Help me choose an accelerator for my new 1200...

My 1200 is on its way, and I'm obviously going to put some form of expansion in it.

Question is, what is enough power?

Of course, a 1260 would be lovely but I'd struggle to justify the expenditure needed.

At the other end is the 1230/28, which gives me 64MB RAM, relocatable kickstart and enough power to play almost anything.

What couldn't I do if I went for the 1230/28? I guess some of the latest demos won't work, however that's not too much of a worry. It'd be nice to see them, but I don't attach hundreds of pounds to seeing those demos :)

Is there any way of replacing the processor on the 1230/28 and upping the clock frequency?

(I'm aware there's no MMU or FPU on the 1230/28 - I occasionally run Enforcer).

At twice the price of the 1230/28, it seems the only benefit is a little speed and the MMU.

Besides, that wouldn't let me run the 060 specific demos and I suspect I could find a 1260 for not much more than the 1230/56.

Or am I wrong on that? :D

Do you intend on sticking with OS3.x or 'when' it finally arrives, do you want to run OS4.1 for Classics?

FYI ... Vesalia has a 1230/28 that has had the CPU changed from the usual EC '030 to the full blown MC (With MMU) '030 in stock

I'll probably stick with 3.x... Besides, on a 1200 the graphics will be a limiting factor for anything fancier.

The 4.1 will need a powerPC surely, and those command cash that I really couldn't think of justifying...

I did have a 1230 that I sold. Ho hum :D

Lol, I'll try to avoid the price driving :whistle:

But you'll be looking at adding a fair bit to the price of an ACA1230/56 to get an 060 and as you say for the cost vs what extra you can do it may not be woth it for you.

The ACA1230/28 is perfect for gaming, so if thats what you'll be doing on the A1200 then go for that as the price is awesome. If I were building a gaming machine it would be that or a 2nd hand Bliz 1230MkIV.

You could always swap out the CPU on the ACA as well for one with MMU so bare that in mind should you find stuff you can't run.

Now the 060 stuff you'll be missing is high end emulation like running Shapreshifter in 256colour (you'll be ok on the ACA in Mono)

060 Demo's of course and your top end 3D games like Quake. You'll be ok with Doom on the ACA at about 7fps which is playable and games like Gloom, etc will run but not ultra smooth like the 060.

Then there's workbench, if you're happy with a basic Classic Workbench then again the ACA is great and will be very nippy.

If you want a pimped out bench with all the bells then you're going to want an 060 to get the most out of it.

I forgot to mention though also, no FPU on the ACA, not depends if you'll be doing anything that requires one. Not much on the 030 gaming wise uses it anyway but I'm sure there are some apps that do.

I went from a 1240/40Mhz to a ACA1230/28 and I'm happy, slower cpu but twice the IDE transfer rate.

Any apps that need real processing power are best off in an emulated environment, I'm afraid to say :( .

I still have my Warp Engine 4040 in the 4000 should I need anything like that. I'd love to put some form of 060 in the 4000, but they seem insanely rare!
