Winuae "block zero failed write" with CF card

I have been trying to prepare the 2 gig CF card mentioned in another thread for use in my Amiga, using WinUAE 2.3.2 and HDinsttools. However, I am getting "block zero failed write" errors. I read this thread here http://eabmobile.abime.net/showthrea...373#post761373 and tried the solutions, using diskpart to clean etc. and am having no luck.

I thought I would put the card in my A1200 and then using the Install 3.0 disk HDtoolbox to prep and partition the drive, and then put it back into the PC to do the rest of the install. However, I can not find my Install 3.0 disk, and creating floppies to put HDinsttools or similar on the machine is not an easy option.

I am now thinking about leftfield approaches. I've got a 3.5 hard disk setup for Amiga somewhere, and I was thinking about trying to use something like HDclone to move that setup to the CF disk, but I am suspecting that the RDB will be totally wrong and it will just go crazy.

Does anybody have any ideas?

I was going to suggest prepping the card on the real Amiga, but without the Install Disk you'll find that an issue.

You could try to erase all partitions and volumes from the Disk with Diskpart or in Disk Management (Under Admin Tools/Computer Management)

First of all, I wouldn't use WinUAE 2.3.2.
It was changed in the way it handles CF cards recently that has had some effect.
(I'll see if I can find the post on EAB about that..)
Not at home, so I can't tell you which version to use, but it wasn't too far back...
Also, did you start it with the option: -disableharddrivesafetycheck

Just some thoughts..

Thanks for the feedback chaps. Yes, I was using the disable safety check tag, but I will try an earlier version of WinUAE and see what happens. Any idea how far I need to go back?

Not sure, but it was a fairly recent post, so I think not to far..
(I will check my version when I get home)
If I understand it, the disablesafetycheck is now ignored on 2.3.2..

I'm using 2.3.1 and have done a few cf cards fine

I must admit I had trouble prepping Skellionz CF card on my Win Vista Laptop which is running the latest WinUAE, I thought it was a Vista issue and prepped it on my WinXP rig, that's running an earlier version of WinUAE with the -harddrivesafetlycheck when I prep cards, nothing has ever given me an issue on that :cool:

I've tried it on an XP and a Vista machine so far, across a CF ide adapter plugged into an external bay and an internal connector. The earliest version of WinUAE I have tried is 2.0.something. I tried it on a Vista machine with a multicard reader that did not have WinUAE installed, and noticed it was still recognised as an EISA like device, so I may try installing Winuae on there tonight and see if I gt anywhere.

That should be PLENTY early enough... (Unless it's too early, not sure when they added that flag..)..
So it might be the card..
What brand? Some cards aren't as compatible...
