What for Amiga OS 4?

So I have a stock A1200 with a 6gb hard drive and hope to get an accellorator soon so that I don't get my "out of ram" messages and get to play stuff again BUT?

What do I need to get Amiga oS 4 running? whats diferent in it compared to my standard kickstart 3?

At the moment I am using an original Amiga monitor - I have seen people using flat screens on them - whats the spec for these. I realy want to get my A1200 upto speed but love its form factor and dont want to change that.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

A PPC card for OS 4.1 For Classics (when it's released) wih 128mb RAM minimum
An Indivision AGA 1200 for running an LCD monitor

If you want to run OS4 or OS4.1 as Blankstare says you need a Blizzard PPC.

They come up on here from time to time but they can be very pricey (sadly cannot discuss exact numbers due to site price driving rules)

Also I'd suggest a Blizzard Vision RTG Graphics Card as even with an Indivision AGA OS4 is not going to be any fun without a 16/24bit workbench.

Or you can Tower your Amiga and get a Mediator PCI Busboard then you can use a PCI Graphics Card like the Radeon 9200 - 256mb of which you can add some of its Ram as System Memory.

When it comes to running OS above 3.9 on an A1200 you're in a whole new world....

So is there a huge diference hardware requirement side between 3.9 and 4.0?

I realy dont like the idea of putting my A1200 innards into a tower as the small form is what I love so much even after all these years.

I would just love a nicer GUI than the one my amiga as at present, something a bit more "pc" like. I can build a computer with my eyes shut and stick software on all day, from windows to linux but changing an amiga - I'm well lost.

In that case check out the Classic Workbench packs, they give OS3.x a nice updated feel with all the apps and programs you could ever need.

They are very easy to use and everything you need as I say is built in like music players, archive managers, file manager(Dopus) etc.

With a stanard 4mb/8mb upgrade I'd suggest the CWB Lite pack, if you get a Blizzard another Acclelerator that takes more Ram (16mb+) then look at the Full/ADV/ADV SP) packs or even OS3.9 :cool:

Thanks for the info, at least I know what Im aiming for now.Gonna list some of my retro stuff on here later to get some funds together for my upgrades as this way the missus wont moan (makes more room in the loft LOL).

Note that OS4.x is PPC ONLY. OS3.9 is/was the lastet version of Motorola 680x0 Amiga OS.

I think, but don't know, you will need Kick 3.1, as even OS 3.9 is based on KS3.1 and KS3.0 won't function.

Must have read my mind, was just reading on wikipedia that 3.9 needs the 3.1 rom. Not sure if mine has the 3.0 rom installed? as I have seen 3.1 roms for sale before.

OK, so have a look at your ROMs.

When your Amiga starts and you have no HDD, you will see a bootup screen. There, the version number is on scree.

If you have a HDD you can also look at the Workbench menu - hold right mouse button, goto the left main menu of WB and klick "info" or something similar - you then see a version number of WORKBENCH and KICKSTART. It's only a internal number.
