I have been looking for a IDE controller for the C64/128 IDE64 looks good but cost is a bit much,the I found this one http://www.djupdal.org/asbjoern/cbm/iecata/ but it has not been updated since 2002 and lacks support for USR and REL files but has all the files and info on making one..
Now i'm not good at creating this stuff but I can assemble kits..
I hope this can get something started..

SD is the prefered cheap storage for the 8bit commodores.

For ultimate compatibilty with old software there is the 1541 Ultimate II.
(Currently a preorder.)
Good luck, I use and love my sd based drives. (I use the uiec from Jim Brain, you can find his online store with a google search, the product is called the uiec/sd).

I was about to post the same as Dabone, I have the Ultimate II. It is not perfect but it runs all the software I like :D To small memory card for the II device:(
I remember loosing phone cards because of my mother and new girlfriends :D (long time ago)
But you can keep a real floppy at device 9 and have at 8 the emulator

I have taken the liberty to download the IEC2ATA project and have costed the manufacture of the PCB and components.
In Kit form you would be looking at $35 - $45 per unit, when you include all levies such as taxes and postage.
Its a smarty bit of kit though and one I would love to have a crack at if ever I get done with my projects - I have a sneaky suspicion that Yorkie4 may well start bugging me for help with one of these.
Anyway - connectors and discretes aside the main costs will be
$197 for 20x PCB's (futurlec.com)
$150 for 20x AVR 8515 (farnell)
$150 for 20x 32k SRAM (farnell)*
$65 for sundry capacitors, resistors, connectors and crystals (farnell)
$502 total = $25 ea per board
*finding the right 32K SRAM will be difficult, I managed to find an SMD equivilent, but for this to work you would need to revise the PCB, not that it would be difficult, but since the SMD AVR 8515 is in fact cheaper than the DIP varient you might as well as SMD the lot and develop a smaller board - thus reducing the cost a lot more.

That looks like a pretty old interface that doesn't have any ongoing support. The uiec was also available in an IDE version with support for larger (> 137GB) harddrives.
I ran a centipede 128 bbs off the sd version for a while the rel worked for it. It also supports usr files just fine.
Jim Brain no longer has the IDE versions for sale, maybe doing a run of those?

Hmm,now i made next bath sd2iec, simply, cheaper,working with sd card.
I mainly what a HD for the file area so USR and REL file types don't matter any more this just seems a cheaper way to go 25 to 50 bucks is better then 160..
Plus in kit form would be fun to do also.
