mouse question

I'm not technical at all, I'm trying to get my sculpture which has at the centre an amiga500 going. Everything is fine except the mouses I have. So I bought another one the oother day it looks brand new but the ball section doesnt work. the buttons do though. Can anyone tell me if it's possible to fix this? I rang the local computer repair place who said they didn't do mice. Is that because they are hard to fix?
This might seem silly like why not buy a new one but it's the look of it, I want the kind of oval fronted one. My optical mouse works fine by the way so I know it's not the computer.
Also, both of the Amiga 500s are working fine. Are they absolutely bound to have a battery disaster?
Any help about the mouse would be appreciated I don't know whether to return it or try to get it fixed. Sorry if it's a stupid question.

A standard 500 doesn't have a battery in it unless you've got a memory expansion in the trap door underneath. These sometimes have a battery on them.

A 500+ has a battery fitted.

Any battery will need checking for leakage.

As for your mouse - is it clean - does it move on screen at all?

It says Battery backed up - clock not found when I turn it on but I think it always did. I can turn it on without fear now:)

No, the cursor stays up in the left corner and won't move - actually it vibrates a little if I move the ball, but the right button shifts the top bar to 'workbench/disk/special' menu.
It's clean and appears to be brand new- came in a new old box. There's no fluff inside.

If you take the ball out and move the rollers does the pointer move?

If not it sounds like it could be a duff mouse :thumbsdown:

P.S. does the original mouse (the one you don't like) work?

The two original ones, one's a tank one, the other I'm trying to replace, dont work. One the buttons, the other the cursor.
I have one which does work fully but it's delicate looking around where the cord comes out and I want to get this all packed up in good working order.
Maybe I will have to be satisfied with having the one slightly ropey one for now but I'd prefer it to be more robust.

maybe you could get a mouse adapter and use any optical ps2 mice as i do

Thanks John, well I do have a nice optical mouse working perfectly. But the sculpture has the mouse sitting on a text, when you roll the mouse it rolls through a sequence loaded in elan performer of images of my eyes so you can make me look at you and this is the central part of the whole thing. So the optical mouse doesn't work as it needs it's own reflective tablet and doesn't work on the text.
I think I will just keep looking for a backup second mouse.

Here is one unfortunately the part most Amiga people like to see is at the back!
The second is the 'still' frame, I wanted to find a way to have it always return to that image but never did get there.
