AmigaSys 4 problem
Hey all.
I usually use my own custom 3.9 install, or if Im being lazy, ClassicWB... but I thought I might install AmigaSys 4 on a system just for variety.
The system in question is an A1200 with Blizzard Mk IV 030/50 and 64 mb fast. The A1200 presently has 3.0 roms (soon to be 3.1).
I formatted the HD (SFS) and copied AmigaSys 4 across. I then booted and went through the automated install procedure. When prompted, I inserted a WB 3.1 disk... and then an Extras 3.1 disk.
Both disks were found as "valid" and installation went smoothly.
Once installed, system rebooted and booted to Amiga Sys 4 perfectly.
BUT, roughly half the apps cause task exceptions/crashes. For instance, FileMaster, MCPPrefs (yet MCP appears to run fine in the background), AmigaAMP etc etc etc.
Im wondering if choosing WB 3.1 disks with KS 3.0 roms is the problem? Although, I cannot see why.
Anywho, anyone else encounter the same problem? Any ideas on a fix? Or if someone has a 3.0 A1200 with an 030.... dont suppose you could do an install and see if the same problem occurs?

Hi
In theory, WB 3.1 works 100% with 3.0 ROMS.
What options you're selected when installing AmigaSYS? Icons, CPU, .....
SFS? You copied the SmartFileSystem to L: after setup?
Check your MCP Prefs & try changing?
If possible, this evening I mount my A1200 with AmigaSYS... Maybe this can help you more accurate.
Best wishes

Thanks for the help MerlinkV - you're a top fellow! :)
I installed using wb 3.1 disk, and extras 3.1 disk. I selected the Blizzard Mk IV (030)option when it was presently. I chose NewIcons and english.... and thats about all the choices you have when installing.
Let me know if you think of anything, thanks again,
Steven.

Hi Steven
Glad to help you a bit my friend :)
So I think Setup procedure is OK.
Just to know... Do you have IndyAGA installed? IDEFix or Buffered IDE interfaces?
Seems to be an MCP/FBlit issue. Some parameters need to be changed after setup.
This evening/night I will contact you again with my A1200 running..... :)
Best wishes
Pablo

Recommended: 68030/25 Mhz, 8 MB ram, 100 MB HD or CF-IDE.
Maximum: 68040/40 Mhz or 68060/50, + PPC, 16/32/64 MB Ram, 120 MB HD or CF-IDE.
AmigaSYS AGA, runs very fast on a 68020@14 mhz + 4 MB Fast ram Amiga too!
Optimalized support: 68020, 030, 040, 060.
AmigaSYS AGA supported Operation Systems:
- Amiga Os 3.0 (1 or 2 disks).
- Amiga Os 3.1 (1 or 2 disks).
- Amiga Os 3.1 Amiga Forever (1 or 2 disks). Buy now!

AmigaOS 3.9 needs Kickstart 3.1, 8 MB fast ram and a faster CPU (at least 030/50 or 040/40 recommended).
Some programs in the system are needs FPU support. If you don't have an FPU (co-processor), then the program won't run or it will drop an error message. The amount of these programs is low, only 3 are there of them.
You'll need the original Commodore or Amiga Forever Workbench and Extras disks when installing.

I cannot find my expansion card in the supported hardware list, what should i do?
At every CPU type there is an option: Other Amiga 1200 card, Other Amiga 4000 card. If you cannot find your card type in the list, then always use the Other Amiga.... option. Then the system will install the correct optimalisations, but not the card.
Will the system work properly in this case?
The system will work properly, a lot of memory card/turbo card does not have a driver, so you stick it into the computer and it won't require anything. If you have an install disk for your expansion card and you don't find it in the list, then you're recommended to install it. These are recommended at the 68040/68060 cards to reach the peak performance on your Amiga.

Thanks guys..... but I have found the problem... and when I tell you, you will probably throw a large shoe at me.... possibly a wing tip or nazi jack boot..... :)
I had the Max Transfer setting on my HD set to the default value, which was causing any file over a certain size to be corrupted. It was just blind luck that all the start up files were ok, but most apps were not.
I fixed the max trasnfer setting, formatted and reinstalled - all good now.
Oh and a free tip for anyone using AmigaSys 4 - the backdrop is HIDEOUS!!! There is a nice, but simple 24 bit backdrop available.... which looks amazingly good reduced to 16 colours with dithering. If anyone wants a copy just ask. :)
Oh, and I have some 3.1 roms coming (thanks Nathan), but until then I wanted to Blizkick some 3.1 roms.... but no rom I can find works. Even a rom I used Kickgrab to acquire does not work.
Anyone have a working (with Blizkick) A1200 3.1 rom image?

Hi Steven,
Great news my firnd. My congrats
One question. What value you set at Max Transfer?
Thanks

I've found the AmigaSys AGA to freeze up using both my A1200 and A4000, system runs smoothly with regular install using CF card, and in general is quite slow on these.
I haven't tested it on SCSI drives but would think there would be a significant performance boost.
and just to confirm pictures etc. I've had it running on Rom3.0.
cheers :-)

Hi Steven.
If possible. I want the Backdrop at 24 bit. :)
