just upgaded my amiga 1200 now my squiral cd rom or my pcmia adf adaptor wont reconise. the cd rom light works but nothing apears on workbench desktop.
also replaced my internal hard drive with a internal cf 4gb.
everything works fine except cd rom and adf adapter
any ideas
im really upset:help:

I hope you don't mind that I've moved your thread to a more suitable section, AmiOracle. This section is a far better place to get repair advice than our AmiRant section, although I can understand why you are upset.
In order to help, we need some information that may help our repair gurus.
1. How much memory is in the A1200? Has it been expanded? Some 8Mb memory expansions stop the PCMCIA port from working.
2. Can you confirm that the CF hard drive is seen as HD0: ?
3. How have you configured the CF Card in the PCMCIA adapter? What file system has it been formatted to?
Don't worry, with the amount of Retro Jedi power available on this site, we'll get you up and running again.
OK. Deep breaths. We all have 'brown-pants' moments when we plug stuff together and get no life. The thing to do is take a systematic approach to the problem.
Try un-doing the last change you made, see if the machine comes back to life. If it still doesn't, strip it down to the bare minimum and see if you can power on with that. Then slowly start adding things back until you've fully assembled the thing, or you've found the part that's causing the sticking.
Give us a detailed spec of all the bits you're trying to plug together. As Merlin says, there's so much retro-hackery experience muddled together here on Amibay that it's untrue. Any foible or weirdness of your configuration, someone here will have seen it before.
And if you suspect a component is faulty, hi-res photos of it can work wonders. Retro hardware has to be really dead before we give up hope with it here!

I put money on this, I bet its just a ram upgrade. If so you can do what I did with my old one and fit a switch to turn the upgrade from 8meg to 4meg via a jumper.Quote:

could it possibly be that if the OP has replaced the hard drive with a CF that there simply is no CD filesystem installed? Maybe they need to run the squirrel install floppy?
man this be so cool if its just the 8/4 meg prob as that meeans a realtively easy fix

we removed this and put the shield back on.
ian advised use with reshield as it was a mess an we tided the wires.
when it came the the hard no cradle and was loose.
bottom was cover with insulation tape so wouldnt short out tested all conections and made sure that they were on ok.
put insulation tape over the hole where the laptop drive was.
bought new Amiga internal floppy commodore floppy not escom!
its an original commodore Amiga 1200
picture will follow when i work out how.

one other question which way up does the cd rom pcmica go as i took it out and dont know which way it should go back in. the black interface seems to go both ways:help:

It depends on the brand of the expansion card in the trapdoor, but there are lots of them that have memory addresses that clash with the PCMCIA port, stopping it from working.
Carefully remove the card from the trapdoor and let's find out what make and model we are dealing with; a photo would be good if you can take one of the card.
It may have a jumper to allow you to reduce the memory to 4Mb and this will get the PCMCIA port back online.

It's a combination of the 8MB Zorro II RAM expansion & the fact that you are using Kickstart 3.1 now...
For some reason PCMCIA operation under Kick 3.0 was functional with many 8MB memory expansions.
KS 3.1 however put an end to that....
Merly's advice to switch the card to 4MB to prove this is a good idea..

This is what I did to mine to switch from 8 to 4 meg. If you have a jumper that is, just use a PC cable to fit on the jumper to a switch:

The trapdoor port of the A1200 is not a Zorro, but the technique used in most RAM expansion is.
The problem is the A1200 shares the same address region for both RAM (in the Zorro address space) and the PCMCIA. So adding more than 4Mb (on a plain memory expansion or really old 020/030 accelerators) will make the PCMCIA stopping to work. Setting the memory amount to 4Mb will cure the issue.
Newer (and better designed) 030 accelerators (and all other higher grade CPU cards) will not have this problem. I have both a Microbotics M1230XA & a Blizzard 1260 with 128Mb of FAST RAM with no problems.
And also an Apollo 1240 with 32Mb, but that one have its own problems not memory-related.

A C-USA machine is NOT an Amiga. They are just PC's in a retro looking case running Linux. Don't be fooled into thinking these machines are the rebirth of Amiga's, they are not. C-USA have just hi-jacked the brand name and IMHO, trying to pull a fast one.
Save your money and invest in true Amiga hardware, you won't go wrong. If you have doubts about particular bits of hardware then by all means ask here, somebody here will gladly steer you in the right direction.

Have you got a spare 4Mb simm to swap out for the 8Mb one? If our collective theories hold up, reducing the memory on the expansion by 4Mb should get the PCMCIA port working again.
I may have a 4Mb one knocking about at home, I'll check tonight.
Edit: Please try changing the jumper settings on the card to show 4Mb as below:-

Set MEM 2 to OFF (open) and the card should report 4Mb, with the PCMCIA port working. That's my hunch anyway.
If this works, you could fit a switch across the jumper, to select between 4 and 8Mb memory as you needed to.
them row of pins which seem to have a few missing is your clock port, and very hand it can be as well, usb springs to mind,
try changing them jumpers for 4Meg

leaveing the jumpers on MEM1,MEM0

If it's the only SCSI device, it shouldn't matter too much, as it will scan the SCSI bus for devices. A higher number means it may take longer to find the device, that's all.
I'd try it with the Viper settings changed and the ADF adapter first, then move on to the Squirrel.

So, do you have 6Mb total memory showing in Sysinfo now (the original 2Mb, plus the 4Mb from the expansion)?

ko, well im a duffer in all amigaistic stuff but im getting there! I've stopped trying to find the applications menu at top left (god cant you tell i use a mac and a pc with ubuntu!!!) and find the start button bottom left! ROFL :wooha: :thumbsup:

While i was getting sian the innards pic's of her A1200 i found that one of the PCMCIA guide rails (black thingies either side) was broken off and lurking near where it used to be, i think this may be contributing to the lack of pcmcia access too as when the cards (squirrel and CF car reader) are inserted they tend to feel like they are loose on the one side and arent connecting properly. A close up inspection of the pcmcia interface revealed nothing looking wrong (although i didn't venure below the motherboard due to been chicken! :whistle:
ok, now a stupid question (honest its stupid!) are there any secondary pcmcia adapter kits available so that a "backup" pcmcia slot could be added at the back where the (SCSI??) blank panel is (next to mouse port under floppy drive), failing that, some kind of parallel or serial port to pcmcia adapter (i know they exist the other way round!)

Sorry Geoff, once the PCMCIA slot is a goner then it's replace the entire board time as no replacement kits were available.
Still, in it's present form the slot should still be usable - just have to be a bit careful or insert card and then wedge something in on the broken side of the slot to give it some extra support.
Yeah just make sure you dont bend the PCMCIA pins now you have no guide. Because that is a right pain to get them straight again without snapping. Not that I have ever done it :oops:
I'd have thought it'd be possible to solder on a replacement PCMCIA port if you really wanted to. If the plastic bit's just gone, why not superglue it back together?
My A1200 has a snapped pin on the PCMCIA port. The thing still works with everything I've ever used it with though, so I'm plugging my fingers in my ears and going 'la la la' over the whole thing. :)

As you can tell, a lot of us have been around the block a few times when it comes to repairing retro computing items. We don't lose many patients when it comes to repairs.
Our AmiOracle and Photo Booth sections are most righteous and awesome and you should take some time to have a look around.
Blankstare's comment is both right and wrong at the same time - let me explain. Repair kits weren't and aren't available, but that does not mean that spares aren't out there......
Somewhere in my collection of spares ( I hate to call it a graveyard :lol:) I may have an old non-working A600 or A1200 board. If I can find it, I could maybe desolder the PCMCIA port from that machine and either send it to you, or you send the board here and I'll take a crack at replacing the port for you.

When you put it back together again, did you make sure that the green ribbon cable from the keyboard was plugged in and secured with the white plastic clip? it sounds like the ribbon has come unplugged.
You wouldn't really notice, as you have probably been using the mouse until now.
also that keyboard cable can wear out fairly quickly
