The German Fat Lady.. A2000 Project

It's going towards 3AM.. but unselfish as I am.. I share the pictures of a project I completed tonight :p

The Amiga 2000 was a total nightmare as I had so many parts missing and problems with leaking batteries that I was waiting for this one off lucky sucker punch.. and that was last week.. on eBay. Someone was selling an A2000 without comments on everything.. just a foggy picture from which I could tell it was worth the try and how lucky was that.. it had a mint motherboard with a NiMH in tact and even a SCSI II from GVP with an LPS drive (120MB) and.. an A2630 with MMU and 2MB of Fast RAM. The FlickerFixer I took out for someone else and I replace some of the plating, hood, frame work, Zorro Card sliders and cleaned the parts needing a proper clean.

Below are the pictures of the outcome. I would call it a job done although a DF1 unit (same revision FDD) would be on the list still of things to get for this one.

p.s. I did not document the restoration of some A500's, A600's and A1200's.. but did so for the A4000 as it involved some blood, sweat and tears to get a mint D-rev board and some crisp white bodywork. The other Amiga's were easy in comparison.. but maybe I will post them when I have some more time.

Sometimes the junk on ebay turns out the be the treasure. I've gotten some really good stuff cheap because it looked grubby or sounded like more trouble than it was worth.

How did you get the back plates and other metal surfaces so clean and clear?

Great job! Now get rid of that battery, pronto! ;)

No seriously.. I noticed that they were just full of muck and 20 odd years of grease so I just used some alloy cleaner and then wash them off and dry them thoroughly.

Here's a tip I found nowhere on any of the boards. The tablets you put in your dishwasher have an enzyme that kills any organic material and grease. Take a table, crumble it up and put it in a jar with some hot water and let it dissolve. It is the best to wash your car (* i kid you not!*) as it gives back the shine and clean the windows like noting else. I use that to clean keyboards and mice and the hard case parts as it is non acidic.

That was my first thought until I read several posts on Ni-MH batteries not being subject to this.. and some good collectors out there confirm this. Still being in somewhat of a disbelief I browsed the AmigaKit site for a replacement unit and saw they sold Ni-MH as well.

Still a bit unsure here :unsure:

Yes, they leak, too. Only they last much more than NiCd and the spillage is not that nasty.

Yeah, what rk said. NiMH can still leak and should be replaced afer 7-8 years or so. When Castellen did my A4000 board and replaced the battery with a NiMH one, he placed a sticker on the board saying "Replace battery by 2017" or words to that effect.

Still, if it's got a NiMH, someone's probably been in there before you and replaced it once already. I don't think C= ever shipped any A2000s with NiMHs as standard.
