Deneb Question

Hi All,

I've just finished setting up a Deneb USB card, which I think is a great piece of technology for classic Amiga's.

My problem is with the Poseidon USB stack not auto-starting correctly. I read that there is an issue with the install script that incorrectly configures the Deneb to start in Z2 mode rather than Z3PIO mode. I've gone into Poseidon and and deleted the Z2 USB device out of the list of devices and restarted the stack at which time it sees my USB device.

I've then saved the configuration but each time I reboot my Amiga my USB device is not mounted. I need to go back into Poseidon and click restart and then it all works great so I must be doing something wrong. I have confirmed that the ENVARC line is contained in my user start up sequence.

If I look through the error log and can see that it is still attempting to configure the Deneb as a Z2 device which causes it to fail.

Can anybody help?

It might be your accelerator, I recall having to start the stack manually with the 3640. There's a blurb about this under the support link at e3b.

After changing the device to PIO within Trident, click "save" to save the changes in the psdstackloader file. Then reflash the DENEB with Luciferin - otherwise, the DENEB will start with the old settings every reboot (which might be starting the Z2 controller), until psdstackloader is called again while booting.

I hope that made sense. The installer just adds a line to call psdstackloader, which contains all the saved settings in Trident. I think part of your problem is that the psdstackloader in your flashrom isn't the same as the one in envarc: that's called during bootup.

I had almost the same problem: after boot, I needed to go back into Poseidon + click "restart" and then it all works great but Poseidon software crashed immediatly (without any further problems for the detection of USB devices).
What's exactly your material? A2000/A3000/A4000? Expansions cards? Buster07-09 or 11?

DENEB => All config jumpers opened

FlashROM => Better if you flash it with the denebpiousb.device (this is the Z3PIO)

PsdStackloader => Command line in user-startup (first line is the best)

- Open Trident and load denebpiousb.device
- If exists, switch offline & delete any other denebxxxx.device
- Switch online denebpiousb.device
- Save
- Restart System
- Enjoy!

Now I have two A4K's (060 / Buster 11 / DENEB v11) testing PIO & DMA modes. Both modes works, but seems the PIO mode is more stable with larger HDD's and different devices (like USB sound adapters).

i had an isuuse with having to maually start posidon or the deneb would not work at all, with any jumper setting - i had to press reset. it did work fine for months at first. with an 030 A4000

after i fitted an A3640..

but after a fresh install os os3.1 and putting all the drivers back on for the deneb it worked prefectly - after months of pressing reset? odd but true.

Hi All,

Thanks very much for the advice but I tried this and still no joy getting it to auto-start. I put the PIO device offline and then put it back online and then saved the setting, still no luck.

I reflashed with Luciferin and made sure that the Z2 device is not in the flash memory, only the PIO device along with some other class files.

It's not really a big issue, I still think the Deneb is great, it would just be good to know why it won't auto-start.

I'm running OS3.9 on an A4000T with the inbuilt SCSI and Buster 11 so running in DMA mode is not an option.

Really?

I have been running a full A4000T setup with internal scsi and deneb in DMA for well over a year without issue.
Not sure why you didnt flash all deneb hardware classes, as it will only use what you online, so it doesnt hurt to have them in flash.
I have pio, dma and z2 in the flash. I then use trident to online the one I want, then flash the stack etc etc to flash for usb at boot.

If you use one real A4000T, sorry, I can't help you :( I have only towerised A4KD's.

Dou you test in different Z3 slots? and reflashing the frimware?

Poseidon not auto starting is a known issue with (at least) the 3640. Did you try adding the "nocache" module in the flashrom?

I read in the documentation that Deneb DMA and A4000T (with the factory installed internal SCSI module) can't both use DMA at the same time because the Buster 11 chip can only handle one DMA device (that being the internal SCSI modules). It also gives this example towards the end of the documentation and says that Deneb DMA will not work in this configuration.

I'll have a go at re-flashing the firmware but I am using a 3640 so this may be the cause of the problem. I haven't tried the "nocache" module yet but I'll do so tonight and let you know how it goes.
