My New A4000T =D

Hi All!

I thought I'd start a project thread now I've had a little time to test out my new aquisition and get an RTG Workbench running.

There's still lots to do, but I'm ready to share progress with you all so far...

As I posted in the 'What did you buy' thread I collected my A4000T this morning, X-Ray (a user here and other boards) offered his collection for sale and since he is based in London I just had to have it!

The A4000T is in very good condition, a little yellowing and a small dent on one side but really it still looks very smart. And lucky for me its one of the highest spec'd out machines around.

It came with a CSPPC (64mhz 060 & 233mhz PPC) with 3x 128mb DKB 3128's giving a whopping 512mb Ram :ninja:

The Picasso IV has the Concierto and Paloma modules and I will be adding a Deneb USB shortly.

So here are some pics so far, of course once I put it back together I will post a pic of the A4000T with the front Bezel in place!

The CSPPC, of course its plumbed in now and running QuakeWOS smooth at 640x480 as I type! Even Quake II runs smooth in Software Rendering!

The Cyberstorm seems to be a lot faster than my 330mhz Blizzard PPC, I guess the A4000 is just a lot quicker than the A1200? Since this Cyberstorm is only 233mhz I found that a surprise, for example QuakeWOS in software rendering on the A1200 even via the Voodoo PCI is a lot slower then it's running right now on the CSPPC/PicassoIV :o

I've started by setting up Classic Workbench OS3.9 and Picasso96 + the WarpOS drivers, so far everything is working perfect:

All the Ram is showing up just fine and my WarpOS apps are working perfect :cool:

Next Job is to pull the Deneb from my Elbox Tower and plumb it in, then setup the Kickflash to eliminate the reboot. Oh and I still need to setup the Sound Card :whistle:

Since tomorrow is a bank holiday I should have some time to do that tomorrow!

I'm insanely jealous :) I love the idea of Amiga towers.

How many gfx slots are there? I plan to have an a4000t video toaster computer, but want a gfx card as well. I have a daughter card but I think the amiga towers have the mobo/daughter card on one large board, no?

Anyway, enjoy! That is one sexy beast. Are you gonna post some youtubes of it?

For sure there will be some YouTube Vids once I get AfA OS and some nice PNG Icons up and running, along with the Deneb of course.

As for Video Slots, I'm not sure I'll have to check :coffee:

You're right the A4000T has no seperate daughter board, the Zorro Slots are on the main board.

Nice to see you having fun with that Miggy. I did feel a few pangs of sadness watching it being loaded into your car, but it is for the best. I wasn't using it and I know you will.
Once that Deneb is in, you'll enjoy it more. I remember having reasonably fast boot up time with my Kickflash (which sadly died).
Oh, don't forget to check the SCSI dipswitches on the back, I am sure they aren't correct.

Well, normally I'd be here expressing my distaste and jealousy that NinjaSteve :ninja: had swiped yet another shiny and not given it to me. However, since the purchase of this shiny has led to me claiming a spare CSmkII, I'm not complaining!

Nah, seriously, that's one hell of a fine rig. And all those DKB 3128s! Who on Earth needed that much RAM in an Amiga? Have loads of fun with it, Steve. (I know you will!)

Thanks! I'll be sure to get the manuals out and have a look. Although it boots immediately with a CF on the IDE so I think it was IDE delay. I have an IDE terminator here if I need it. At the moment I'm running the CWB off the CF card but I'm going to prep up an UW SCSI HDD and move it there.

About your comments of BPPC & CSPPC, I found the same in my systems. The CSPPC 233 run much faster compared with my BPPC 233, why?...... I'm not a 'Master", but I think is the results of a completely different architecture in the mobo's design and chipsets.

I would guess the CSPPC runs faster because it uses a 604 PPC CPU vs the BPPCs 603?

Unfortunately unless I am mistaken, OS4 doesn't use RAM in the Zorro slots.

It does use it, but not as RAM, only for paging. ZIII RAM is slower than the CSPPC RAM by an order of magnitude anyway, also much slower than the SCSI.

Indeed OS4.1 Classic only uses ZIII Ram as Page Ram.

I'm going to try OS4.1 Classic once I've finished pimping OS3.9 :cool:

Have to say, Amiga towers have never appealed to me before, but seeing one in that kind of condition and spec is making me jealous :D

So using a swap on a SCSI disk connected to the CSPPC will give you higher mb/s then the zorro III Memmory?

@Kawazu

I think HammerD mentioned this on IRC, but it's pretty close between the two. The HD is much faster (over 20MB/s vs. something like 12MB/s), but the RAM cards may have lower latency.

On the other hand if it's the same hard drive you are loading something from and also using as swap, it may slow it down I guess, having to do two things at the same time... should probably just do some tests to see what works better in reality :)

As you can see up close the case needs some restoration, I'm worried about retr0bright in case it gets damaged but I'm pretty sure I'll re-paint the chassis :thumbsup:

The CVPPC is a nice piece of hardware, the best "real" Amiga graphics card you can get.

Don't forget to add some cooling to it though, as the Permedia2 gets hot hot hot... :cool:
I find it puzzling that they sold both the BVPPC and CVPPC without any form of heat sink/fan on the Permedia2...

Thanks to my good friend Marios I have CWB3.9 with CGX already setup for CVision for ease of testing, so I plumbed in my CyberVisionPPC ready for some action! (Don't worry I will be fitting a fan) :D

Would be good to apply some fan (or big heatsink) on Permedia 2 and 3,3V regulator. These two chips gets really hot.
