hello All,
Im just wondering , while i get a 1541 , sd2iec and other bits sorted...
is it possible to make a C64 see via the serial cable a PC as a 1541 and load .d64 images?
just a thought.

Hi MJ - I think you can use the Silver Surfer to access PC's via Serial NULL modem cable but I've never tried it. Doubt you can load D64 games like that though but given that Silver Surfer uses Retro Replay, it might be possible...
Cheers

Hi john
i dont think its possible via serial but i know the 1541 can be written to / from via PC
An IDE64 can see a PC and browse files via a USB cable. I don't know of anything that will let you use a serial cable though. I remember something called a HDD64 which I think was also a C64 to PC solution.
An IDE64 isn't as compatible with multi-part D64 games but is stil pretty good nonetheless.
Cheers
Mark
You can build your own XE1541 cable and use a program like VC1541 to emulate the disk drive from your PC. I've never used this combination but it should work.
Good luck!
Heather
Here is our XE1541 cable if you dont want to solder one together:

hi heather,
very interesting ...a weekend project i suspect :-)
thank you all

All of the pc drive emulators have one HUGE drawback, they require a dedicated machine running dos, and then they are less compatibile than a sd2iec device. Also they only work on some parallel chipsets.
If you are a glutton for punishment, go ahead. I've been a tech for over 20 years full time, and it took me a couple of weeks trying tons of different motherboards / laptops, to find one that actually worked.
(I think it was a old p1 Toshiba laptop that finally did work.)

While I agree that getting the PC 1541 Emulators working is quite the pain in the bottom, his original question was asking about a serial cable he could build himself that could accomplish 1541 emulation until he received his sd2iec. Unfortunately, the DOS based emulators seem to be the only ones. Even the 64HDD requires a DOS. :(
If he just wants a solution that works, it's easier to wait until he gets his sd2iec but much more hacking fun can be had trying to get the PC 1541 Emulator working. :)
