Merlin's Cookery Programme......for GPUs....
Hi all,
Last weekend, I had a little cookery thing going on at Chez Merlin. I had a number of graphics cards in various states of distress, ranging from DOA to having artifacts at the bootup screen and RAM errors. This wouldn't do at all, so.....
Saturday afternoon was devoted to a stripping session (no, not THAT kind of stripping!) in that I dismanted the various cards' heat sinks, mounting brackets and in some cases power sockets, as some plastics don't like the oven.
I pre-heated our fan-assisted oven to around 190-200C and put the cards as level and flat as I could get them onto some large aluminium serving trays that were left over from last Christmas (Shh! don't let 'er indoors know :shhh:).
I put the cards in and timed then for ten minutes, then turned the heat off and cracked the oven door open slightly, allowing the cards to completely cool before moving them. They were assembled with some new Arctic Silver thermal compound.
I now have a working Nvidia 8800GTX and a 7300GT, along with a Radeon X600 and 9800SE. They have all passed the bios screen test and will be built into a test rig over the next weekend, where they will all get a test in a Windows environment and stress tested.
All in all, not a bad day's work......
Has anyone else been doing this kind of cookery, apart from XBox 360 and PS3 motherboards....??
