Powerless NES
Hey guys I recently bought a new power adaptor for my NES. To my disappointment there is no power to the console with the new adaptor.
I was curious if anyone could shed some light on a fix? Anyone dealt with NES' that have decided to just not turn on? The NES definately worked about 6 months or so ago I'm hoping theres a quick fix... bit of soldering perhaps...

Hello,
SNES and NES have same PSU, so you can interchange them.
If PSU is Ok and NES not working, it maybe just have a little damage like fuse, solder joints by power connector, also check on/off switch. It's good NES is openable, it has normal screws instead SNES.
Hope that helps. Maybe try the SNES PSU but have a look at the voltages first, not to fire up SNES too.

Not so much need to check voltages as snes has a voltage regulator. It will happily accept up to about 35v! :P
This is incidentally what I'd probably check first to see if the regulator is gone.
If it is, replace with an lm7805 (very cheap)

Hey guys, Just opened up the NES. No sign of swollen capacitors or anything having blown. I gave it a good cleaning while it was open too but still nothing.
As for the PSU, yea the NES and SNES take the exact same adaptor (9v, 1.3A). Dispite the adaptor being fine there is no light on the NES and no picture or any response from the TV atall. It's as if theres some kind of interruption on the powerline, but I cannot pinpoint it.
I also cannot see any obvious fuse to replace inside it anywhere. It may be a little beyond my skill level... :huh:

Best way to check is put it to your ear and if you can hear a buzz/hum then chances are, your Power Supply is fine. :)

erm, he has 2 PSU and both (?) work on SNES?
have tested the NES on both PSUs?
If PSU on NES is OK, it will be OK on NES too. I think its an AC PSU, right (I have mine not by hand). So, polarity etc doesn't matter as on DC does. Internally NES makes DC, you could also hook up internal DC PSU, if something is wrong with ac-dc part.
BUT: I have to say I'm not that in NES, maybe I'm wrong, but I think it's AC PSU, so can you check this for me? I have 2 NES, both OK. Sadly, I only at this time have a SNES replacement PCB, no NES one :(.

Hmm, there is a feint hum coming fom the unit if i press my ear against it but curiously my multimeter wont read anything from the tip. Now I'm not the most experienced when it comes to multimeters, but I'm reading voltages with it fine for all the DC adaptors I have laying around. When changing the multimeter to the AC setting and testing the NES adaptor, nothing... :( Might be the adaptor afterall.

You have 2 PSU? True or false?
PSU are original Nintendo?
Both the same voltages etc?
Does BOTH work on your _S_NES? Or one only? Or none at all?
But no one works on your NES?
If the answer is
true, true, true, both work on Snes, no on NES, then your NES is faulty.

Yes it is an original nintendo one and was thought to be working fine until i tried it on the NES earlier...
It is the exact same voltage required by both NES and SNES consoles (9v @ 1.3A)...
Unfortunately only the NES is here for testing. The adaptor had previously been fine on a SNES which I no longer have. I am waiting on another SNES which is in the post as we speak as I gave my old one away but kept the Power adaptor as it wasnt needed by my friend.
Oh and yea theyre AC PSUs...

ok, that makes things clear, thanks. I understood it false, I thought you have 2 PSU or you have a snes. So sry for that.
But you can also buy another PSU. NES is I think very robust. On Nintendo PSU I have had no problems, but with sega megadrives I had 2 non working :(
Hope you get a PSU or working SNES/NES soon.
