Yet more awsome work from the d0pest fish on the block :thumbsup:
Great stuff, I'm sure taj'll be delighted :cool:
Steve.
@tokyo & Steve: Thankyou, I hope so! :nod:
Oh, I almost forgot:
I insulated the battery board, and neatened up its edges:

OH MY GOD!!!!!! :bowdown::bowdown::bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:
Im a gas bag, i really do talk a lot of shite, but Im speechless:)
I want Dale to be voted Amibayer of the Year!:thumbsup:
@ Dale
I just sent you an email mate :)
This thread is amazing! Kudos to Steve to getting it started and bringing out a real star of the community :thumbsup:
Cant wait to paly around with my "new" A4000! Thanks for the little extras youve done too Dale, I didnt actually notice the audio port was crooked! LOL! :oops:
Rkauer is wondering if Dale can sell him the upgraded chip, as sending one A3640 abroad is a real nightmare of indecent postal price...
Yet another truly impressive thread.
@ D0pefish
Great work again Dale & a real credit to your skills.
@ Taj
Luv it baby. :D
Charlie
d0pefish - you take perfectionism to a new level! :wooha:
and there was I thinking my OCDness with network data cabinets was bad! :D
Cheers guys! :)
@rkauer - I have a chip here with the 3.2 upgrade logic programmed onto it and a sticker applied, just like the one I used on Taj's. :)
I was going to use it on mine, but I can wait - when my programmer arrives I can make another one in 5 minutes :) (I don't even use my A3640, so seriously, it's fine :))
When I get back home tomorrow I'll talk to you - is that ok mate?:thumbsup:
---------- Post added at 17:05 ---------- Previous post was at 17:01 ----------
Hahaha :oops: thanks man, seriously - too kind! :D
I'm actually setting up a network at work right now, it's the whole point of the business trip :) Out on the isle of Wight doing the network for a company we acquired. Very long day - been up since 4AM :( But we have accomplished a lot, and I'm very happy :thumbsup:
rkauer: PM sent my friend :)
Well, after 2 days of being unplugged, I return from my work trip to find the A4000 has kept perfect time with the battery :D
It's now all packed up with the A3640 and the original parts, and will be on its way to Taj tomorrow, hopefully! :thumbsup:
Cheers!
Taj, what d0pefish has failed to tell you is that he has put your 4000 et al on a pallet for extreme hardcore packaging :D
Example (little box on big pallet);

@ Paul
:rofl3
@ Dale
Thanks again mate :thumbsup: I got your email last night, will send you a reply tonight :)
Hi All!
Dale sent the A4000 motherboard back last week and I got it on Monday :thumbsup:
Over a couple of nights this week and today I have unpacked it and rebuilt the A4000 so I have attached some pics for all to see.
Firstly, what an amazing (and professional) job Dale has done! I am truly grateful to you and humbled at the true community spirit shown to me :) Ive said it before and Ill say it again, far FAR too often people talk of an "Amiga community" but it is rarely seen in my opinion but Dale has restored my faith in believing it exists (and indeed Amibay deserves credit too as its not like troll.org and the spirit oozes through because of that).
Now, onto my experience with the A4000 :D
Could Amiga cases BE more awkward :blink: I guess its just the way of the times back then as PC cases werent much better back in the day, lol.
The A4000 hacked my hands at every turn :( And for some reason, the CV64/3d took all the force I could must to push home, and even then it didnt just slide in, it wanted pushing in bit by bit. Now I love a tight girl as much as the next guy but this is taking the ****! And how the heck does anyone get that damn lid on and off with ease??? :thumbsdown:
The X-Surf was not as tight but it doesnt line up with the slots :blink: Some rejigging eventually got it in.
The ScanMagic installed like a dream, just slot it on and its done. FYI, this thing needs a 2 prong jumper clip type power connector connecting to it which the A4000 doesnt have so I chopped one off my A1200T which this came from and fudged it into one of the molex connectors.
So all was back together, I only have a basic 3.9 install on the HDD so I fired it up............. IT LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:bowdown::bowdown::bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:
Now the bad news, despite trying every SIMM that I have, I keep getting random crashes on boot up :blink: (see last pic, its usually either that prog or Iprefs, sometimes other progs but mainly these ones) I cant think what it is, Im guessing the RAM because Dale said his worked OK but my (old) RAM didnt. Ive put each SIMM in individually, some still made it crash so I discarded those, but even the ones that work by themselves OK crash the machine on occasion and dont work well with the others that (supposedly) work well by themselves. Im confused :blink:
FYI, once its booted its pretty much stable, I only recall one crash so far (with PPaint) but its stable otherwise.
Should I just buy some new SIMMs?
Once again, I cannot thank you enough Dale, awesome work dude, you ever want a proper curry just stop by Bradford mate and we'll go over to the folks and say to my mum "oi! *****, gimme some grub! :D"....probably best I say that:rofl3
:bowdown:
SWEET! :thumbsup2::thumbsup2::bowdown::bowdown::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
This is AWESOME, Taj, thanks for the ace pictures!
I'm so pleased it all arrived safely and you got it built up again alright! :D
Sorry to hear you're wrestling with some crashing issues :( - I think you're right and we may still have to set you up with some good RAM.
Can you tell us any model/part numbers on the RAM sticks you use, mate?
I can see at least two of your SIMMs seem to have 9 chips, which normally implies they are parity SIMMs. This might be one reason, another could be that they are EDO SIMMs - as mentioned by rkauer in this post here these kinds are not compatible with the Amiga.
I can recommend the ones I use, which are Hyundai HYM532100AM-70 - 4-Megabyte, Non-parity, Fast Page Mode, 70ns sticks.
If you do a quick seach on t'other bay for this model, they're there, and quite cheap! :)
The rest of the machine though - beautiful, mate - well done :) That Cybervision is a great card :nod:
I'm cracking a celebratory beer as we speak, and hell - next time I drive up the country I think I may just have to take you up on that very kind offer - I do love a good curry! :D
I was thinking of making a nice madras tonight! :)
Thanks Taj! :thumbsup:
Hey Taj,
Thanks for sharing the pics, glad you have your A4000 back safe :thumbsup:
Sorry to hear of the Ram issues, hope you can find some good ram soon, I'm sure someone here will be able to help you out if you post a wanted thread :)
Dale is indeed a great guy and a credit to the community :bowdown:
Steve.
Cool :D
I need advice on how to start soldering with SMD. I can desolder, but need to step up to the reattachment :D
I just tried installing 3.9 on another HD, still got the same crashing behavior. The thing I find strange is that it is stable if it boots up OK :blink:
Anyhoo, I got a couple of 4Meg SIMMs from evilbay last night, exactly the same as Dales so hopefully Ill see a change when I put them in :)
It's probably because the memory's contents are all wrong / not what the program in question (that's causing the crash) is expecting, due to it being incompatible, so it'll be trying to execute garbage :)
Anything that doesn't crash is probably just luck :lol:
Hopefully it should all just disappear when you get your new RAM, and if it works, you can add another pair the same. :thumbsup:
@chiark:
For these capacitors, and for things that have reasonably sized legs/spacing, I just use a fine-tipped soldering iron bit and a medium-to-low temperature. I use a flux pen to go over the pads and the legs of the components, which also has a little bit of tack and holds the component in place.
Then I heat one leg and pad with the fine tip, and feed in a tiny bit of solder. The flux causes it to smoothly flow all around the leg and pad, and creates a perfect joint. If the component goes a little crooked, now's the time to heat the leg back up and readjust it, then you do the other leg - job done :)
As for ICs and things with many fine legs, you can employ SMD solder paste and use the hot air tool, Anthony Hoffman has some really good guides here :)
Thanks for shareing Tajmaster, I like the battery, nice
think your self lucky the CV64/3d did`t have the scandoubler on it would have been 4x as hard to install LOL
Sorry for bumping this, but where did you get those nice looking RAM sockets? I'm going to do this job on my A4000 too. Amigakit.eu seems to not be selling RAM sockets anymore.
EDIT: :Doh:
I am just too dumb to browse through the AmigaKit categories. Found some nice sockets!
1x energy loaded 8bitbubsy + good tools + 3 hours =
http://16-bits.org/i/a4000_desolder_job.jpg (clicky)
Ready for brand new RAM sockets and new SMD capacitors.
Not a single broken trace or lifted/broken pad. I'm not that bad, am I? :lol:
