Best workbench for A600 with ACA630

Hey there!

It would be interesting to hear from the people who bought an ACA630 what kind of workbench setup you went with.

I've tried a few now and I'm still not really happy, Classic Workbench ADV SP IMHO in 16 Colours runs a little too slow, its bordering annoying waiting for the icons for example and slow screen refreshing.

CWB ADV runs very quick in 8 Colours and looks nice enough but the icons are very large so I'd like to run that at a higher resolution, but alas there is no 800x600 driver for the Indivision ECS (maybe one day?) :coffee:

So my last option I'm going to try is CWB Full running in 4 Colours via the HighGFX 1024x768 mode, from my tests lowering the colours in CWB ADV it should be pretty slick.

Oh and I'm also going to try the CWB OS3.5 pack, just to see how that runs. Will report back on this and the above...

Be great though to hear other opinions.

Haha, I had the same. I am running 3.1 currently with dblpal or hd730 high res laced at 16 colors with 8 color icon palette. I have reasonable performance - a lot of work yet, and not finished.

I think the ecs is not worth upgrading to 030.

I found a nice compromise Steve. A custom install of ClassicWb 68k in 8 colours with magic wb etc. Looks very nice - no harsh dithering etc, everything matches and it moves at Warp factor 9. :)

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think IndyECS is like Indy1200.... only two of the four MBytes available on the board are used.

In anyway is an ECS system, 030/25..... not very fast and less graphics capabilities......

Hopefully one day we see a 256colour 800x600 driver for the Indi ECS, that will change everything :bowdown:

In the mean time I like your workbench, it looks good. Will give me some food for thought as will yours abraXXious.

I was thinking along the lines of a basic CWB (maybe I'll pick the CWB Lite Pack) and run in HighGFX. I think the problem is I'm too used to the screen space in RTG :)

640x512 just seems so small, even with maximum overscan, I managed to get quite a good setup with the CWB ADV pack using the border blanker included with CWB, I just stuck it in the startup sequence and it blacks them out on boot which is pretty awesome.

CWB is indeed a time saver, I started with that, but the icons where to slow for me.

Let's hope ecs is a bit more strechable.

I'm also trying some things these days about different setups and such...
Pure WB3.1 is ultra fast but aesthetically is not so nice for my taste.
A ClassicWB68k edition with the addition of MagicWB like abraXXious's setup is indeed a lovely and at the same time, fast by all means.

Indeed, OS3.9 and ClassicWB3.9 despite being really cool, are not so responsive as you would love to be (comparing to an A1200 with an 030).
Apart from that, if you change to 16 colors and use FP/VP and the awesome 16color palette by Rebel/Cammy more slowness occurs but not so great comparing to pure 3.9 @ 8colors.

Tonight I'll gief a try @ a ClassicWB3.5 to have a test, since with a talk I had with Bloodwych, he told me it's a lot more responsive.

I'll report back with my findings.

I'm going to try 3.5 a little later, I justed tested Classic Workbench Lite and this runs very slick in 4 colour HighGFX.

I need to work on the palette as its usually 8 colour however seems like I could work with this as I do like having plenty of workspace on my bench lol.

I've got Classic WB 3.1 Full on it, but haven't done much with it yet.
