Help this clot wire up a fan...

Ok, simple job for most of out there but when it comes to modding stuff that isn't built to fit I'm usless :whistle:

I want to fit this fan to my BVision:

Which wires do I wire up to the floppy cable? I have a spare floppy cable I can cut. I plan to solder the wires together and use that cool shrinking black tubing for a tidy job :)

Unless anyone has better advice? As I say I'm a novice when it comes to hacking, I'd love a fan that just plugged in via an adapter of sorts, but hey its time to take the plunge and hack away!

What would you guys suggest for mounting the Heatsink? I've got a tube of thermal compound here and was thinking a few blobs of hot glue?

I did look at those thermal transfer pads but they are too permanent, I'd never get it off again without damage to the Permedia :butcher

Check the attached image my friend and connect the appropriate cables from the Floppy Connector according to the voltage you want for your fan :)

I think I have one of these electrical cable blocks in my Tool Box, better to use that then solder wires I guess?

I think you could use some splitters, I don't have time to dig but look on ebay on molex.

Ahhhh, now you are talking to the right fellow - I have been overclocking since my first 386. :)

Firstly DO NOT USE HOT GLUE to hold on the heatsink, it will fail. Hot glue softens as it heats up, it does not stick well to begin with and is not suitable for thie job.

Secondly, those stick on thermal pads are RUBBISH, they do not conduct away the heat anywhere near as good as a good thermal heat transfer compound. Idealy, get some Arctic Silver (the best) or some of that white goop (cannot remember its technical name, I think its just called heat transfer compound).

Make sure your heatsink and top of cpu are very clean, put a very thin layer (.1mm) thick of transfer compound on both surfaces and then push together. Rotate to and fro 20 degrees gently with a small amount of pressure to make sure there is no air voids between the two surfaces.

Then make sure heatsink is aligned well and gently clean off any residue paste that squeezed out the sides (there should be VERY little if you put on the right amount).

Then take some 5 minute araldite. Mix well and place a small neat blob on each of the four corners where the heatsink lines up with the cpu.

Allow to dry.

Araldite is strong, is not effected by heat AND only using it in the four corners means if you ever do have to remove the heatsink, a little filing with a nail file and the heatsink will snap free if you rotate it gently.

Oh, and drawing power from the floppy connector is ok in this circumstance (low wattage draw on a small fan like that) but beware, if you try to draw too much power you will actually burn out the tracks on your a1200 mb which deliver power from the psu input to the floppy connector input.

I can't fault the advice given. For higher wattages, I would tap a wire onto the 5v and 0v (GND) where the power supply connector solders underneath to the main board, so you effectively bypass the tracks that are the weak point Abbraxious mentions.

I'll invest in the Arctic Silver - I just have some unbranded stuff here that came with a heatsink.

And grab some araldite from Halfrauds :)

Only planning to run this fan for now, otherwise everything is fine. The 060 and PPC are not overheating at all.

Will probably make a slot in the back of the case and mount a Voodoo Exhaust Fan since floppy drive is back in.

Other then that she's all good, had her running even without and cooling on the Permedia and its running nice but want a fan on that fella as its way too hot to touch!

If you are going to keep this beast in a desktop case (which is always nice), I would strongly suggest you do a trapdoor mod (neatly cut out a large square section i nthe middle of the trapdoor then neatly glue a piece of fine aluminium mesh on the inside) - they look roooolly cool (kind like the front spoiler mesh on a hotted up vehicle) and will help keeping air flow up. When I had an 040 PPC card in my a1200 I did this and I also fit 3 x 40mm slimline fans (about $4 each on ebay) to the inside of the top plastic cover (just above the keyboard where the slotted grill is). These fans should be set to SUCK air into the case, the air then flows over your cpu card and out the trapdoor via the mesh mod.
