What harddrive is this?

I found a box today that a friend gave me some time ago. One of the things I found in it was an old hard drive I don't recognize. What harddrive is this?

That my good sir is a Vintage MFM/XT *IDE* adapter and Drive - think of it as an 8bit IDE handler, I believe the max size the adapter could handle is 50MB, as to what the drive is I can work that out later when my brain comes back online.

Thanks Zetr0. Cool! This is interresting for me, I don't think I've ever seen a drive with XT-interface before. I've only read about them. I looked at the adapter earlier when taking the fotos, and was curious about which interfaces it adapts between. After I posted the thread, I realized I should've googled of course before posting :oops: so a started googling on info about the hard drive. It seems to be 44 MB. found som technical references, but have no more time today to check them out more in-depth.

Now I got curious about if this drive is possible to use with one of my Amiga 500 or 1000. Would be exciting to se if it's still alive :)

commodorejohn, I just realized, I don't know anything about Shugart drives. What properties makes it a Shugart one?

Well, rather it's a Shugart standard drive, not necessarily made by them. You can tell by the two ribbon cables. These were commonly used in old PCs (my 286 box has an ST-506 controller,) but most of the hard-disk adapters for the Amiga were SCSI instead.

Thanks for the clarification :) I'm gonna dig into this a bit more. Is it possible to hook it up with an Amiga 500 through the left side port?

If it's an old 8-bit XT-IDE drive, it could be used in an Amiga A590, as this supports the XT-IDE interface.

Ah, the good old days of manually entering the number of heads, tracks & cylinders into the bios to make the HD work. No such thing as auto-config back then. Unless ofcourse you had an Amiga :lol:

Oughta be; it certainly looks like that's what the controller's built for.
