as it's quite important, and you want it to be available as early as possible.
Speaking of drives, what's the MaxTransfer set to on each of your partitions in HDToolbox? For IDE devices, it should be 0x1fe00.
Edit:
Wow, weird :) Sounds like a freaky memory leak or something.
Do you have any patches that mess with memory allocation, like TLSFMem, the RAM-Handler update...? If so, can you revert them? I read that you had a potentially broken installation of MMULib in the other thread. Check for any remnants.

There are NO modules loaded in Deneb, and NO Modules loading via the start up sequence.
I have version 43.43 of the scsi.device in rom...
And if you read the above AMAZING development, I have more to add. If I click Cancel then the format requester disappears and I get back my 118MB ram... the system continues on fine.
Weird!!!
